Finished day 1 in Chapter 2 of Trails to Azure. I figured we'd be diving head first into Randy's past in this game, and that scene with Sigmund didn't disappoint.

Also I enjoyed the scene between Olivert and Mueller where they're clearly talking about Thors. They're also already laying the groundwork for the Civil War, huh.

The Office (British version) Season 1 complete!

What a bizarre episode. It doesn't feel like David's or Tim's actions here made much sense, but maybe that's just me.

i guess tim's actions in that episode are kind of weird (why does he accept the promotion offer when it's clear that he hates his job?) but what didn't you get about david's actions? if you thought he would reject jennifer's offer, you're taking him for a far more sympathetic character than he actually is >_>

No, I fully expected him to accept the offer. I just didn't get why he deliberately failed his physical to get out of taking the job. I guess he wants to look like a hero to his employees, but it's still strange to me.

uh, i haven't seen the episode in ages so maybe i should watch it again, but i thought the point was that david wanted to pass the physical test but just failed (like malcolm said). the "i deliberately failed the test!" thing was just a bullshit story david made up to seem like the hero.

btw, i like how malcolm just disappears in season 2 with no explanation. david obviously fired him because he was being a pain in the ass to him all through season 1!

13 Sentinels: Ogata, Minami, Takamiya, Sekigahara, and Hijiyama

Ogata: Back to the loop and escaping is... remarkably straight-forward. It just put NPC Okino back in so we could leave that way again. Weird, I had picked up a Thought Cloud term from the bullies a while back and that... never became needed for any ending route. I guess the only purpose it had was to allow you to talk them down instead of being an instant reset if you walked that way after the first time or two. That's Ogata's story cleared.

Minami: Over to 2105 for more investigation. We eavesdrop on Gouto and smol!Morimura and while Morimura blames her memory lapses on being transplanted into Chihiro and having the brain of a child I wonder if that would be foreshadowing that she's just simulated by UC just I already know that from playing through Fuyusaka's story. Or maybe it's something unrelated that I'll see on Gouto's story. Or she's right about her explanation. Either way, Izumi figured out how to hack into the automated factory two loops ago. Once they leave, BJ, with some help from Minami, discovers Sentinel 17 is in orbit. Huuuh... I assumed we were on that satellite the whole time but maybe BJ's theory we're on the new planet is right. Will revisit this a bit later. Also we get trapped in 2025 by Shinonome for a second but after doing Takamiya's section below we proceed right to Minami's ending which is her becoming the pilot of Sentinel 17 and BJ recovering the logs but at the cost of his life. rip little guy.

Takamiya: Pretty short section where we go to check on Sekigahara to find him in bad shape, but BJ somehow got away from Shinonome and back to him and they point Takamiya to 2025 where we shoot a bunch of androids to save Minami. Since technically I did this ending before Minami's by necessity (just I rolled both of Minami's trips into the above section) this surprised me by being the first character ending that didn't flash-forward to the final battle like Fuyusaka and Ogata. But then Minami's didn't seem to either so I guess that was just a coincidence my first two endings did.

Sekigahara - Now here's some juicy info. Sekigahara tries to find Minami, finds Takamiya instead, but Takamiya was intentionally luring him over to Minami anyway, just presumably in a place with more privacy. She reveals that the SIU/Ida made her give Sekigahara a false message with that drone at the beginning of the story and BJ shows the real one - first further confirmation that it was 2188 Gouto who hired Sekigahara to kill Morimura but then an even juicier flashback where Sekigahara recalls meeting Ida in 2025 and we get the closest to a true explanation of what's going on here from him and... it matches up with a fair number of my previous ideas! It sounds very much like my idea that each time period is its own district and that it's not REALLY time travel when you shift between them is on the right track. Once the Deimos control each district the world resets and each district is created from 16 years before the present-game dates. Ida claims we're supposed to reach 2188 but the Deimos invasions prevent that. He then recruits Sekigahara to his side of stopping Morimura and Operation Aegis because that would end the possibility of looping with the promise he can save him and Shinonome. While I do trust Ida on his explanation of loops the rest of it is a bit sus because he's very clearly and obviously manipulating Sekigahara here who is so desperate he just rolls with it and agrees to betray BJ!Miura and retrieve the data logs for Ida.

