Do you think the marines corps needs to overhaul these training exercises?

The United States Marine Corp has launched an investigation after a 19 y/o recruit died during a grueling 54 hour training exercise known as the "Crucible", a gruelling training where marines are put to the extremes with NO FOOD OR SLEEP for DAYS!!

Pfc. Dalton Beals passed away partway through the exercise that took place on Parris Island in South Carolina

He was assigned to the Echo Company in the 2nd Recruit Training Battalion where the crucible took place for an intense 13 week boot camp

They released a statement with "Our deepest condolences go out to Dalton's family and to the Marines and staff at Echo Company"

The websites states this series of challenges that tests recruits physical strength, skills and marines corps values they learned through training and are only allowed a limited amount of food or sleep

They won't reveal however at what stage he died in that included an intense 9 mile hike and concludes with them receiving a pin that signifies the title of Marine

Spokesman Bobby Yarbrough said Beals would receive a title posthumously

He is the 8th trainee to die since 2000 and back in 2016 a female recruit jumped to her death after enduring a verbal abuse from one commander.

Beals is a native of New Jersey who graduated from Pennsville Memorial High School

His mom, Stacie paid tribute to her son describing him as the most sincere, kindhearted, sweet and amazing young man

A gofundme was launched for more than 26,000

Do you think this training exercise should be overhauled?

Do they literally not have medical personnel on hand? Should probably be illegal.

His apparent weight fluctuates a lot in the photos.

But yea if people are dieing they need to cut back on the extremes.

Yeah, I understand wanting to have tough training regimens, but if they aren't prepared for people to need to drop out for medical reasons, that's just straight up negligent.

The crucible is meant to test whether or not you're battle ready. Clearly he was not.

So I have done the crucible. It isn't that challenging, realistically, and last time they reported a Marine had died during bootcamp it was actually suicide. You are given a 3 day supply of MREs and you get at least 4 hours of sleep every night (4 is the minimum if you're stuck on firewatch at the shittiest rotation).

Basically this doesn't add up. Either he ate all of his MREs on the first night... which is unlikely given you're running your ass off, or something else happened, or it was just a weird accident.... which is probably the most likely.

It's mostly obstacle courses for hours on end and then PT. I did it in July and people did pass out but there is staff and medical on site at all times.

Makes sense. When I was in Basic for the Air Force, we had medical staff all over the place. Especially during BEAST week...

Marine corps boot camp is notorious for hiding their hazing, though. So I wouldn't be suprised.

Idk why anyone volunteers for the military in the year of our lord 2021. You know it's a dead end job and the government won't take care of you when you're all fucked up physically and mentally once you're discharged. How is it worth it?

Id disagree. I knew plenty of guys that I was in with that stayed simply because its easy and pays the bills. Ive met even more that treated it like a glorified welfare program, especially the fatties that knew how to game the system before the army kinda started cracking down on it around the time I separated.

and the VA disability is a lifetime guaranteed income for the ones that game the system too. I know plenty of people that collect anywhere from 60% (~$1100 a month) to 100% (~$3000). For a lot of those people it was the best 3-5 year investment they could ever make.

i can only speak for the army, since that was the branch I was in, the Air Force and coast guard seem at least relatively professional.

A bunch of people I know have been getting disability pay from the Air Force, too. And it's not a bad amount, from what I hear. Many getting 100%... And many also use it to get free college. And not only for them. But also for a wife or child. Not to mention they even have spouse/child programs sometimes. And if you live off base, you get extra money for food and housing.

I mean the main time being in the military sucks is when a major war is going on, now there is always some war going on these days but depending on what you do you might not be deployed to that area.

I also was surprised to see this article because I have been told they made Marine basic training far more harsh back in the 80s-90s or before that time. The current Marine basic training is a shell of it's former self and the hell they used to put guys through. Sure, being say a Navy Seal or something is still a nightmare to go through, but that type of thing is not for the average military person.

I also will say every wannabe Marine I ever met was gun ho as hell about being one, they all seemed eager as fuck to get on the front lines ASAP.

Same with Air Force, tbh... Every time someone new gets to the base, people ask them about basic and tech school. And its always much easier...

The pay is good and a lot of people that join come from poorer backgrounds where maybe the best job they could get was flipping burgers or operating a cash register. I would certainly take military to that horrible fate.

Although to be fair, if I were to go into the military it would be the air force and not the marines, but the marines do get the coolest uniforms I guess
