I was just made aware of the existence of this scene.

Contrary to what common sense would tell you, this is in fact unedited. This is how the scene appears in the movie. This is not a bunch of scenes shoved together by a fan, this is how the movie editors decided this movie should play in real time.

Wouldn't calling it out explicitly would ruin the point?

No? Subtlety doesn't inherently make the message stronger. If anything it's the opposite.

Believe me when I say that the rest of the movie is so absurdly maximalist in the complete opposite direction that if "HBO Max bad" was supposed to be a cry for help by the writers, it is completely and utterly buried under the bullshit.

If it is self-aware, it tries extremely hard to be mostly an ad and not look self-aware at all, defeating the point.

I really can't stress enough how much corporate bullshit is packed into this movie, it drowns out any other interpretation.

But ok if it turns out the creators made the movie as bad as possible on purpose so that people do NOT buy HBO to watch the HBO ad, then yeah that's a genius self-aware move. That's some big brain shit though, not sure that's what's going on here

I mean it can be self-aware without going as far as saying "DON'T watch HBO plz!" You'd expect them to explicitly call it out then, sure, but that's obviously not the intent.

Where the self-awareness sounds like it's coming from is them basically knowing they're effectively trapping you in HBO Max by advertising all the shit on it. It's basically a self pat on the back kind of meta joke, which is actually fairly common.

It's too confused about its own self-awareness for it to feel like a pat on the back.

Another example: the plot starts when Don Cheadle comes up with plot to digitally insert LeBron James into movies to get more viewers. This is presented as Bad and LeBron rejects it. Shortly after this, LeBron is digitally inserted into the Looney Tunes world, and the Tunes are inserted into other stuff like in that clip above. So, the thing they just told you was bad. This would be an easy self-aware dig, but the problem is: this is legitimately the most interesting and creative part of the movie. This movie sucks! A lot! And this part isn't good (actually there's a Wonder Woman segment that is unironically pretty cool and well-animated) but it's honestly the best part.

It's not that deep, dude. This movie is a total mess.

Edit: If I had to make a guess, it would be that the self-aware bits are remnants from an earlier version and when the call was made to go full corporate the writers instead just went all-in on that stuff, because it feels like all the care went into the 2D and crossover segments

I could be way off base, but it sounds like it's not trying to make some message out of its self-awareness, which is what you seem to be looking for. It's like if you have a boss that is known for making everybody stay and work late, and then one day they make a dig at themselves by making a joke about how much it'd suck to have a boss that'd make everybody stay and work late. And then they keep making people stay and work late. It's not self-awareness in a "are we the baddies?" way. It's self-awareness in a "We literally do what we're making fun of and we get away with it fuck yeah go us" way.

I'm not saying it's deep at all. I'm saying it's a very surface level self-awareness.

It's basically gloating.

EDIT: Though yeah your edit is also possible.

Sure, but if it's self-aware in a "We are the baddies!" way that's even worse, and it's still a message.

The other thing is, it's also very clearly a LeBron James vanity project, and LeBron of course is opposed to Don Cheadle aka HBO Max. So you really can't get around that mess.

Edit: By which I mean, it's obviously a meta joke that Movie LeBron doesn't want to work with WB despite Real LeBron literally being in a movie by WB, but it's totally pointless. It's played straight, it's not funny, it doesn't even qualify as a joke tbh. It's so bad

To be fair, most meta jokes aren't actually funny. They're just supposed to be a sort of "ah-ha I get it" kind of thing. They can be, but I'm honestly having trouble thinking of many examples.

That said I don't feel like actually defending this movie so I'll just agree with you it's bad because it is bad.

She makes two baskets (one against bugs when she's trying to teach him to respect her instead of treating her like a sex object) and gets saved from being crushed under a monstar by Bugs so that she can further amp up the furry appeal by acting like a sex object. Pardon the pun, but she's completely two dimensional.
That's okay though, Space Jam is a trash movie that's only meant to appeal to kids, just like Space Jam 2.

That not a very good way to defend bad movies. Kids are stupid and will love anything, but that doesn't mean we should just give terrible kids movies a pass. It's not impossible to make good movies for kids; let's make that the standard so parents don't have to watch something this bad at least once a day for a month.

Also, kids aren't going to look back on this like 90's kids look back on the original. Lebron isn't as big as Jordan was, and neither are the Looney Tunes. It'll just be another forgettable kids movie.

I want to point to Shrek as the near king of good references. Good references can be missed. They are subtle. I bet there are people in this topic who still 20 years later haven't realize Lord Farquad is a pun.
