What if they discover Vtubers?

They will resurrect humanity just so they can rub our noses in it before they destroy us completely; then they will leave Earth for the Oort Cloud and never speak of us again.

We're all aging faster than he is. Soon we will catch up and the age order will be reversed.

I mean, the way things have been going the last couple decades, I'd be more surprised if humanity in general was around by 2040

That's recency bias, though. Modern events can seem bad because we're living through them, but compared to most of the rest of human history, we're probably living in the most golden of golden ages our species have ever known.

Even aside from comparing things like how even some of the poorest people have a quality of life higher than the average medieval noble, just looking back at the last decade or so there are still people alive who grew up being taught to hide under their desks at school to survive an atomic explosion because we were all pretty convinced WWIII was going to start tomorrow and we were going to burn the world with thermonuclear fire.

We can look at the world and scream about wealth and social inequality, but it's still mostly better than nearly any other meaningful point in human history, especially if we're focusing on major cultures as opposed to smaller hunter-gatherer groups or other microcosm communities. We can even complain about Covid, but honestly, we're only just a few years off being in the same century of a WAAAY worse outbreak. Crime is lower, global conflict is lower... for most things, it only SEEMS worse because the 24-hour news cycle and the Internet have made it possible for EVERYTHING to feel magnified and blown far out of proportion, because we hear about things now we never would have heard about even 50 years ago. We're essentially looking at the world under a microscope and being horrified by the fact that everything looks bigger.

If anything, the only real incipient threat that could take us out for realsies is probably climate change, but that would take much longer to really kick in. And it's plausible that we could eventually adjust to cope with that as well (though as a cynic and a realist, I tend to doubt we're capable of the required long-term planning and systemic thinking that would be necessary, so we might be screwed).

leaving some post-singularity AI to speculate about their creators, why they exist, and why there's such terrible music on the broadcast network they all share.

I find this to be extremely optimistic. Partly because there's a good chance we'll screw everything up before we ever figure out how to create seriously advanced AI, and partly because the Singularity as a concept is kind of magical wish-fulfillment bullshit.

When we finally manage to kill ourselves off, we aren't leaving anything of value behind.

Not really what I said at all, but I don't expect you to understand complex concepts anyway.

Or concepts in general, honestly.

It's okay, PO, I forgive you. I just tire of the cynicism especially in the face of the problems of the world when people say stuff like it could always be worse. It could also be way better too

Ohh, I agree. But again, that's not really what I was saying.

My point was more along the lines of people saying things now are worse than they've ever been before or we're going to wipe ourselves out as a species in the next couple decades are kind of asinine. Because even when you consider the things that ARE wrong, we're still better off than most of the rest of human history for nearly every single facet of human existence and behavior. And we've survived a HELL of a lot worse things than anything that's currently on our horizon. Surviving is basically what humans do, and we've got more tools in our arsenal now than most previous generations ever did.

Even as a pessimist/cynic, I'm capable of acknowledging that we're far better off than most humans throughout history, that people in The West/North America/the US/etc are far better off than most of the rest of the world, and that at least a significant part of why things can seem worse than ever before to people today is because a) we're constantly being bombarded by news, and most of it is bad, because we live in an information age and that's what draws ratings, and b) because most people completely lack historical insight.

That's not to say that things can't improve, or that we shouldn't seek to improve them, or that we should be absolutely content with what we have and we're not allowed to complain about anything because people are starving in Africa etc etc. It just means we kind of have to have a sense of perspective.

Egotism and ethnocentrism are huge problems for how we relate to the world and the other people in it, but that doesn't just apply to location but history as well. The better we understand the past and the world as a whole, the better we'd actually understand our place in it and what our reality is really like.

I'm more of the mind that issues repeat in a cyclical nature, and that the difference now is we have words or more efficient means to share concepts to match these issues that have likely been around since the first cities or city-states came along, maybe longer. We can just identify these things now. Newer issues are more specific to recent technology, rather directly, if anything.
