In public situations i have to catch myself and make sure I'm not staring into a person's clothes or over their shoulder because I do that without thinking.

You're overthinking. Nobody gives a fuck about you in public. Nobody is paying attention to what you're looking at.

I don't do it a whole lot because.. well I don't really know why. I'm not scared to do it, because I do do it, but mostly when I'm talking about something that matters

I didnt have much of a choice growing up both in the I had parents sense and a social sense since back in those days youd get bullied pretty severe if you didnt fit the bill or youd get taken advantage of for being labeled as x for not being normal

Nowadays I dont put that on someone, if I notice someone doesnt really want to make eye contact when talking Ill put my eyes and focus on something else while continuing to talk so they can feel free to bring their head up

at some point Ill try and meet their gaze just so they know Im still there

That can help, or you can look directly into one eye if they got one thats looking somewhere else and cant help but do that.

Once you get used to it, it becomes a matter of staring someone down to their very soul sometimes. You can see certain things in someone that way

Practice practice practice. I used to hate eye contact and felt weird about it, but after forcing myself to do it frequently when talking to people it just became easier. Now I just do it without thinking about it.

You should intentionally take breaks from making eye contact by looking at different things while you talk. You can also let someone know you want to be taken more seriously by looking directly at them, and if you're not always looking at them this helps.

People on the spectrum generally struggle with looking directly into a person's eyes because it almost feels like they're staring into your soul.
