I have a lot of downtime at work and I guess in general. I don't mind a few ads here and there, but hate when ad breaks happen way too often. I also don't mind paying if it's legit fun.

What get?

Mini Metro. Definitely a good way to eat a little bit of time at the office. Not that I would know.

Free ones seem to be universally bad most of the time. They either get bogged down by ads or microtransactions, or both. Microtransactions in general lead to bad gameplay since the gameplay is built around selling you upgrades so the difficulty is inflated in ways to wall progression.

I know this is all well known but it stinks because I would think there would be more good free mobile games by now. Maybe they just get lost in the mix because of all the competition that can afford advertising.

The Room series are excellent puzzle games. You can get the whole series for about thirteen bucks.

Girls' Frontline

It has a fantastic story, surprisingly deep and strategic gameplay, and one of the most F2P-friendly mobile games out there. I got a solid year and a half of fun out of the game before I dropped it and moved to other games, but I've heard that it's continued to get even better since.

A game can be free-to-play but still good and fun. There are games like Azur Lane and (as I mentioned) Girls Frontline where the characters themselves are pretty easy to recruit (the paid stuff that whales spend their money on is mostly cosmetic stuff like alternate costumes) and the story/event content is never so difficult that you feel pressured to buy upgrades to be able to beat them instead of just grinding a little bit or thinking of a new strategy.

I had fun with the Kairosoft games back in 2013 when I had just moved and didn't have internet. They have like two main game styles - team management of some kind or business/town development and management - spread across several different themes (managing a cruise ship, managing a race car team, managing a soccer team, etc.).

The older titles require you to buy 'em, the newer ones are free but have mtx.

Paint It Back! is fun, it's a puzzle game.

Arknights
Azur Lane
Alchemy Stars
Guardian Tales
Girls Frontline
Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia

I would say Guardian Tales and Opera Omnia are the most F2P friendly.

Azur Lane and GFL are fun, plus they have the added bonus of their characters being based on real life things (WWII ships and firearms, respectively), and in Azur Lane's case, sometimes historical events are shown through character interactions. Like in the game Akagi doesn't like Enterprise because IRL in the Battle of Midway, dive bombers from the Enterprise damaged the Akagi beyond repair so she was scuttled.

Toon Blast

It can be mindless fun and also very strategic. Some luck is involved (you will get to know which levels require more luck) and overall it's a great experience.

It is more because the entire system is based around spoofing users and constant "updates" rather than actually putting out a solid game. The idea being that if you have a game that encourages rerolling (ie. gacha) you get a million "users" of your game as each counts as its own download. Hence why some games get absolutely nutty downloads while others are far more down to Earth when it comes to how many users they claim to have. This, in effect, means that you're constantly in the "top 100" lists for users/downloads which in turn gives you more users due to visibility. Similarly Apple and Google both "bump" games up to the top of lists if they receive an update, further giving games that have a ton of micro changes a leg up versus ones that are one and done. Gacha game has an event? To the top of the list. The event's over? Top of the list. Where a normal game might get an update/patch every once in a while phone games strive to constantly have a "new" thing to fight over who gets to be on the top of every list at all times.

Thus you basically only ever get the actually good games visible when they are on the paid tab as they don't really thrive on the gacha sense (and the few that try it tend to flop hard as people who pay for games aren't looking for a Skinner box as much as the freemium crowd) and don't really have any horse in the "bump wars" that the free games go with. It isn't that they don't exist, look at Dice Heroes as an example of a free phone game that is actually rock solid (on Android), it's just that they are extremely hidden under the deluge of drek that recognizes that selling a product has little to do with actually giving a quality experience so much as being the easiest thing for someone to gain access to.

I played Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes and ran across people spending tens of thousands of dollars. They weren't shy about admitting it. I was determined to be F2P but got addicted and probably spent a couple grand on that trash. Checked the discord and my same guild members are still playing years later. Probably broke and fiending for it 24/7.

I'll never play any mobile game again.
