Yeah it was discussed in the Nintendo Direct topic
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/79673404

Anyway I repeat what I said there - it's a animated movie. The casting is for voice acting, not playing a role in a live-action film. They can alter their voice to fit the character, they (probably) won't use their "regular" voice
So I really don't see what is all the uproar about this. Wait for the first time we hear them talk and then judge

Maybe Jack Black and Michael Keegan Key can alter their voices and show some talent, but none of the rest of them have shown that ability. Chris Pratt especially. I've liked the guy in a lot of things, but he has zero range. He's been in the Lego Movies as well, so we've seen what he can do with voice acting and he literally could only play Chris Pratt in them just like everything else. Since when did a one note character actor get so many leading roles?

Probably a combination of a good agent and being one of Hollywood's "it" factors currently, sure he was more of that back in like 2016-ish or so but still holds on today

He'll still be that as long as they keep making Guardians and Jurassic World movies

Illumination sucks. One look at what they did to the Seuss properties should let you know that this movie is gonna be painful for actual Nintendo fans. It'll make a billion dollars though so... I guess it's a win, as long as this doesn't lead to Nintendo outsourcing its actual games to western devs.

I don't see the reason why they didn't just let Charles Martinet voice the character(s) he's been voicing for nearly 30 years, but I guess that's why I'm not in Hollywood. People recognize Mario's voice by now, and though I actually can picture most of the cast in their roles doing well, it's an unnecessary move when the guy was right there.

Charles Martinet is the loveliest guy but if the script demands multiple lines for him then it's a different job

Also movies (unlike videogames) use actors to draw. Martinet isn't a draw, Pratt is more likely to be

Same as people demanding Nathan Fillion play Nathan Drake in a movie. It was simply never going to happen, as much as Mal and Drake had similarities and it would have been great. Fillion is a TV actor and cannot sell a movie on the level of investment Sony were putting into a UC movie. It probably wouldn't get funded.

I mean, Nintendo already own a couple of western studios who are responsible for some of their best games.

Why not switch Rogen and Black's roles? I'm never heard Black speak in a low enough voice (or garbled) to fit that character. I can buy him as a doofy Donkey Kong a little easier.

Probably gonna do some weird effects work overdubbing it or something.

And Pratt is a swing and a miss...

He's still around. He was in John Wick and still does stand up.

But seriously. Mario is either gravely Italian/New Yorker or the Martinet pitch. Danny Devito maybe? I mean, way too obvious...but Chris Pratt? I'd rather have Devito doing schtick.

Well, if Mario will sound like Lego Movie's Emmet, then yes, I agree it's not a good fit

But again - we need to wait and see (hear) it first before we can judge

Mario seems like a weird choice of Nintendo franchise to adapt into a film, partly because the plot is usually so basic. When Super Mario Galaxy tried to have a more ambitious plot, someone at Nintendo (Iwata I think, but please correct me if I'm wrong) flipped out and demanded it be removed, so the developers put Rosalina's backstory in a secret room instead.

The second reason this seems weird to me is that the tone of most Nintendo games, especially Mario, doesn't lend itself to the snarky humour that you tend to get in Hollywood movies. Nintendo's games are usually more earnest and sincere than that. Kid Icarus Uprising is the only one I can think of that would fit that tone while remaining true to the spirit of the game.

Finally, who will be the Minions stand-in? My money's on the Goombas.

My feeling about it is that the series has had 20ish years to give Mario a proper voice and they have essentially settled on him being a borderline silent character. Other characters actually have dialogue in various games, but I can't remember if Mario himself ever says more than a few catchphrases (maybe in an RPG I haven't yet played). As such, I can't imagine Mario delivering normal lines at all, and it will be awkward to see. If they put in the effort, they could have captured his silent spirit while letting the supporting cast deliver the inevitable humor - but considering the studio, I doubt any meaningful effort is involved.

They had dialogue in the Super Show cartoon, so I'm not worried about that aspect of it.

And they've done stories that aren't just Mario saving Peach from Bowser, but at the same time, I wouldn't necessarily expect that here.

Maybe they'll go the Sonic route and have a "modern Mario" that is a fleshed out character who speaks and a "classic Mario" who....is Mario.
