Get the fuck over it, there's no real reason to think that there's a problem with the obviously queer coded lady being officially confirmed as lesbian in a reboot in a more accepting era. At least, there shouldn't be any problem with it unless you have a problem with lesbians.

my only problem is that theyre just deleting Howard, I loved that dynamic they had and I feel like they could handle this so much better by having Howard be gay and Betty be lesbian and they got married for legal purposes. Thats always how their relationship felt to me anyways Howard is totally gay-coded

this would actually be a counter-productive change as far as progressiveness because it pigeonholes Betty as a stereotypical pushy butch lesbian instead of a loud assertive straight woman who's a power mom (who are very much real, sometimes the wife is the boss in the house and the guy's comfortable with it)

im glad when us gay women get more rep in media (with tact), but i have never been a fan of anything that looks sus like cheap pandering which is always more about commercial buzz than actually boosting minority representation, even worse when its done as a one-off joke in a special or movie and then never brought up again...which i hope is not gonna be the case

anyway i always felt it was better to just create a new addition to the cast that breathes new life into established ones through interaction, which Rugrats has already successfully done with Kimi and Susie

rehashing old characters is the lazy way out and just an admission by writers that making new likeable characters is too hard for them

Rugrats got stale eons ago. Of course it was time to edit backstories, otherwise there's nothing new to sell about it. A bunch of times when a creator in Hollywood swears up and down " oh yeah we changed this now because it was always what we originally intended, we just didn't go that way in the first place due to reasons " it's complete bullshit. Like that scenario can happen, but it's no where near as common as said creators want you to believe. It's often a very easy excuse to change the series formula to resell it under the lie that it was always secretly canon.

In this case, this just looks like a mediocre change by marketing in hopes of sparking a little free publicity points. Not exactly a rarity in today's commercialized media...

I don't care if they make any of the characters gay. I do have an issue with the mentality that sexuality "obviously" presents itself in certain ways. Particularly since, at the time of Rugrats creation, that would have shown up in obviously toxic ways (a boy playing with dolls instead of action figures??) But maybe there were more obvious hints that I missed in the original show run. It's not like I've seen it in years

Like most people I was a wee lad when I last watched Rugrats, and never cared about the show after I entered middle school. So the idea that anyone was a gay icon for some people would never occur to me.

All the same, no reason for this to bother anyone. It's Rugrats for a new generation, so let them do what they want to make it different.

He's probably not an entity in the show. This is basically a reboot, and doesn't have any continuity with the show. Susie has also been aged down a year, presumably to be one of the babies.

Presumably they wanted a POC to be part of the main crew and Susie as she was would only show up every few episodes.

Personally I think the more interesting direction would see the show focus on the children of the original characters since etheyd all be in their early 30s now, but adaptions of older media have always had changes like this. It's not like it changes anything from the older series and we're certainly not the target audience anyway.

Why does her not being feminine mean she's "Queer coded" though? This just seems to be saying that if you break the stereotypes you're now actually probably just secretly gay. Isn't that sort of reductive?

I have no issue with her being a lesbian now but I do agree. It's pretty harmful to claim that a woman in a loving marriage (one where the husband also exhibited traditionally "feminine" traits) is secretly gay just because she exhibits traits that people think are masculine.

Butch women can be straight and gay just like more feminine men can be straight or gay.

Okay, but why does she have to be a strong single mother, though? We already have struggling-single-parent representation through Chas. Why did they feel the need to completely rework the character? I get the whole thing about having LGBT representation...but in that case, they could have at least given her a wife/girlfriend based on the personality of Howard to keep the dynamic. It's like they just randomly decided they didn't want Howard/Howardette around at all. That's weird and disappointing.

I find it weirder that so many people are acting like there's massive outrage against this. People heard about a change with the characters and voiced some disapproval. Why is that weird? Is everyone just supposed to accept everything, or have no opinions at all? Call me when the writers start getting death threats..
