No military shooters on this list!

It was hard to categorize some of these. I mean, I'm not sure where something like Papers, Please would go.

Games like Cuphead and Celeste have the highest peaks for me, so I voted for that, but Metroidvanias are more consistent and therefore a very close second place.

Fortunately the La-Mulana games fit both genres. The first one is 5 bucks on the Steam Summer Sale, folks - go buy it now.

Metroidvanias <3 Hollow Knight, Ori, Yoku, Axiom, Dead Cells

But shout out to depression RPGs and platformers (and depression platformers, hey Celeste!), and unique concepts too of course. Indie is where all the fun stuff is.

Rocket League is one of my favorite games. It was an indie game when released, so...Sports.

I can't think of a genre I've played more than one game in, but Hollow Knight rocks so I picked Metroidvania

I considered including Rocket League, PUBG, and Minecraft, but they've grown so much that it's hard to consider them indie these days. Well, that's why I left "Other" in.

Metroidvania, though it's really a shame how many indie games claim to be Metroidvanias but actually aren't.

Hard to decide between platformers (Super Meat boy, Celeste, Shovel Knight) and Metroidvania (Ori, Hollow Knight, The Messenger, Bloodstained if it counts)

Missing a major category: First-person exploration (sometimes referred to as walking simulators, though I don't like that term)

What Remains of Edith Finch, Unfinished Swan, Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Return of the Ones Dinn, Dear Esther, Gone Home, etc

That's the genre I vote for btw

I thought most of the popular card battlers were roguelikes, like Slay the Spire.

What's masocore?

Presumably, masochistic platformer categorized by quick respawns (you die over and over repeatedly until you get over it.)

I'm torn. I like survival crafting, but I'm lukewarm to a lot of the genre. I got a bunch out of Terraria, which mixes but survival crafting and Metroidvania elements, but I also get a ton of replay out of roguelikes/roguelites (it doesn't hurt that I played a LOT of Nethack when I was in college.) Ultimately, I think the roguelike part wins, providing each run can provide some kind of benefit towards future ones (Noita is... kind of ballbusting in that regard.)

really no shmup option huh

i guess if we want to be technical that's not an indie(-oriented) genre but just old-school or doujin

best subgenre is shmup fighter hybrid

I've played a few of the more popular ones, and I just found them incredibly boring. Hell, I get annoyed even in AAA titles when the shooter mechanics are taken away from me and I have to walk slowly somewhere while someone explains the plot to me. I'm very much a "games should be about the gameplay" kind of person.

Well yeah, those games aren't designed around that aspect and are often inelegantly shoved in to give a false sense of depth to the story!

But fair enough, no genre is for everybody. I for one have never been able to get into the fighting game genre (unless Smash counts). But there is a wider variety of 'walking simulators' than I think they're given credit, it's not all Telltale or Life is Strange style!

I don't really think of TT games as Walking Simulators, simply due to the choices the player makes having an effect on the story. It's stuff like Dear Esther and Gone Home I find dull.

Though I guess The Stanley Parable is a WS, and that shit is hilarious.

I do generally think Walking simulators are trash but I did kinda enjoy Firewatch.

Metroidvania and Masocore (where ever the fuck that name came from) gets my vote because of Ori and Cuphead.

Retro platformer should have been an option for Shovel Knight and games of its kind. Would have gotten my vote.

I'd say 3D platformers like A Hat in Time, but we need more of them first.

I'm probably going with Masocore for the poll though. I can only play one every couple of years, but they're almost always super satisfying
