Keep in mind that modern wrestling is far goofier than it ever was and NY wrestling (the WWE) was always more cartoonish than other parts of the country. The 90s was really when it started to go to shit, when lucha (which is highly contrived) began to become more mainstream.

Modern WWE is pretty hard to watch since they have so much filler that has nothing to do with wrestling. The idiots there think Pete Rose is a bigger deal to wrestling fans than actual wrestlers.

It's really not. If anything, we've spent the last decade or so going back the other way - most gimmicks these days are "guy who wrestles", as opposed to supernatural weirdos, murderclowns, Shockmasters, evil midgets, and people who think they're The Crow (okay, so we still have a guy who thinks he's The Crow).

Sure, it's goofier than it was in the 50s-70s (though there was still some pretty goofy shit going on then as well), but Jim Cornette continues to be one of the few people who actually believe that pretending the last 50 years didn't happen would somehow magically revitalize the entire industry. And he's still the guy who booked a Ninja Turtle.
