I think the conventional wisdom is now (and how I pretty much operate) is that anybody at any time for any reason is able to define their gender as whatever they want. This obviously can be a huge problem when it comes to gender affirming care and young teens who we generally don't expect to be able to trust to make life altering judgements but that's a different discussion.

The current rules are women and men mean specifically gender identity, so people are allowed to define that for themselves at will. What people generally used to mean by gender now refers to "biological sex". And the current use of gender more refers to how somebody presents/identifies in the world at any given moment.

Most of reasonable society seems to be settling on "you get to pick your name, you get to pick your pronouns, but xim xer is stupid and we all always knew that, finally gender neutral pronouns are also ok to use."

If you are talking about me, I don't have you ignored. I don't like to ignore people, but I do have different tags on people based on how likely I think they would engage in good faith discussion, and that influences how often I respond to them.
