This is a dumb argument. Stores and restaurants got closed down then had heavy occupation restrictions and mask ordinances got implemented all over the place. If you want to argue that everything we did was pointless, go ahead, but we far from did nothing. Businesses shut down, millions lost their jobs... you'd have to be fucking delusional to think that wasn't a direct result of us trying to "flatten the curve." But go ahead, say that everything we did was pointless. That'll sure teach people to trust the scientists in the future.

What I assume red's referring to is the fact that too many idiots undermined those efforts by refusing to even wear masks, let alone follow any of the other measures. The people so against the efforts literally prolonged them by refusing to listen.

We didn't get to find out if "trust the science" would have worked or not because too many people refused to even try, and local/state governments also fighting against it didn't help, either.

Regardless of what he meant, the problem is that if you say what we did do was pointless then it sends the idea that we shouldn't have done anything.

That's... not an equivalent at all. If we made it the equivalent then the guy does stop smoking and dies of lung cancer anyway. Was it pointless for him to stop smoking, or did stopping when he did at least prolong his life as compared to not quitting?

Saying we didn't "flatten the curve" suggests it was pointless to try. The curve could have been far less flat if we did nothing, and not acknowledging that fact isn't helpful.

Not saying this at all.

Saying we didn't flatten the curve because people didn't actually follow the science and measures put in front of them.

It in no way says our efforts didn't help or that they were pointless. Just that the idea that we could stop the pandemic in 15 days would have required full buy in.

Yep not saying this. The original post was in regards to flattening it to where our lockdown measures would only have to last 15 days. Which obviously, we did not do.

Saying we didn't "flatten the curve" suggests it was pointless to try. The curve could have been far less flat if we did nothing, and not acknowledging that fact isn't helpful.

Anyway, to go back to this. You are completely misunderstanding. Some of the US undertook those measures, that was great. But we have this dumb system where rather than have any federally mandated restrictions can happen we have states that take guidelines from the federal government and then do whatever the fuck they want.

So some places made no attempt to flatten the curve. While 15 days to flatten the curve was being promoted, we had a president tweeting "liberate michigan" or whatever. We didn't "stop smoking". We had some people stop smoking and some people decide to start smoking extra to make up for up for it.

So yes, we flattened the curve some. But we didn't flatten the curve anywhere near where we needed it to be to stop a coming surge. Was it pointless? No? Did we flatten the curve -some-? Yes. Did we ultimately fail at dealing with COVID effectively? Yes.

I'm not sure where the argument is coming from here.

But the thing is, you really are downplaying what we did. You completely ignored the effects of what we did do until you were questioned on it, and even still your response is a sheepish "yes, we flattened the curve some." At the same time, you're advocating that we could have done so much more that it's very hard to believe you. We could have done better, but you're presenting it like we could have practically ended covid in just 15 days, when the reality is that without continuous lockdowns we would have still seen later spikes in the curve. You are way overestimating the best case scenario and underplaying the value of what we did do.

I didn't say any of the things you are saying I did so I'm not sure where you are getting this. You are simply reading into my post wrong for whatever reason. You took me taking a shot at someone saying something dumb("LOL 15 days to flatten the curve" is a dumb right wing talking point) in the lightest way possible as me saying something I didn't say at all.

And you are way underestimating the worst case scenario. You think if millions of people are dying just for going to the grocery store then the economy is still going to chug along no problem? "Hey anyone wanna go to the bar tonight?" "Nah sorry I don't to literally kill people, maybe next weekend." As if you don't see what's happening in Brazil and India?? You don't live in an exceptional bubble. You can look around the world for examples of how things could have gone. We're not India fortunately, but we definitely could've been New Zealand.
