Artifact basics and jitte are the ones I remember off the top of my head. I think there was another finisher but can't remember

Oh, I think it was necropotence? The triple black card draw one?

I think I remember having another good banned card on me but I can't remember

A weird one

17. Crystaline Giant

So this one is weird, in that it is this high up because I am fairly certain it is my most drafted Arena Cube card. Arena cube is a lot lower power level level so I value really highly a colorless card that can win on its own, and this card does just that. If you roll hexproof the turn you play it you are almost certainly winning that game if your opponent isn't beating you badly already or your opponent isn't playing white for the wrath effects. Even if you don't get that lucky, this is a 3 mana absolute must kill.

Did I mention I would play it in every single deck I have ever drafted?

I think I might have passed this card like once ever.

Love seeing Ugin. I honesty don't think I've ever seen anyone ult him before when playing, which is wild because of how often I do see him get played. But it hardly matters because of how great his first two abilities are.

Spike is cool. I bought one of those a while back to make a deck with, but never got around to it, because the more I thought about building it, I realized that I've made busted decks before that use lots of tutor effects, and I usually take them apart for not being very fun since the games usually end up going the same way every time. I even bought a Time Walk mostly for it. I dunno, one day it'll be worth putting together. Maybe I'll make it un-Spike by mostly using banned cards in janky ways. Or since it's a silver bordered game, just pick a random card from among a stack of banned cards...that'd be pretty fun.

Love love love Crystaline giant, its one of those cards I feel comfortable dropping in basically any deck.

Edit: Inspired by this, whats one card thats not GREAT, but you stick in probably more decks than you should?

In basically any deck with some lifelink, I put Cosmos Elixer. When youre facing weenies or rush, that 2 life per turn is awesome, and artifact destruction is rare enough that it often runs unopposed the whole game.

Huh, this is a good question. I don't play enough commander to really have a good answer for a format where doing that makes sense.

Honestly this is a hot take, but probably sneak attack. I'm like "Sure I have 8 creatures in my deck. BUT ONE OF THEM IS AN ELDRAZI. IT MUST BE GOOD"

It usually is not good

Same. I've had enough games of getting all my Sol Rings, Coalition Relics, Chromatic Lanterns, Signets, etc, blown up. Feels nice to have one that at least sticks around under most scenarios.

But it does admittedly get harder to keep it with the better ones they keep printing. For now though...I still use them.

16. Archangel

LOOK HOW MASSIVE THIS THING IS. 5/5 Flier! Attacking doesn't cause it to tap!

Archangel was my favorite card when I first started playing magic. I was wowed by how huge it was. I couldn't imagine losing a game where it hit the batlefield.

Archangel was my favorite card for the first few months I played... untill a different card totally blew my mind foreshadowing foreshadowing

15. Shark Typhoon

This is another example of a card that isn't great at any point that somehow combines together to an excellent card. I think what really makes the card work is it does two things pretty well

  1. Against aggro it's a cantripping ambush viper. Trading with your opponents 2/1 or 2/2 while drawing a card for 3 or 4 mana is excellent
  2. Against control it is an uncounterable huge cantripping threat. Your opponent thinks the coast is clear and suddenly they are seeing a 6/6 haste can't be countered draw a card.

This combination is why this card is great. Cards that aren't ever dead are always way better than they look.

...

Oh you can also cast it for 6 mana. Outside of cheating it out by returing it from your graveyard or something I don't think I've ever had this happen in a game that wouldn't have just been won by cycling the card anyways. An added bonus I guess but I think I've actually cast it something like 2% of the time.

14. Temple of Malady (But really all the temples)

Temples have two things going for them
  1. They were the dual lands when I picked up magic again
  2. I think they are some of the best designed dual lands.

I think one of the problems dual lands have is they aren't interesting. Just making your mana better because they come into play untapped in certain circumstances isn't interesting. The temples are tapped dual lands that actually give you a game action which makes them exciting to play with. I kind of wish they had land subtypes so they could be fetchable becaue then I think they would show up in high powered cube lists. Oh well

The reason I picked Malady specifically is famous magic pro Ben Stark honestly thought it was pronounced

Which is hilarious

13. Elspeth Conquers Death

Sagas are sweet. While looking over my list I was surprised this was the only Saga that made the cut given how much I like dominaria. Going through the list though this is the only one that really stood out.

Lets start with this card is insane in lower powered cubes. I actually think in the very first (fairly crappy) itteration of the arena cube this was the best card. Its at worst an absurd 2 for one that gets rid of permanently any of your opponents bombs before bringing back one of yours, and the 2nd level isn't nothing either. Add in any sweet flicker effects and you can keep just stocking up on value.

U/W Control is my favorite arena cube deck, and this card is one of the reasons why I always tend to veer to white as opposed to one of the other colors.

Honestly for a card this high up on the list, I don't have much to say about it. I just really like the design of the card, I like that it is both extremely powerful and has high deckbuilding cost, and I like that it has blink synergies.

Maybe some red devotion, I started playing more competitively when Theros launched, although red devotion is of course not competitive at all.

Looking forward to the top ten!

11. Circle of Protection (Black)

When I was a kid I thought these cards were soooo busted. I was 100% sure that if I got every circle of protection out I could just never lose. How could you ever beat that?

After googling this card for the first time the thing that made me smirk the most was the fact that it didn't even protect creatures. Man, this card was not very good. Middle school me was not good at card evaluation.

I picked black because I remember this art from an iceage pack but no real reason to pick it over any other color

At my middle school all Circle of Protections were soft banned.

Some dude used COP Black and Pestilence/Lord of the Pit to prevent damage to himself.

I think most people were alright with that. I thought it was super cool. Then eventually someone who was using a black deck played him and wasn't really that hindered by the Circle naturally working and we all realized that the Circles of Protection weren't really that good.

10. Gonti, Lord of Luxury

Gonti is everything I want in a cube card.

From a power level perspective the card is great. Its worst case a 4 mana 2/3 death touch with an ETB of draw 4 cards and keep one.

From a psychological perspective however It strikes dread in your opponents soul as they think of all the possible cards you could have taken and that is really why this card made top 10. Ive countered Gonti before in cubes because I didnt want to deal with the fear of the unknown. Heaven forbid you cast this against a combo deck and snag their win con and you accidentally make them lose the game, I have definitely just left cards in exile before because it was safer than casting them and possibly letting them get them back.

And of course like many of the other cards on this list, blink effects are a riot.

If there is anything more demoralizing than having a gonti steal your time walk or ancestral recall I dont want to hear it.

9. Rules Lawyer

As I mentioned previously, a coworker and I bought a box of unstable to play sealed together. This card led to one of the most memorable games of magic of all time for me.

This card is dumb

It is one of the dumbest most unbeatable cards I have ever seen. It was like a never ending journey of realizing one at a time all the things that couldn't happen. Oh, well you don't die.... Oh combat damage doesn't apply to any of your creatures huh...

Evetually I think I top decked my one outer of

To win but it was hilarious.

As a person who loves impending doom on sticks, this card was absolutely incredible. Best Unset card ever printed.

8. Yorion, Sky Nomad

I want to start by acknowledging companion was kind of a debacle, but I think after the companion nerf Yorion is in a great spot.

The cost of companioning Yorion makes deck building more interesting because it forces you to play more cards, but at the same time that isn't a big cost if you are playing a less streamlined (and generally more interesting) deck. Yorion itself is a sweet card that has interesting combo potentials.

After the companion nerf there are probably only 3 or 4 playable companions, and Yorion is definitely the most interesting of them.

It was awful.
