Yeah, this makes it considerably less of a specific concern. They're not ramping up the data collection, they're just implementing a filter on the data they're already collecting. The fact that they can do this without ramping up data collection is a privacy concern, but not this specific filter.

Clearly they don't well enough to stop cp

Anyways I wonder how they would go about that, would it look at where you got any questionable pics from or would it just scan the pics potentially allowing cp of teens that look 18 through while popping people for having pics of young looking 18/19 year olds. Possibly some other method, I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to computer algorithms

pornography is sexual

the fact that the phone is flagging it for other people to look at it on the internet

They're looking at whatever their filters catch. This is just one of many filters, one which they're advertising because it makes people feel better about the data that's being collected. Others are less PR-friendly, so they don't get advertised.

yeah this is a gross business practice

you could jus flag the user as underaged and ban any photo that looks like a naked body
but this seems like it takes a lot of second hand guessin for it to work

this is basically transmitting child pornography after it's been made
which is why the law was written in the first place

you guys are saying people cant take pictures of themselves in a mirror in the phone without the cops being called

Generally because they're in sexual relationships and want to share those pictures with their partners. Minors being in sexual relationships is nothing particularly new, nor is it inherently a bad thing.

ith the system performing scans on the device before images are backed up to iCloud. If the program is convinced it's identified abusive imagery, it can share those photos with representatives from Apple, who'll act from there.

people should take responsibility for themselves
you're saying these people can scan your kids phone and notify the police if they take a picture of themselves

So how do they tell the difference between, say, a mother who took a photo of their kid swimming naked because it's a cherished memory (somehow), a child who took a nude selfie (for some dumb reason. they're kids), and actual child porn? Plus what about all the times they'll, say, call the police because someone took a pic of something that vaguely resembled that and their AI mis-identified it?

Even if you're heavily in favor of this I just don't feel AI's are advanced enough to be even remotely viable... And I am MASSIVELY against this!

Are people really defending companies taking their data now?

But this is especially funny when Apple promoted the "privacy" of their platform.

With that said, hopefully this will help catch pedos and prevent child abuse, but I have my doubts. Do other platforms have anything similar that targets child abuse? Because if not, wouldn't this news just cause pedos to switch to other platforms?

I would think all flagged content is sent to the proper authorities. Whom review and establish context through investigation of other gathered data. Sally Whatsherface age 15 might take a topless pic and it gets flagged. Location data from the phone will tell you it was taken within 5 miles of her home, Carrier provided data will tell the phone is either under her name or her parents, facial recognition will confirm identity. Then they can track whoever she sends it to, if it's Billy Boyfriend age 16...or if it's Loli Lover age 46, who also just happens to have 30GB illegal content on his phone.

AI isn't sorting this into two separate boxes, it's ranking by severity, so resources can investigate phones/cases most likely to be associated with large distribution. Considering it's a government run operation, I'm sure it's not really optimized at all, and it's being used for other purposes as well.

Kinda sounds like an easy way get people onboard with additional massive data intrusions and revealing more about how they abuse customers because, after all, pedophiles are just about the one thing everybody can be against (well... almost everybody, since British police turned a blind eye to under-aged sex trafficking because they didn't want to look racist... and, come to think of it, that's happened a few times where political correctness has gotten in the way of victims rights leading minors to be abused)

adjl posted...

Yeah, it's like asking why adults do it. People do irresponsible things with their phones when their hormones are acting up.

AI isn't involved.
they don't detect new images.

your phone gets a list of "fingerprints" of confirmed bad images, and it makes a list of "fingerprints" of your images.
it then compares these lists to see if there are any matches.

your own pictures will never get flagged unless someone already got arrested with those pictures in their possession.

in your example "Sally" wouldn't get flagged unless "loli lover" got himself arrested and they found her photos on his phone or pc, and added those photos to the list.

although I'm wondering, maybe this could become a new method for "swatting".
hackers secretly sending people images that were doctored to match the fingerprint of images from the list.

we have to find a balance between giving people some level of privacy, but also protecting vulnerable people like children who can easily be manipulated or abused

That sounds even worse since it sounds like it won't catch any 'new' stuff and only stuff they already know about. I already don't trust identification software because people will post images of rocks that, somehow, trip just the right flags to get flagged as potential porn. That's not to mention it's only a matter of time before someone discovers it doesn't work properly on some racial group for whatever reason. It's just a bad deal through and through and through.

Thankfully this is non-trivial using modern fingerprinting systems. You'd need the fingerprint of an image in the database, and then need to spend your computer cycles trying to find an innocuous file with the same fingerprint.
