I intentionally left out 64 because it was obviously the most essential.

In the end I gotta give it to Brawl. Other than 64, it had the highest ratio of "essential" characters and the least amount of fluff. Even though most of us were disappointed with that cast when it was first confirmed because it was smaller than most people were expecting, at the end of the day that entire roster, between newcomers and veterans, turned out to be the most no-nonsense.

Smash 4 easily for me, between Mega Man, Duck Hunt, and a batch of characters that I otherwise still just find to be really fun and fresh.

I think every batch of characters is roughly equally as good, to be honest.

I suppose Smash 4 with Duck Hunt and Greninja.

I'd go with Ultimate just because of Ridley, but there's waaaaaay too many misses on the rest of Ultimate's cast for me.

Brawl had Snake, and he's probably the character I've played the most out of all of those (as well as being my favorite character in general of anyone in Smash). I think it has the least fluff of the four, too, although Smash 4 probably has the best selection at the top end between Cloud, Ryu, and Mega Man.

I really like Bowser Jr for 4 as well. The problem is that I was really hoping he'd be outside his clown car. I get that it makes for a really unique fighter and playstyle, but it's just not my thing.

I am sort of curious about the people voting Melee - to me it's the weakest batch of the four. Yeah, I get that Bowser/Peach/Zelda/Ganondorf were sort of obvious necessary additions to the game, and I happen to be a huge Falco stan personally, but isn't it kind of a lacking batch outside of a couple of inspired picks like Mewtwo and G&W? I'm curious which chars out of this batch are the ones that people really prefer over the seemingly more star-studded lineups of the later three games (when, to be fair, they had a lot more time to develop new fighters)

Maaaybe 4? Its so hard to pick because Melee and Brawl had really essential Nintendo characters, and the latter two had the wild unexpected picks. Mega Man and Pac-Man were such great additions, and then they let me play as fucking Ludwig Von Koopa? I never would have guessed that was even a possibility!

Like of course if you made me choose who to put in Smash Bros. Im choosing Bowser over K. Rool, but K. Rool getting added was so exciting because I thought it wouldnt happen... and also its not really a fair comparison because Melee didnt have the same crazy hype cycle of character reveals that the later games did.

so yeah I dunno. 4 maybe, but also 4 probably has the characters I would put at the top of the list to cut when they inevitably downsize the roster in the next game.

Shulk is my favorite character in the game and I still thought Smash 4 was iffy. Brawl is when the game's roster started to feel complete.

Almost voted Melee, has a lot of strong characters and some good niche picks like G&W, Ice Climbers, and Marth/Roy before there were a million fire emblem swordfighters. Ultimate brought in a bunch of characters I've wanted for a long time though so I went with that

Almost voted Melee, then Brawl, then I went with Ultimate. It's just had so many additions I've been wanting since all the way back to the Melee days. But man Sonic and Snake being the first ever third party characters was so nuts when it happened.

Smash 4. Gotta respect my best main in the series, and there's other great stuff there. I will say that Brawl has some good ambitious characters that unfortunately couldn't be shown off too well in that setting, but 4 is where you started seeing characters with a lot more complexity and things to set them apart. AKA exactly what I want to see in fighting games.

Sora makes things a little bit closer, but it still pretty easily goes to Brawl

I can't imagine modern Smash without Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Sonic. Snake was an unexpected gem, and characters like Wario and Charizard were a long time coming.

Between Mega Man, Little Mac, Robin, Shulk, Ryu, Cloud, and Bayo, it's Smash 4. Good set of newcomers from each game though.

Brawl by a mile. Personal favorites like Charizard, King Dedede, and Meta Knight combined with the crazy reveals of Sonic and Snake make it the best group for me.
