While the principle in *theory* isn't bad, any conservative-welcoming social media platform will be attacked by the government and far-left extremist groups. For instance, simply creating a Parler profile -- without taking into account any behavior on the platform itself -- has been enough to get people fired and blacklisted. Governments have been looking for any pretext, no matter how flimsy, to control or shut down social media platforms, or to subvert their use for the government's agenda.

As nice as it is to imagine that the internet is still some free space, that hasn't been the truth in a while.

tbh, the US has definitely skewed towards totalitarianism lately, although I suppose it was to be expected from electing the VP of the guy who defended the government spying on all Americans' emails and who locked up more whistleblowers than any other president (and iirc may have locked up more whistleblowers than all other presidents combined), including at least one the administration wound up torturing

Actually they haven't been leaning toward totalitarianism at all and locking up any republicans (like @Zeus apparently) is a wonderful thing. Republicans have already shown they don't want to respect rule of law.

There is, but regular Twitter's and Facebook's algorithms already tend to promote right-wing perspectives preferentially. Right-wing extremists will sometimes get booted off, sure, and then wave their giant victim complex around as they run sobbing to Parler or whatever, but by and large, the whole "social media discriminates against right-wing views!" thing is the exact opposite of the truth. The only right-wing views they discriminate against are thinly-veiled calls to murder all the gays

We also have seen them take a stance against misinformation before they banned Trump they were posting links below all his tweets going against every damn thing he tried to tell people that was a blatant lie.

I also don't think they necessarily promote that shit, the problem is the algorithms feed you more of it so if you see something that makes fun of Hillary and calls her a crook if you like that post, it's more likely to show you more stuff like that. So the right wing get more right wing and a similar case of the left, assuming they get their info from sites like Facebook.

I mean Zeus is so consistent with his bull shit you kinda have to believe he believes what he says, but it's so fucking insane that it's hard to believe anyone could believe that even when you know about 1/4 - 1/3 of the nation believe it.

So first thing "conservative welcoming" is fucking disingenuous. Those websites are for hate and promotion of violence. You don't get banned from normal social media for being conservative. Like the don sub reddit got taken down because they were promoting the killing of police while banning anyone that tried to talk common sense.

People don't get in trouble for saying "I don't like taxes" or "I take issue with this particular regulation" You know it but all you do is promote disgusting garbage Zeus.

Typical social media: "Don't be violent or an asshole. Maybe don't spread blatant misinformation. Thanks."

Alt-right social media: "Don't disagree with us, ever. You will be banned, and then shamed behind your back when we aren't discussing how to be violent towards other things we don't like."

So the right wing get more right wing and a similar case of the left, assuming they get their info from sites like Facebook.

It goes beyond that. It's not just a matter of showing more of the things you actively Like, it's a matter of disproportinately showing people (all people) right-wing stuff because the arguments and controversies that ensue drive more traffic. Facebook records much more than just what you click "Like" on. They record how long you spend with a given post on the screen, whether or not you read comments on it, what sort of comment threads you expand. When they do show left-wing stuff, the dissenting comments are displayed as "more relevant" because that's what people that agree with the initial content are going to spend more time reading and responding to.

Everything about how Facebook and Twitter are designed focuses on one goal: To increase your activity on the site, which in turn increases the amount of time you spend looking at ads, the chance of engaging additional people, and creates additional opportunities for them to gather and sell data about you. The accidental end result of the algorithms that pursue that goal is that all users are being disproportionately shown right-leaning content, regardless of how they personally lean.

Hell, probably 90% of the times I see conservatives complaining about being censored by big tech, it's on a Facebook post or tweet, which is all kinds of hilarious.

Show me where signing up for a Facebook or Twitter account is grounds for being fired from a company. More importantly, Facebook and Twitter are allowed to exist, whereas the government and extremist groups pressure companies to deny access to those conservative social media channels.

And the fact that far-left authoritarian politicians are trying to pressure social media platforms to suppress conservative opinions is a separate, but still salient discussion which ties into the larger trend.

Twitter and Facebook's algorithms target things that get the highest interactions. Blame the userbase, not the algorithm. And Twitter, FB, etc, *very* strongly discriminate against right-wing views, which you can clearly see by how their councils are stacked.

Which also comes back to the unequal treatment. Factually-questionable conservative remarks received "fact checks" whereas outright-inaccurate liberal stances did not.
