Oh, people were anti-fantasy when LotR first came out.
Why should you care about things that aren't real? You should be paying attention to real things.

They both glorify magic, which is Satan's plaything. And LotR literally has a huge backstory that's mostly ripping off Catholicism and perverting it (the Valar are angels and arguably false gods, Illuvatar is supposed to be the literal god of the Bible, etc).

not sure of this, but I strongly suspect that extreme-religion's blacklisting of magical themed anything is for the _opposite_ reasons that they claim: the contrast between a world where magic is real and the real world where it isn't is pretty huge. eg: in D&D, if I swear a false oath, I get struck by lightning, on the spot, INDOORS.

IRL there is no supernatural, and it takes brainwashing, manipulation, anti-educational practices, and coercion to keep supernatural beliefs alive. in fiction, where it can be real, a lightning bolt to the face or regenerating physical damage before your eyes complete with shiny blue sparkles makes it plain for all to see (and it would actually be disbelieving in magic that would require credulity and dishonesty to maintain).

Don't forget that Melkor was a Valar who rebelled against Illuvatar out of pride and who took a portion of the Maiar with him.

Well, the theory is that it makes you more receptive to evil spirits. Kind of like how vegetarianism (which is also listed) makes you more vulnerable because your iron levels are lower and iron repels demons.

It also suggests that the Devil essentially helped create the physical world (and, in fact, may have had the strongest hand in that creation other than God himself), which leans more Gnostic than Catholic, and would technically be heretical to most modern Christian faiths.

Not to mention the fact that simply being Catholic might make something more objectionable to a lot of Fundamentalists, because a lot of Protestant denominations act like the Pope is pretty much the Devil himself.

Well, the masons date back to about 3200 bce, but i'm not sure when you count the start of Christianity since it can be as early as the death of Paul or as late as the Council of Nicea

It's worth noting that most scholars believe that Baphomet is just a corruption of Muhammad, so the implied accusation against the Templars was basically that they'd become closet Muslims from all their interactions with the enemy in the Holy Land.

God was unimpressed with Kain's offering of vegetables.

Romans
One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables.

Daniel
