We just got the tried and true "Be thankful you have a job" line over and over from our directors. This is at a major university that has money laying around to throw at the most ridiculous things, mind you. We did get the "Heroes work here" signs and banners though, so...yay?

I got 25% hazard pay for a month, which was pretty sweet, but then the employer was like "lolno, this is way too expensive!" and got rid of it >_> There was plenty of OT at least cuz everyone was dropping like flies from Covid. Miraculously I never got it.

Well, yeah, businesses cut folks out. Then when people refused to come back afterward the businesses called on the government to end de facto UBI measures, and still not everyone came back. Hell, corporate types are still fighting companies to allow more 'work from home' time, since the pandemic proved that being in the office and sitting through meetings was largely a waste of time; outside of creative or research jobs there isn't much benefit to trudging through an office.

Paramedics and other health care workers were working without health insurance through all this. The doctors and nurses were fine of course but everybody else in the hospital network? Flip of a coin if they got fucked or not.

At least at the hospital Network I worked at, if you got covid-19, you literally didn't get paid time off. You just had to not get paid. They found some way to claim that we weren't full-time employees even though physicians had 80 hour work weeks.

Yeah meanwhile people were getting extra money for being to sit at home and do nothing and they probably made close to what I was making during it. Especially after all the gas I spend to get to work and the stress of it.

Ill never not be salty about that.

Everyone who was laid off or furloughed or whatever because of the pandemic should have been getting exactly what they were making at work- no more, no less.

So as a hospitalist, I get paid approximately 20% less than the average hospitalist salary for the region. The way it was originally sold to me, we get a quarterly bonus for meeting certain quality improvement metrics that ultimately adds up to equalization in salary. During the covid-19 pandemic, we were expected to see double the number of patients without any pay increase, but it didn't end there. One of the quality metrics is percentage of patients discharged before a certain time in the morning, and during the pandemic that was basically impossible due to case load. The tldr is that we wound up seeing over twice as many patients, but also got paid significantly less. And if we got sick, the hospital would claim that we couldn't prove we got covid at the hospital, therefore we didn't qualify for sick leave.

Mine was the opposite. If you had symptoms or even *think* you had symptoms, you got a FREE week off with almost no questions asked >_> You only had to get a test lol. (I never did this. I just scooped up all the OT that they created >_>)

But then everyone started abusing it, especially during holidays. So they put an end to that. Now you use your sick days for a week if you have a negative test. (and if you have no sick days left, you just don't get paid)

I got salty at when they gave money to buisnesses instead of the people directly under the notion that "buisnesses will give that money to their employees". Didn't fucking happen.

Almost all just kept the money. I can't remember the name of this restaurant but they received something like $100,000 from the government "for their employees". But they kept it all. Not only did they keep it all, they also told their employees that they'll only be paid in tips, that there's no hourly wage at all because the business was slowing down. The employees agreed but then found out about the $100,000 the owner got and they all walked out.

Idk if the restaurant went back up yet, but for a while, they had a "closed due to maintenance" sign up.

That dude is a fucking asshole for doing that to his employees. What a piece of shit.
The paycheck protection program required everyone to still be employed for the loan to be forgiven.

i think essential workers aren't as essential as they think they are. ER utilization was down during COVID than non-pandemic years. hospitals at less capacity. overall medical personnel doing less work but demanding more compensation. OK.

I mean, there was a time pretty early on back in March and April where our hospital was mostly empty because nobody wanted to come in during the early stages of the pandemic, but certainly by November it was always well above capacity. It's actually even worse now than it was in november, at least here in oklahoma.

And the people complaining that are long out of high school are still working those jobs? Lol. I have zero sympathy for people that are doing absolutely not a damn thing on their off time to improve their living situation. You have women making bank taking off their clothes and brushing their hair, you have dudes wising up going into higher paying jobs such as being trained to operate a forklift. People be pulling excuses out of their ass at every given turn wanting the whole planet to pity them for choosing to make a career out of entry level positions. Theres no such thing as a dead end job, just a dead end employee, now the question that begs to be asked is does that person want to be a dead end employee for the rest of their lives.

people always spout this shit but they never have any answer for what will happen if *every* adult leaves those low paying jobs for something else

If this has taught us anything, it's that we need UBI so that we can tell bosses to f*** off or pay us more. Or if they can't pay more, compensate in other ways, give free products to employees, or have a great insurance program. WORK FOR YOUR EMPLOYEES.

It also taught people they need to find better jobs.

The reason places like fast food have so low staff is no one wants to work there. But of course someone has to work there, otherwise theyd go out of business. And the day McDonalds goes out of business is the the day the sun turns into a black hole and sucks up the universe.

If youre an adult working for a company for years on end and havent been promoted whatsoever, youre a fucking loser that shows zero ambition to your employer and other higher ups.

so you think there are enough high paying jobs for the tens of millions of people who would need them if they quit their low paying jobs? and you think those high paying jobs would keep paying well when they're suddenly infused with millions of people desperate for a job?

High schoolers can't work during the morning and early afternoon. So like, shut the hell up. The jobs weren't made "for teenagers", they were made because there was a need for that role to be filled in order to speed up the process of ringing up customers and getting them out the door. The minimum wage was made to allow families to be financially secure. That's how it still should be. Nobody should have to slave away just to live.
