Have they lived up to the promise of exposing police misconduct

I think the body cams have failed sadly.

As long as the police can turn them off, remove the memory cards, or otherwise "lose" footage, they're totally useless.

They've helped, but there are far too few consequences for compromising their footage and preventing them from helping, so there's still plenty of room to improve accountability.

They've exposed a lot of police misconduct (though not enough) but have also highlighted how immune police are to consequences.

It doesn't matter how much video footage we have if the cops aren't punished regardless.

when turned back on, it has a recording of the past couple minutes.

if they can't turn them off, then going to the bathroom would be even more problematic

Remember, if you do not see the red flashing light, the camera is turned off.

Yes, they have.

Because every time they are turned off, you know the misconduct was PREMEDITATED.

Sadly the courts haven't figured that out.

Turning off the body cam during an incident should automatically add premeditated to any charge an officer receives.

Not really. What seems to be exposing things is the fact that almost everyone has a camera in their pocket these days.

Often the police turn their cameras off, turn them on after an incident has already occurred, or the department withholds the footage for an extended period of time.

We see actual movement and transparency regarding an incident after cell phone footage of it goes viral.

You look EXTREMELY immature when you announce that you're about to ignore someone. No one cares, including the person about to be ignored. Just FYI.

oh well its not like the footage gets live-streamed to the public or anything and its not like all body cam footage is being reviewed, its only when sketchy shit goes down

I think it would be pretty clear from the context of the video when they're going to the bathroom.

To answer the question, yes. But not in the way intended. Pretty much anytime there are accusations of misconduct, the body cams are turned off. Or footage is cut. Or withheld entirely. All that in itself does a very good job of exposing misconduct.

There are a handful of charming incidents where a cop improperly disables his body camera and then films himself doing blatantly illegal shit
