https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2021/09/30/big-brother-first-black-winner/

If youre not a regular Big Brother viewer, it might have been hard to appreciate the emotional scene at the end of the Sept. 9 episode: After starting out the season with 16 contestants, the reality competition series was finally down to just six people and all six were members of the Cookout, the secret all-Black alliance that was formed in the first week. That meant, for the first time ever, a Black contestant was guaranteed to win Big Brother, the long-running CBS show (known as a social experiment) in which 16 people are locked in a house andcompete in physical and mental challenges, all while voting one another out, one by one. For a show that has consistently made headlines for majority-White casts with some contestants who behaved in racist ways and continually sidelined people of color, this was a very significant moment in the shows two-decade history. After the Top 6 list was official, contestant Xavier Prather broke down crying. We did it, he said, as he hugged Kyland Young. We did it. The camera panned to show all of the Cookout other members included Tiffany Mitchell, Hannah Chaddha, Azah Awasum and Derek Frazier clapping and laughing and celebrating, with several on the verge of tears. On Wednesday nights finale, Xavier, a 27-year-old attorney from Milwaukee, was crowned the winner of Big Brother Season 23 and the recipient of the $750,000 grand prize by a unanimous vote from a nine-member jury of evicted players. The Cookout was introduced to the TV audience in the July 14 episode, in a conversation among several of the members. Everything is not about the game, Tiffany said. The game brought us here. Tiffany created a strategy that involved each of the Cookout members pairing up with another person in the house as an informal duo. That way, the Cookout would not only have more allies to help them in the game, but the duos would look like bigger targets and take the pressure off the Cookout. It worked flawlessly but meant that the Cookout members bonded closely with another person only to turn on them and send them home when it was time for the weekly eviction. Tiffany in particular was close friends with another cast member, Claire Rehfuss, who trusted her so implicitly that Tiffany felt compelled to explain to her why she had to vote her out. Claire was hurt, but understood. It really, really sucks because I cant be that mad at her, Claire sobbed to the camera in the diary room. Because I know that Tiff doesnt want to see part of this long tradition thats happened in Big Brother, where people of color and people who are Black go out, and theyre put against each other and theyre sent out. I know so many people wont get it. But I get it. And thats why I cant fight her on this.

Scenes like this also led to calls of reverse racism on social media, as some fans complained that targeting non-Black contestants were unfair never mind the years when all-White alliances sent people of color home near the beginning of the game, or the level of masterminding it took for a six-person alliance to successfully fly under the radar. People have forgotten what the term racism is, so they tend to just throw it out there as a label when something is uncomfortable to them, Jun Song, the Season 4 winner of Big Brother, told Entertainment Weekly in a piece that addressed the criticism. This was never about Black versus White. It was more about this kind of beautiful solidarity between six people who came together. Maybe they didnt even realize at first that it was for a cause, but now it has become a cause.

That was great how The Cookout was able to label the white people as threats and get them out one after another and slip under the radar. They were some horrible players too with Frenchie was the fake progressive who started an all girls alliance as a dude and Brent was inappropriately touching women.

tiffany won america's favorite player and no matter how much he is getting called out on it derek F seems to think his blatant misogyny doesnt count cause he is gay O_o

tiffany did most of the work for the cookout so she deserved the recognition
it was her winning strategy that made the cookout so successful

pretty much every season
there is a reason it took 22 years for a black person to win big brother
typically a large power alliance is formed of hot pretty white people and the non pretty and non white players get taken out first

They are often the first or second people to go. BB14 was probably one people felt the person got robbed. They did a competition on the first day and the leader of the losing team got to pick who to send home and it was a black woman. So she didnt even get to establish herself it was just off her looks and how she did in that competition.

I have never watched Big Brother and even I know that it typically ends up being the Pretty White People Show

It's is kind of shitty that they had to resort to such underhanded tactics to win, but then that's pretty much every "reality" game show in a nutshell.

All the time both blatant and indirectly. It happens way more indirectly where the major alliance of the season is a group of white people. Given that the POC arent in the majority alliance their days are numbered and it is tough to overcome that advantage in Big Brother with the structure of the game. Survivor gives the minority alliance way more tools to beat the majority like hidden immunity idols. With Big Brother if you on the block after veto you are fucked if you the target.

the closest we ever had to a black winner before was all the way back in season 3 when danielle outplayed everyone and made it to the final 2
but the jury wasnt sequestered back then and were able to watch the show and all her diary room entries were her hilariously badmouthing the other players

this cost her the game

No. There has never before been an alliance created solely on the basis of race. There have been plenty of white-only alliances, but it was never formed under the basis of race but more-so because those people meshed together personality wise or were in positions to use each other to get further. BB16(?) did have actual instances of people being openly racist but its not the norm by any means and the season is shunned for a reason.

