The spoiler list for the upcoming Survivor Season 41 has been put out and CBS did not joke when they said they would be inclusive as before 3/4 of the cast was white, it appears only 1/4 of this cast is white as the majority is now now a minority cast member with 6 black people being the biggest majority for once as many of the season winners have been white males CBS said they wanted to make sure that its casts reflects that of a changing america demographic where minorities make up a large portion. You want to really make a victory for diversity, don't try to get brownie points and just be like "oh yeah it looks like this season we happen to have a much bigger group of X minority" if people bring iup. Also this logic only makes sense if they are like "look we admit we were heavily biasing for while people in the past so that's why we want to do the opposite now". I hope we get to a point where the people are picked in a way completely agnostic of race and nobody makes a big deal of race in anything because it isn't a big deal. Trying to apply for any of these shows as a minority means you compete against other minorities for finite slots. The demographic makeup of the US overall is irrelevant since different makeups occur in different parts of the US. Thus, depending where you live, seeing 95% white people constantly isnt accurate. I do acknowledge that historically casting directors have been racist as fuck, and I always resented them for that. If you track the data closlely you can see if the data is not blind across a dimension you intend it to be, then you can correct for that and even only employ casting directors and others who follow that Aiming for quotas is dumber and much worse. It pushes us in the wrong direction. First, they relied almost exclusively on casting recruits as opposed to fans who wanted to be on the show, and second... most importantly... they literally racially segregated the tribes by race as in the game (season 13) started with an all white tribe, an all black tribe, an all Hispanic tribe and an all Asian tribe. This was planned for season 14 too but one player quit at the last second so they only had 19 players and had to reformat the season... so overall, their efforts backfired. Hopefully that will not happen this time. Spoilers for season 13: 4/5 white players all made it to final 8 while only 4/15 POC made it to final 8... however, the white players were all voted out back to back to back to back at that point and those final 4 POC were the final 4 of the game. Spoilers to season 14: ~~The final 3 players left were all black.~~ I am kind of a bit of an expert on this show and joe40001 couldn't tell anyone here anything the fuck about it that he didn't look up on wikipedia. Also, this development is no surprise, since there has been a lot of outcry from former POC players who felt they were not well represented on the show and were overlooked for "returning player" seasons and the more successful ones were kind of swept under the rug by the network/production and I can definitely see that, so this is a step in the right direction, but hopefully it isn't also 2 steps back like seasons 13 and 14 were. but yeah Joe if you want to have a proper debate and prove you know anything about the show and have any insight about it, feel free to start. I've watched every season and I've read up on a ton of background info and analysis that moderate fans would know nothing about, let alone casuals or random people clicking on this topic because they see race and want to complain about it from either side of the issue. Hell I would even try to get on it myself sometime if they would stop with the humid fucking tropical climates >_> (they always film in Fiji now and I'd get medevac'd from heat exhaustion and dehydration on the first day if I was on now lol) --- I do not receive notifications, so using the @ feature will not do anything. Ive come to be cynical about media in general. I read your previous post though and respect it. Like I said, I'm a bit of an expert. I know people who follow and interact with some former players on social media so I often learn about upcoming season info before the general public does. I know (from this site, on another board actually) a youtuber who makes analysis/opinion/ranking videos about Survivor who gets about the same view counts on his videos as some actual former Survivor players (nothing crazy, like 5 digits to low 6 digits) and have actually played in Survivor and Big Brother themed user-hosted competitions with him on this site. I was even in a Survivor/Big Brother competition on CE years ago (he was not in that one) that had 100 players to start (highest player count in US Survivor is 20, highest in English-speaking non-US Survivor is 24, which would be the Australian version) and I actually won it (competing against 99 others) so I have insights into the psychology and strategy of such games that are so far beyond player demographics that player demographics don't even matter. Is this optics on CBS' part? Sure... but there isn't any logic behind it. Every season is cast to have equal numbers of male and female players (8-10 of each). If CBS was only willing to cast 5 dudes out of 10 total dudes and I was their 6th pick and thus potentially lost my spot due to racial quotas because only the top 5 were picked, I would absolutely not be pissed off or butthurt or whatever. The margin we are talking about is so slim (typically thousands to tens of thousands of people apply per season and casting will also recruit instead of just sticking to strictly applications, plus everyone they ultimately choose has to be cleared for a number of factors such as legal and medical), so the argument "they should pick people based on racial population census data!" falls flat on its face, genitals and ass at the same time because it means 1 or 2 cast spots per season (out of thousands to tens of thousands of applicants/recruits) might potentially change but are not guaranteed to... plus they hang on to submissions and applicants can submit for later seasons. Some players tried to get on the show for like 10+ seasons before they were finally cast, so it's not like you get the one chance and they toss your video in the trash and blacklist you from ever trying to get on again :P. I just wanted to make it perfectly clear right out of the gate that anyone who might want to argue with me itt is arguing with someone who has watched all 40 seasons and has been a fan of the show for 15ish years has more background and behind the scenes knowledge than knowledge from what has actually aired... not just some keyboard warrior that saw a topic about race and decided to click and offer an uninformed knee jerk opinion --- I do not receive notifications, so using the @ feature will not do anything.
