Gave up on it when they made a reference to Harry Potter world and the joke(?) was that Bugs Bunny called Lebron a nerd for being excited to be hufflepuff

That was like 15 minutes into a 2 hour movie

Also Lebron told his son to play basketball instead of programming his video game something like 4 times in the first 15 minutes. WONDER WHAT THE LESSON IS GOING TO END UP BEING

It couldn't have been 15 minutes because I'm pretty sure Bugs doesn't even show up until like 26 minutes in. That's how bad it is.

Not because I expect it to be anything but crap or anything, but because I'm anxious to see people suddenly pretend the original was a good movie

I stand by the original wasnt a good movie, but it was an absurd movie where people tried and failed to make a good movie and there are little sparks of genius in it (Like why the hell does bill Murray even exist.) And the soundtrack is 100% kick ass

I love how the movie is accurate that Lebron is just an unlikeable person. He probably treats his son IRL the same way.

I still like my pitched idea that Lebron ends up being the bad guy.

It was always considered a bad film we were just young when it came out.

And to be honest, my reaction to this topic title was well yes but so was Space Jam 1, I loved it when I was young but having revisited it it is awful unfortunately.

I'm 40 minutes in and it's a silly fanciful movie for kids and families, much like the first. LeBron is being more expressive and allowing himself to be a part of way more gags than MJ, and that might be the highlight so far. There are also franchise references out the wazoo - it definitely feels like Ready Player One in that regard. Unfortunately, the music is forgettable (like Leon said, the original had a legit incredible soundtrack).

I made it 5 more minutes because I was curious how the Austin powers reference went.

Holy crap that was the least funny most on the nose reference I have ever seen. How did nobody make this not suck

Also I reiterate how much the soundtrack carries the first movie. It isnt good, but it gives the Andrew WK vibe to me.

Yeah, Space Jam 1 was a quintessential "right place/right time movie" and worked as a result.

-Jordan just won a championship
-Jordan was actually considered likable back then
-Looney Tunes were still popular, though I wouldn't call it "prime Looney Tunes"
-Yes, it was a cashgrab, but it had heart oozing from every orifice
-Lola Bunny

Meanwhile, Space Jam 2.....
-Features an overrated, unlikable player who just got embarrassingly dumped from the playoffs(and didn't even have the sportsmanship to congratulate the opponents)
-Looney Tunes are no longer popular(with modern audiences) or even relevant
-No one asked for it(to be fair, no one asked for the first one either)
-There's no "heart" in the product, and even as a cashgrab, it doesn't really work
-Whatever abomination is being called "Lola Bunny"

Should have made Space Jam 2 while the Warriors Dynasty was alive. Would have worked better(people actually like Steph Curry).

It's been probably 20-ish years since I've seen the original but it wasn't nearly as "jam as many pop culture references as possible"-ized was it? I feel like it wasn't, most of the extent of that came from the basketball players themselves right? Ready Player One-ing it for this one seems a bit weird, like I was on board with some of them I saw but I didn't realize the movie was apparently nothing BUT that kind of stuff

The original was about selling Looney Tunes to a new audience. This one is about selling HBO Max by reminding people of everything they own that resides there.

I think they realized that Looney Tunes are far less relevant today, which at least partially explains the litany of other franchises stuffed into this movie. I paused it at the halfway mark, but IMO so far all the non-Tune stuff (DC Universe, Harry Potter, The Matrix, freakin Mad Max) is way funner than Bugs bugs-ing it up.

this movie was so bad my dislike went into negative integers and looped back around and I kinda love it

an absolute trainwreck, my mouth was slightly agape the whole time at how shamelessly it presented itself as marketing nonsense curated by a board of directors that will all someday roast in the bottom layers of hell. an achievement in filmmaking if I have ever seen one

i unironically derived more enjoyment out of watching this trash fire than black widow which I fell asleep during. space jam 2 commanded my attention like i was alex in a clockwork orange (an appropriate analogy i believe)

It sounds that way, and it could be a meta joke by the writers but it's never called out explicitly and is mostly a throwaway plot point played completely straight. There is zero substance to it.
