99.99% of things that get claimed as cultural appropriation are not. Further more its usually young white far left people whining on behalf of another group while that other group doesn't actually care or in many cases likes it, for example Mario wearing a poncho and sombrero in Super Mario Odyssey.

Toxic appropriation is when a marginalized group faces discrimination or harassment for a certain practice while said practice is then adopted and/or commodified by the oppressor. A lot of it is rooted in racism and yes, is bad.

However, you can engage with a culture and its people without disrespecting it. Hell, you can even modify or meld it with your own culture so long as you respect its roots.

Right wing reactionary types see the phrase "cultural appropriation" and think it means "Lefties don't want me to eat Chinese food anymore!" or some stupid shit like that.

People who complain about this the most don't understand the issue that people have.

It is when one comunity do something and it is a treated as uncivil or horrible; but when a white person does it they get major props and treated like it is something great.

Example Marky Mark and Vanilla Ice .

Do some people get it wrong and complain about stuff like white people were locks. Yes.. but they are not the norm.

Alt Right Joe Rogan Rants About Cultural Appropriation "It's stupid!"

Joe Rogan isn't alt-right. Dude believes in tons of left leaning policies including gay rights, and universal healthcare. He just thinks for himself and doesn't abide by any "group think" bubble-like ideology. Some of the shit he supports can be defined as far left, others far right, and others everything ranging from communist to anarchy.

He's all over the place because he doesn't vote or give a fuck about party lines. He just wants to get high and talk bullshit.

The far left likes to label him alt-right because he lets anyone and everyone come on his show. He'll give anyone a platform from a Antifa General to a KKK Leader. He lets everyone share their piece... typically the most controversial just self implode on themselves. I mean Alex Jones came off looking like a legitimate crazy person who needs to be committed.

There is an argument to be made that not everyone deserves a platform to spew their nonsense... but it's hard to deny that it's not entertaining, and controversy creates cash.

I think where a lot of the anti-SJW rhetoric stems from a fundamental misunderstanding (or perhaps for some a deliberate misrepresentation) of the most basic principles of intersectional critique and analysis.

You can always spot this misunderstanding because the person making the argument almost always centers it around the claim that something has been found objectionable by SJWs due to it being offensive, and that because what is offensive is completely subjective from person to person, it is therefore hypocritical for anyone to object to something based on its offensiveness. This is a common argument put forward by self-described moderates, libertarians, free speech advocates, and vaguely right-wing comedians. Its also completely missing the point.

The SJW crowd does not object to anything because it is offensive. There are plenty of things that they enjoy specifically because they are offensive. They dont care about what is offensive or what isnt. Their objection lies not in the offensiveness of the object of critique, but rather how that object (be it media representation, cultural appropriation, casual racism/sexism/whatever) contributes to the harm of groups of people who are marginalized. The objection to using homophobic slurs isnt because they are offensive - its because the attitudes they engender and foster are actually harmful to gay people.

Now you might disagree that telling rape jokes is actually harmful to victims of rape - and youre more than welcome to make that argument. But trying to reframe the argument as being about what is a matter of subjective opinion (i.e. its offensiveness) is not a valid critique, and is missing the point to such a degree as to inspire some suspicion as to whether or not its being done intentionally.

Eh, Cultural Appropriation is real but it irks me when people try to act like it's not. It's not just as simple as white people wearing braids.

An example to me would be Black cowboys in America. There was a huge culture of African American Cowboys who went west after being freed. White Hollywood essentially whitewashed the cowboy image and you have John Wayne like cowboys with no mention of the history with Black and Mexican cowboys and vaqueros. Essentially erasing a culture. I think the number is like 1 in 4 cowboys were black.

I mean, that sounds like an argument against cultural appropriation to me. Alot of what woke twitter determines cultural appropriation is based on racist stereotypes. Liked white people doing martial arts - despite martial arts being universal. I mean out of the 80 or so UFC champs only one has ever come from east Asian heritage. Then of course black people and dreadlocks despite them historically originating from Greece.

So if you were to depict a bunch of black cowboys Twitter would just cry "internalized racism" or whatever the fuck. Of course there are black cowboys...there are black country singers too.

The whole concept that you can't do something based on race is stupid as fuck.

This, cultural appropriation is an exclusionary tactic most of the time. Dreadlocks isn't even a black thing, it's origin today is a religious thing. Most black people with dreads today aren't Rastafarians; there are white Rastafarians as well

@STEROLIZER

I agree with the majority of what you said, but I draw the line at you saying Rogan has invited an antifa general or a KKK leader. Rogan also frequently has morons on his show like Alex Jones are largely leaves them unchallenged while grilling Adam Conover (who is his own brand of stupid) for feeling trans females should compete in sports with cis females.

I do feel Rogan is often treated unfairly and almost exclusively by left leaning people who use stupid purity tests to label anyone with a mild disagreement as alt right, but........

He still does and says enough stupid crap all on his own and there is a definite bias in the types of guests he has and the way he approaches those interviews that he doesn't get to play the enlightened centrist card exactly.

It has been said many times, but the best comparison is that Rogan is Oprah for men. Oprah peddled a lot of snake oil salesman and is largely responsible for the careers of Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, and many others. She also had had literal KKK members on her show and very notable anti vaxxers. The Oprah-Rogan comparison is a pretty accurate one.

Thats now how the world works. Rewind time and rethink how things would be if cultures had exclusive rights to things

Sharing and appreciating other cultures is great. I was raised being told my home is a melting pot of many different people from all walks of life, as did many others.

You will jump down a persons throat for appropriating a culture when you dont even know that person. You see a person that doesnt look like the culture you think it comes from and get mad, not giving a single thought to who they are, where they are from or who raised them.

Its people like that who hold society back and prevent progress
