Love dune.

Love the books (well other then book 2/3). I was the first God Emperor of Dune on 3 Kingdoms back when it was impossible to get. I was slightly internet famous for it.

Can't wait!!

New movie. Hope it is good.

Yeah, I need to start smoking weed. Been anti-drug my whole life (Even perscriptions) but I have to take stuff for my diabetes and high blood pressure anyway so I might as well go all in.

I watched this last night, after coming home from watching The Last Duel in the theaters. I love Dune. The 1984 movie, the 2000 remake that was a 3 part miniseries and Children of Dune. This one was really good too.

I'm glad that they already greenlit part two. Too bad it'll be 2023 before we get to see it.

Did you go to one of those places like Movie Tavern where you can have "real" food delivered to your seat?

Nah, I watched it at home. It was ok, but I think I liked the last one better especially considering how far it went in 2 1/2 freaking hours.

Apparently the book is good, and Im no stranger to the 400 page novel, but isnt all of Dune ridiculously long and have a really bad ending due to the original author passing away.

Not exactly, it's complicated.

So the first book, Dune, is one of the best. That is what most of the movies have been based on (I do think they had one with his kids once, but don't think it reached God Emp of Dune).

Anyway the first book is basically a masterpiece, and back in the day (70's is when I read it), it was up there as one of the best science fiction books available. Frank Herbet, Isac Asimov, Heinlein etc were all prolific sci fi writers.

Unlike many of them though, Herbert, at least to me, only had really 1 great book, the original dune. The books immediately after it, Mesiah,Children,God Emperor, were blah (at least to me, and I think in general they were less popular to most people). He then kinda rebooted (moved into the future) and created a new main character that didn't suck, so the last 2 books he wrote (chapterhouse and Heritics) were quite good again.

Honestly if it was me, I'd just re-read (or read for the first time) Dune, Heritics and then Chapterhouse.

I have never read the newer books that were written by Herbert and Anderson. I plan on re-reading the whole series some day, but just have not gotten around to it, and then finishing it up with the new books. I have no clue how good they are.

The original book though, I have read multiple times in my life, starting as early as 6 years old, and probably the last time I read it was in my 30's (like 20 years ago now). It's quite worth the read.

They have not (again in my opinion) really adapted it well into a movie or mini-series. It SHOULD be a mini-series or TV show, not a movie. This last movie basically seemed to tell 1/3rd of the first book, in 2 1/2 hours, and seemed to drag alot of it out for no real purpose, while somehow actually leaving stuff out that was in the last movie.

While it wasn't bad, it also missed alot of what makes you interested in the characters I think. They didn't even have paul train against the machine with lights for instance, didn't have much interaction with the other main characters and Paul etc. Jessica also just seemed like a blah mom in this movie, without any realy power or force behind her (even if she did do a few things, she didn't seem to be nearly as in control as she was in the book, or even in the last movie).

Anyway, it seems a bit strange now actually, the sci-fi books of my youth, how they compare to current literature, and how they are re-imagined as movies etc. It was a different world then, and things that were amazing and very entertaining in the past, seem much more dull and done to death at this point. Part of it of course is just me being older/jaded etc, but the huge amount of entertainment we have all watched/been exposed to over the years and the fact that we have an unlimited amount of shows (often high quality) to watch, makes it hard to pick out something as exceptional anymore.

Am I like hallucinating or something?

Why are people trying to to hype up the 1984 movie? David Lynch himself thought it was garbage, and was furious when they took his 5 hour epic and diced it up into a 2.5 hour incoherent mess.

Did it have some good aspects? Sure, but unless you read the book or have seen the 2000 mini-series I think David Lynch's movie is notoriously hard to follow. I would love to see the full 5 hour version of Dune that David Lynch wanted, but unfortunately that will likely never happen.

I think I did see an extended version of that movie actually, but it's been awhile.

Anyway, I have read the book, so it wasn't hard to follow. I liked the actors they used better in most cases and they had more emotions etc.

I didn't think it was great, just better than this new one. I hated the Harkonians in that movie for instance.

Nice, it's done well enough for the second part to be confirmed. That makes me happy. Wish they could've taken the risk to film both parts simultaneously though.
