• 3 third places

While the missing third places was the previous champions, and one of them, Ukraine, is the only team left from their group. That feels pretty crazy and shows the glaring holes in this format because the group games matter so much less than they should.

Said it earlier but Ukraine progressing out of the group with 2 losses plus a 1 goal win against Macedonia is a joke.

Yeah, though let's be fair, if we'll mention that the win was a 1 goal difference, then we should mention that the the losses were too.

My point was more their only win came by 1 goal against a team that is traditionally a whipping boy and hadn't ever qualified for the world cup or euros prior to this. They only made it because of the expanded format and a weak playoff path (Georgia and Kosovo)

I do get where you're coming from @ShatteredElysium . Ive never been a fan of 3rd place finishers getting through to knockout. But they reached the quarters on their own merit by beating the team that ranked ahead of Spain in the group stage. This is why third place teams face first place teams.

In fact Portugal are the only third placed team not to reach the quarters

I'm talking about Macedonia, the only team they beat in the group stage. Basically they made it through the group stage by losing to the two teams that traditionally make it and beating the team that never makes it and is a whipping boy by only 1 goal.

Sure they made it to the quarter finals by beating a team that deserved to be there but realistically Ukraine did not deserve to be in the round of 16 to begin with. 1 win against Macedonia and 2 losses should not qualify any team for the knockout stages of a major tournament
