Because the run on Pokemon cards is so bad right now that people are camping out for days waiting for restocks, then getting into violent fights with each other. The Pokemon Company themselves are distributing cards by lotto system now, that's how bad the shortage is. The demand has never been higher, and supply has never been lower. And the big retailers don't want to deal with a product that volatile that will cause one of their stores to be shot up.

Mostly because a lot of people stuck at home during the pandemic with nothing better to do realized there was money to be made selling Pokemon cards (specifically the ones that came with happy meals at one point in the past year, though obviously it's expanded to be more general), which exploded into a crazy scalping scene.

Becuase it's an investment with a quick turn around. If you can snatch up a booster box for $120, go home and sell it online for $650 within minutes of putting the listing up, why wouldn't you? And the supply chain disruptions coupled with people with nothing to do figuring "well I can make money on Pokemon cards" and this was only fueled by streamers and youtubers like Logan Paul, Arin Hanson and aDrive doing the same thing.

Some people are even placing bets on livestreams of what cards will be in the packs and some popular streamers are selling the fucking NFTs of their pack opening videos for hundreds of dollars

the very fabric of reality is unraveling

Pokemon has always had latent popularity, but I would say that Logan Paul's booster box video put the hype on to the next level.

Eh, Jake is a pretty bad copy of Logan. I always feel like he is clout chasing after his brother and does not stand on his own.

But eh, at least they are getting people interested in boxing again. Gosh knows, no one has cared about the sport since UFC entered the picture. Although, they may as well call it the YouTuber Fight League now

What about the ones that come in boxes of cereal? I was at my mom's house the other day and she had a box of Cocoa Puffs that had a three card booster pack in it (I didn't even know they still did cereal box prizes!). I took the cards and assumed they weren't worth much, but if the Pokemon card market is booming rn, I wanna make some $$$.

That, I don't know. I just know that happy meals were sold out across the country because people were literally scalping them for the cards inside.

The best answer is if you're willing to fight over cards at a Target that may have a higher than cost resale value, it's time to get a job, perhaps one in underground fight rings, since then you'll at least be paid for fighting idiotically.
