I swear, I've had to buy a new one every year or so and in that year I maybe open 20 cans.

Maybe the electric ones last longer?

I got an EZ Duz it and it's holding strong. Just don't let it sit around wet or it can develop rust

have you tried a non-mechanical can opener? they're tricky to use but once you know how they're pretty invincible

Rusting may have been the issue. I always spray the can's explosive juice off them, but i should've paper toweled them I guess. I'm going to pick up one of those electric ones with the knife sharpeners on the back. My ex took my old one. That damn thing could open cans like magic. I never did use the sharpener part though.

can's explosive juice
hmmm... can shouldn't be "explosive". that can be an indication that the contents have gone rotten, since the decomposing builds pressure. it should even maybe do the opposite, and suck some air in when you break the seal.

(I know this from experience attempting to open a large can of rotten olives, that sprayed me in the face with rotten olive juice as I opened it.)

for can openers, I have been using one of these for many years without issue (though it opens the can a bit differently than a regular one) (ie: by sawing the top off rather than by pushing the lid out):

I was being hyperbolic. The tuna doesn't squirt out. It just shakes a bit when I'm peeling the cap with the tool and gets on it. Especially when I'm having to just use the clap to manually circle crimp away the top by individual piercing like 30 times.

I learned about the fizzing and pressurized containers in military school. Happened with tomato soup.

I have one of those bladeless can openers that basically break the vacuum seal off the top of the can.

No rust, no sharp edges, low chance of the top coming into contact with the food.

Had it for a couple of years now.

Looks sorta like the one in this vid.

This is what I use. They look really weird and are a bit tricky to use if you're not familiar with it. I've had my roommates borrow it and they just look at it funny because it has only the one arm and doesn't look like it should work. It doesn't clamp onto the can like regular can openers, instead the wheel grabs onto the rim. It works great, the edges are usually very smooth, the blade never comes in contact with the food and never gets that nasty crud on it, and you can use the lid to cover the can again so you can put the leftovers in the fridge.

That particular can opener does actually cut the lid off. It cuts into the outside edge of the lid where it folds down over the side of the can.

At 26 seconds this video has a crude drawing showing the details.
