I am getting a bit tired of Adventure creatures also but I don't think it's true that standard lacks diversity. There's about 10 different decks right now that are all viable at the top level such that it wouldn't be a surprise to see any of them win the next big tournament, and there's at least a handful of others in whatever the "almost as good" tier is.

I made a really dumb white/blue artifact deck for common/uncommon FNM rules and somehow twice in a row against two different people I went from huge upper hand to losing to Sleep lol

Ive only seen Barbarian, what else is there?

I kind of wish they did more with the Party mechanic in this set, it fits the theme so well and Ive always thought it was underutilized.

I'm wondering if there's something you can do in Historic with Bard Class and Birgi, God of Storytelling. I can't think of anything concrete that seems worthwhile, but there's a ton of random Legendary Commander-esque cards in the format I don't know about.

These infinite mana type decks have always felt close in the format, but I don't quite know if this is the thing to push them or not.

It was pointed out to me that they couldn't use Party here because that only covers 4 of the DnD classes. It seems like it was more of a mechanic that had incidental synergy with the past few sets than a recurring theme.

Most of the 12 have gotten revealed. Theyve been showing up in pretty quick succession since Barbarian.

Party wouldnt work great with this set just because it would make them focus too much on those four classes. It wouldnt leave much room for barbarians, rangers, bards, etc. It felt like every humanoid creature in that last Zendikar set was one of the four party classes.

i just wanna throw in some context as a long-time d&d fan

'the forgotten realms' were fine, but i've always been biased towards 'greyhawk' instead

greyhawk was the original d&d setting, and forgotten realms is the brighter, fluffier, higher fantasy world with a bazillion good-guy high level wizards wandering around preventing anything really dangerous from happening

i like silly, but i like it when my players and i are the source of the silliness

i think d&d is better for having both, frankly!

Ulti, do you not know how to shuffle or something? No one in the world has over stuffed their limited decks with land like you say you do and gotten mana screwed so often. It literally has to be something wrong with you.

I do think Magic's mana system is quite bad. Duelmasters and Kaijudo were both better TCG's for a reason. (well, several really, but a resource system that doesn't randomly cause players to not have access to resources is one of them.)

Yeah, I dunno. The mana system does have its flaws, but what you're talking about (if not exaggerated) is some Job/Odysseus levels of shit luck.

The mana in Magic is iconic for a reason tbh.

Ive been mana fucked and then mana flooded in the very next match, same deckthats just how it goes.

It doesnt need overhauled, its a card game, there will always be luck involved.

Well I don't think it needs to be or should be overhauled. (I know Ulti said that, I'm just clarifying what I'm saying.) I do think better systems exist, but the games in question have been designed around those systems from the start. I don't think it would really work to just try and change Magic's system on a dime like that.

As if by cosmic justice, I just played a ranked match against someone with the same red/blue deck, and got absolutely bodied because it took 6 turns to draw 1 red mana lol.

I don't know how useful they would be outside of limited, but flavor-wise I absolutely adore the cards like "You See A Pair Of Goblins"

I honestly think Ulti is just bad at magic. I have never in my entire life lost 2 matches in a row from mana issues, and I get fairly tilted when I lose matches to it.

I think him indicating he is running 18 lands all the time is just a clue that he doesnt know how to build good decks and he is blaming all his losses on mana. Ive won games where I got stuck on 3 mana all the time by effectively managing resources until more lands came. My guess is he is just losing every time he doesnt get perfect mana because his deck isnt good.

Like if he never saw more than 3 lands in esper control, he either wasnt mulliganing correctly, he cant shuffle, or more likely he just lost to aggressive decks and obviously it was the lands that were the problem.

People who complain about persistent bad luck either:

1) have no idea what they're doing, but think they do, or

2) think it's important that others feel bad for them, or

3) lack the ability to notice and appreciate when luck is on their side

Aside from a couple mythics, I also have been extremely underwhelmed by the set for constructed play

It's good to have breather sets. Modern Horizons 2 was one of the most loaded sets in years, so it's nice to have a set that is pretty worthless follow it.

MH2 isn't standard legal, so that's not really what people are comparing this set to. I'm pretty sure I've pointed that out already. The problem people are having with this set is that it doesn't look like it will have any serious impact on standard. All the new mechanics are clearly for limited, and there almost certainly won't be any new decks coming out of this.

The sets constructed players are really comparing this to are Eldraine and Ikoria, which will continue to be the dominating forces in standard. This set looks weak next to Strix which looks weak next to Kaldheim, so the trepidation is that standard will be virtually the same until rotation. Thankfully if you play on Arena Standard 2022 will be an option to shake things up and see if maybe there are some great cards/decks that just can't survive in a format defined by those two sets.

Thats absolutely what I, and my guess anyone who doesnt play exclusively standard, are comparing it to.

Even if you are an EDH only player for example chances are you still see way fewer exciting cards here.

Even if you are interested in it for standard purposes, it still doesnt look like any real changes are happening until bonecrusher and company rotate out.

I don't understand that, then. MH2 is only meant for older constructed formats, and is a product that can only happen every couple of years. Hell, there should have never been a Modern Horizons in the first place. It was a terrible idea and only works as a cash grab.

You will never ever ever see a set with that power level pop up in standard and you're crazy if you think a standard legal set should be any where near that strong. I don't know what drugs you have to be on to think this or any regular set should be comparable to a modern horizons set, but you should get off of them.

EDH/Commander is not a constructed format. Its a fun, kitchen-table house rules format that ignores or replaces several rules from constructed rules... and like Modern Horizons, they too get non-standard sets every couple of years that are just for them and could only happen on a rare occasion.

And yes, I addressed how it looks in standard right now.

I think Strixhaven had a lot more strength than people initially gave it credit for.

Expressive Iteration and Elite Spellbinder have proved really strong in several formats. Prismari Command and Magma Opus have seen a reasonable amount of play as well. I'm also convinced that Magecraft could be a strong strategy in Standard after Bonecrusher Giant rotates out.

Kaldheim still might have more but I don't think I'd say Strixhaven is significantly weaker.
