Preferences are fine, the guy is an asshole though I think is the issue. It was 100% possible to politely decline and back out of the situation, he could've even put himself on the line and done the "Dunno, nothing wrong with it but I don't think I'm the guy for the job" kinda mentality. Joe is very VERY defensive of freedom of speech, not hate speech. These words were calculated though and when he was asked not to talk to her cause he might hurt her feels he didn't deny that.

Somebody saying hate speech doesn't count when somebody is angry seems an awful lot like being defensive of hate speech.

I didn't say it doesn't count. I think it was hurtful and inappropriate and he should have apologized for it.

What I was saying was that by virtue of him saying it that did not necessarily make him transphobic. You could certainly say he was acting transphobic at the time. But for example one of my friends who is extremely hyper tolerant of all people, was quite upset at a female coworker for their awful behavior, and so he did call her a c word when talking to me about his frustration. I do not infer that he is a misogynist as a result though. His word choice was a function of anger.

I could totally believe an angry non transphobic person misgendering twice in an angry tweet particularly if they came on set and were scolded in any way for not consenting, particularly if the woman in question had a penis.

If you operate under the belief that a single act of transphobia makes you a transphobe, that a single act of racism makes you a racist, or that any single act of bigotry makes you a bigot, then yes under those rules this person would be a transphobe.

So a nice sweet old black man comes to your business establishment, 35 years ago when they were very poor they stole and got arrested. They want to apply for a job to make a little extra cash to help take care of his wife. You look at their resume and record and say "oh, I see you're a fucking criminal".

I can understand that mindset, though I don't think it's useful, particularly in how you contextualize other people. I did a couple plays in grade school, that doesn't make me an "actor", I've done open mic comedy, that doesn't makes me a "comedian".

Usually labels for people represent elements of a person's identity and not just a label of "something they did one time."

I don't necessarily agree with his language or way he went about informing her, but to be blacklisted or lose jobs over it is dumb. Don't ambush him, then get mad when he may not agree with you/when he gets mad about it, and then post his private message out for everyone to see.

He acknowledges she exists but says that she was "a dude" and not "a girl". That's misgendering. I don't know what you think "dude" and "girl" are if they aren't the labels that the definition of misgendering is referring to.
