The first shot is like nothing.

The second shot can knock you on your ass though.
Mine was the opposite, although knock you on your ass would be an exaggeration. Fatigue the day after first dose, no side effects at all from second.

lol anyone attempting to give Trump the slightest amount of credit for the vaccine rollout.

His administration didn't even keep record of how many vaccines were ordered and where they were sent.

My Dad actually does give Trump credit despite being very against him.

Still doesn't change how poorly he handled the pandemic though.

Both of my Moderna doses knocked me on my ass. Second dose more-so though.

I'm still the only person among my family/friends/coworkers that had bad side effects from either dose. And mine was only bad for a day.

Took Pfizer.

I had side effects from both doses. Lot of fatigue + headaches + body aches.

Second dose was much worse. Lost a night of sleep from it actually.

Both disappeared after that first day though.

Still waiting for my second Pfizer shot but I didn't even get a sore arm from the first one. No side effects at all.

What region are you in? Here they just opened it up to 18+.

For a country with no vaccine producing capabilities Canada did quite well. It's unfair to compare us to the richest nation in the world
Algoma region. We "opened up" to 18+ today but there are no scheduled clinics with open bookings, and all the clinics up to mid June are full. I suspect they only went from 50+ yesterday to 18+ today because a lot of people that were not eligible went ahead and booked appointments for the last available slots yesterday (I know 5-6 people personally that did this) and rather than cancel those and cause a shitstorm they just lowered the requirements.

we still haven't heard what region of canada you're in because in most places this is definitely not the case

The reason we are about to surpass the USA is because we put a 16 week gap between first/second doses of the MRNA vaccines, which exceeded the original guidelines but seems to have no impact on efficacy (although some results out of the UK say 16 weeks might actually be more effective at promoting a response than 3 weeks). Canada put all their eggs in the "lets get the first dose out" basket. If you look at total doses administered per capita, or % of population fully vaccinated, the US/UK/Israel/etc completely blow us out of the water because our federal government is grossly incompetent.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought those results were for AZ? I wouldn't assume that generalizes to the mRNA vaccines (though maybe there's more data for those that I'm not aware of)

Also, my mother works at our hospital and got her first dose back in March. Apparently we have been so hurting for supplies, that hospitals in Michigan have started donating doses to our frontline staff getting fully vaccinated. On the plus side, our region going straight to 18+ means that whenever the next clinics open up, I can take the morning off and spend the entire time trying to get an appointment booked, rather than having to wait for them stepping down age limits. My worry is that the province being gung ho about vaccinating 12-17 year olds is going to pre-empt either my first or second dose. I need to travel internationally for work this fall and I can't commit to any project timelines because of vaccine uncertainty, and all my coworkers in Toronto/USA don't believe or understand how bad it is here.

Note that 16 weeks was the maximum time between doses - where I live, it looks like it'll be around 8 weeks for most folks.

Yeah, I'm sure that the 16 weeks will be pulled back once the rush for first doses is done purely owing to the fact that we have way more supply coming in through June/July than we had in March/April. Besides my obvious job concerns, I just want to get back to some semblance of normalcy, and let my 2 year old actually get some socialization, which he's been sorely lacking over the pandemic.

Now if only we could get enough of the population to take the vaccine so we can get actual herd immunity!

Concerned we won't get there, which makes me feel bad with people who literally can't take it due to immune system problems

Ehhh, once people realize that they will need proof of vaccination to go anywhere, you should see that number go up. The only people that will holdout are the most mentally deficient of the QAnon/general government conspiracy crowd, and the wingnut hippy "naturalist" morons. Basically if you don't live in the deep south, or in the inner city ghetto, you're probably in an area that will be sufficiently herd immune.

Yeah, even considering the United States may have a higher rate of vaccine hesitancy, the fact that over 10% of the population is confirmed to have gotten COVID likely helps them establish herd immunity regardless.

Well, managed to steal an appointment from some cancellations tomorrow. The public health unit has an API you can scrape and 200 slots became available before they announced publically. Managed to get my brother a couple cousins and some co-workers signed up before they filled up.

Pretty sad that you need to have the knowledge to look these things up in order to guarantee a booking, but at least me and my wife can get our shots and not have to worry about things for a while.

Except some states like Iowa have already said "vaccine passports" arent allowed and you cant limit going places based on vaccination status.

I expect many Republican states will do the same. Texas has already banned mask mandates, I'm sure vaccine mandates will be banned as well if they arent already.

Basically you should add rural to your list of places that will struggle to reach herd immunity.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. It does, thankfully, look like most colleges are gonna require the vaccine for the fall semester, and assuming Pfizer gets full approval this summer as expected I believe that should be on the same legal footing as all of the other required vaccines they already have (I also think any laws banning private companies from requiring proof of vaccination to enter would be overturned if challenged, though just the presence of such laws might be enough to stop companies from trying).

I never understood the weird American opinion that "vaccine passports" are somehow "bad". Half the countries in the world require proof of vaccination upon entry, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere with Yellow Fever. In any sane country, kids aren't allowed to attend schools if they aren't vaccinated.

Americans get all hot and bothered about having the personal freedom to be an idiot, but your right to be an idiot ends when your stupidity directly harms other people. This is one of the basic tenets of living in a society.

Well given the sheer mental deficiency of about half the world's population, maybe the Chinese government has something figured out here. I'd gladly give up my freedom to do stupid things that I would never voluntarily do if it stops morons from doing the same
