Honnestly girl is a compliment, meaning someone is hot/young if anything (and not just used as a generalized term).
Boy can mean a guy is immature etc, and is not often used as a compliment at all, even the term fuck boy, is mostly derogatory (kinda like calling a girl a slut). I've never called a woman a girl in a bad way, and I use girl to describe women all the time (although admittingly usually not much older women). In general though you can use both girl and boy to describe either gender in many ways without meaning anything. I'm gonna go hang with the boys for a bit honey. I think girl can have separate connotations.
There is the boy/girl equivalent, which is for someone younger. My boy/girl is starting 1st grade today. There is also the guy/girl equivalent which is for adults. The term "guy" really look off so boy/man really isn't used in a casual sense, whereas "gal" feels antiquated and chicks often get annoyed when you call them chicks. ParanoidObsessive posted...
