Wages were already terrible to begin with, but now everything has just jumped in price like, 20%. Electricity is skyrocketing. Diesel is over $2 USD per litre.

Like imagine you're almost on the breadline already and then your bills go up 20%.

Incredible shortages of essential staff everywhere. Delivery drivers nowhere to be seen. You go into any cafe now and there's staff shortages everywhere.

Thanks Brexit! What a wonderful idea that was. It's nice seeing our country plummet into a soviet union hellscape.

Is it? I trust you as this isn't a UR topic but everything for me has been fine still... But then I earn comfortably and absorb costs without realising >_>

Has it really got that bad? I work remote now so don't drive and haven't noticed fuel prices. I've not had an energy bill yet. As for food/everything else I've not noticed a change.

If you're on a decent salary and you're in charge of your finances then things won't get exponentially worse for you any time soon. But for people who are already paycheck to paycheck, this is going to be an unmitigated disaster.

Fuel prices are astronomical right now. To be fair it's not totally because of Brexit but we also have so little bargaining power now, so I doubt the prices will go down again.

Fuel prices have started going to shit here.

In the US that is as well, same with stocking shortages and around a 20% increase in everything.

Not saying brexit was a good idea, but other factors may be at play here.

Not that this framing is inaccurate, but is that what's causing problems? I wouldn't imagine that all the immigrants would suddenly disappear from the country after Brexit happened. I thought it was more due to regulation changes and supply chain issues. Tbh I have read very little about what's going on there. What's the tldr?

Based on my knowledge of British politics, I assume somehow everyone will keep voting for Tories while Labour attacks anyone inside their own party who actually gives a fuck about the working class.

It's the classic problem where the right wing accepts no responsibility and the left wing assumes some responsibility, so ultimately the right wins out almost every time.

That whole time Jeremy Corbyn was being lampooned as a jew-hater for *checks notes* not dealing with the anti-semitism enquiry as effectively as he should, we had Boris Johnson showing genuine, unashamed contempt for jews, black people, women, immigrants and quite literally every kind of person who isn't a member of the white Oxbridge fraternity.

But ha ha, that's just locker room talk, or something

The UK had a lot of laborers who could easily get into the country and work because of the EU agreement. After Brexit they mostly went away creating a lack of employees to fill the jobs.

Of course the rights fake fantasy is always that theres an army of British people waiting to take these jobs, but there arent of course.

Hey, it may be fucking dire here, Brexit may be an unmitigated disaster, it may trigger the collapse of our economy, it may drive away the hardest workers, it may victimise the most vulnerable people in our society, but AT LEAST those responsible for it will get away unpunished.

Look at the bright side.

Yeah. I think there were a fair amount of Polish there but they werent considered immigrants since they went there when they were all part of the EU so you could work in any EU country.

I had a cousin that went there to work as a nurse since she was getting more money to work as one in the UK vs Poland.

It was just a little over 2/3 from what I recall. So a pretty pathetic turnout for such a big thing, and a massive change based on only a slim majority.

This isn't really true. I'm not even slightly patriotic but the UK has been a good place to live in the past.

Personally, I'm protected from the worst of the damage being done right now because I'm fortunate enough to be able to soak up the additional costs relatively comfortably, but there are a lot of people out there where it simply isn't isn't case.

People in unskilled work or early in their careers are getting shat on in the rental market. I currently work with several people who are new to the same profession I'm in and they're all having to live with their parents to get by. When I was at that same stage of my career nobody in that profession needed to do that.

Yeah but like at least you don't have as many Eastern Europeans clogging up the country /S

Thing is, even if you were to decide to hold a referendum and try to rejoin the EU, that's a process that will take years because the EU has no real reason to expedite it.

Best move for the Scots would be independence then joining the EU and leave the English to their own devices because iirc the Scots voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU.

its the mandates causing supply chain bottlenecks because of insufficient workers anywhere. And massive government spending causing rapid inflation.

but since it goes against the orthodoxy to say so, youll be hard pressed to get an ideologue to even consider these as an option.

itll get worse before it improves, particularly because those on the left with some power will double down rather than consider all possibilities.

ah yes, it's because of "the left". if we only had those rational, reasonable thinkers from "the right" in power, we wouldn't be in this mess. those right-wing folks are 100% self aware and always admit when they are at fault and then respond with an appropriate admittance of guilt followed by corrective action. silly leftists always ruining everything.

wait, it is "the left" in power in the UK right now, right?