This season was also the first time they've had more than 3 (out of 16) contestants being African American. They played it well tho and had the perfect storm of having contestants that were all non-confrontational and oblivious, by all means they deserved to win the season.

This is stretching it, before this season it was normally 1 person of color. Then on top of that they were typically shoving Jesus down everyone's throats.

The cookout blatantly targeted white people and said no one can target or suggest they are alliance in fear of having their lives ruined.

It took 23 seasons because the cast has typically been majority of white people. This was the first diverse season. I hope this continues but there needs to be more representation of asians, indians, native americans, arabs etc.

I mean, even in Survivor. The first second diversity is equalized, you get your first Asian and Black guy winners.

Minorities have trouble winning these shows because theres never enough of them on.

yeah survivor has had a bunch of non white winners though. But survivor is a different game entirely in that respect.

i just want to see more representation of other minorities in big brother. DX and Tiff were the stars of this season imo.

It was a guy named Dan who made the choice. But yes it would have been the case with whoever but it was a black person being the first out yet again on a reality show.

In another article I saw mentioned on the Bachelor series POC rarely make it past the fifth week on that show as well.

edit: Found the article: https://theweek.com/culture/1005429/big-brothers-historic-black-victory-shows-the-future-of-reality-tv

On programs like Survivor, The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, and Big Brother, which all run on elimination votes, the token person(s) of color is regularly among the first to go home. Between 2002 and 2016, for example, not one African-American competitor on The Bachelor or Bachelorette lasted past the fifth week. Nearly 60 percent were cut in the first two weeks.

is completely convinced he was the secret mastermind of the game
and was shocked he didnt win americas favorite player

him and kyland were just the worst this season
especially when kyland compared hannahs game to big Ds when hannah when hannah did more to protect the cookout than kyland had all season

I was in a user-hosted big brother game on another board years ago and I came up with the same sort of idea as the cookout (each of us having a side ally who could essentially be a shield). The cookout was more organized and covered their bases better and were ultimately more successful (my alliance of 4 all made final 5 but not final 4).

Certain types of people are going to bitch about race here but the bottom line is that no other alliance of that size has ever been that dominant and successful.

(*Spoiler warning for winner* if anyone who hasn't watched it actually cares)

Tiffany and Xavier were definitely the best in the alliance and really the only thing I can fault Xavier for was not being honest with Kyland when it wqs a done deal. He kept Big D as the sole voter so clearly he trusted him to evict Kyland, so he should have come clean at that point. Insisting on it being a blindside is bad gameplay and in other situations, that could cost votes in the end. I sort of half-expected a spite vote from Kyland to make the end result not unanimous.

That was season 15. The n word was used multiple times, the homophobic f slur was used too. Several contestants openly mocked a black woman and an Asian woman. One contestant claimed another was a pedophile and, doing an impersonation of him, said "I have children locked in my basement." This prompted an actual police investigation into him (the one making the claim, not the one he was accusing) where they actually searched his house (didn't find anything). More than half the cast was involved in blatant racism, homophobia and/or sexism at one point or another. The arguably guiltiest one, Aaryn, earned the nickname "Aryan" for her behavior. She and at least 2 others lost their jobs as a result of what they did on the show (one was a realtor or something and lost her license as well). Yeah... that was a pretty fucked up season.

Unfortunately one of them (I believe Aaryn) is a very successful makeup YouTuber now, so she kinda got off Scot free.

I'm sure that there are a bunch of basement dwellers that are eager to point out how if a white group got together to specifically target the black players in a season it wouldn't be celebrated at all and they'd be shit all over. It's kinda sad.

I mean it wasn't even really a matter of targetting the white players. It was a matter of targetting the people who made sense to target. Travis was targetted by Frenchie, Frenchie was a trainwreck, EVERYONE wanted Brent gone, Whitney had no allies and was just convenient to get rid of (plus that was on Christian's hoh), Christian was targeted by DX (and that was actually against Xavier's wishes), Britini was a convenient target and a threat (Big D and Azah didn't even want her gone), DX... not white, SB... threat, and that just left Claire and Alyssa. So "they targetted all the white people first!!" isn't even really true, so that argument doesn't hold weight anyway.