Hijiyama: Even more juicy info here when we stumble upon another 2188 log where it's revealed there was a dispute on the space station between Okino who wanted to direct their remaining power to life support for the people on the station and Ogata who wanted the power to go to Project Ark. Izumi ends up shooting and killing Okino and Ogata apparently kills at least Ogata and maybe Izumi in retaliation. The data files say seven people died and Ogata was one of them at least. Shinonome and Ida are mentioned by Ogata to have survived. Another branch leads us to Okino taking Hijiyama to the UFO and giving a bit more detail on how the Control Key works. The D-Code just has to have a commander and contact to Universal Control/the UFO mainframe, the automated factories in 2105, and - Okino suspects - the satellite. The big shock to me though was this all revealed, along with the other branches in this session for Hijiyama, how in the dark Okino is on a lot of the fundamental mysteries. I had been assuming from near the start that he was actually one of, if not the most, informed on the reality of the situation perhaps rivaled only by Ida, Morimura, and 426/Izumi, but this showed he's still in the midst of figuring it out, and arguably behind a few of the other cast members...

Overall: So now my primary question is where exactly is everyone. I assumed they were on the interstellar satellite thing because IIRC the data file gives dimensions for it that basically match the buried UFO - 30 km diameter, etc. and that the cast thinking the UFO is a separate thing is because they are, Amiguchi/Takamiya-excepted unaware that the outside world is an illusion and they're actually in a 30km cage. But BJ seems to make it pretty clear that Sentinel 17 is on an artificial satellite 500 km above them so that probably rules that out unless there's some massive generation ship thing enclosing everything else here (there's mention about a prospective planet/system 12 light years away in a scene somewhere earlier so I can't TRULY rule this out yet.) So for now I'm going to assume the Satellite arrived at whatever planet it was meant to terraform, detached part of itself to form the buried UFO/base (hence why the dimensions still match) while the rest of it stays in orbit (almost certainly Sector 0.) Not sure though.

There's also the matter of the Project Ark dispute, the factions involved, and the matter of what the other sectors are (I'm still placing my bet on shifting being more physical transportation than temporal but I have many questions still whose answers could still debunk that idea.)

In any event, next up will be Miura and I'm pretty sure that will end up lifting a lock on Sekigahara but after that more fighting I believe.

13 Sentinels: Miura, Sekigahara, Still More Fighting

Miura: Yes! My "this isn't time travel" theory vindicated in full! Though I didn't have it down as "the survivors of humanity disagreed on where best to restart human civilization so they just went "fuck it" and made 5 different sectors to cover all their bases.

Sekigahara: This was the star of the session. Sekigahara goes to raid the SIU once Takamiya tells him where it is and it turns out Shinonome did kill Ida when she shot him but he was a step ahead and backed himself up to an android (and Sector 0 too) just in case. The flashback to reveal the real truth of what happened right before Sekigahara woke up in the alley though was the peak. Looks like Sekigahara had elected to team up with Morimura instead of following Ida's orders and he got her to reveal that the loop system isn't infinite and they're on their last try right now. Further, we see the 2188 log where 2188!Sekigahara confronts 2188!Morimura with the fact that her fundraising for Project Ark led directly to the downfall of humanity by spreading nanomachines onto the black market. He also anticipated being locked down and planted a bomb at the power generator to ensure the locks would release and he could kill her and fulfill the job. ...Well guess that answers why there was a power crisis up there that led to the shootout that kill 2188 Okino and most everyone else... "whoops." Finally it wraps up with Chibimura arriving on the scene to be the real killer of Morimura while Sekigahara passes out from DD-426. Ida was legit shook by all this and ends up shot and killed as a result.

Battles (2-6 through 2-10): The big story reveal here was Inaba's location - the satellite. Also that her plan ran into a hiccup with the satellite's orbit taking her out of comms range and forcing the group to hold out against the Deimos for over 14 additional hours. There's also an exchange a mission or two earlier that caught my interest where Kisaragi is like "How do you know this shit Juro, sure you're not Izumi?" and he says he isn't but that he knows him and what they're up against... ...did I peg Izumi/426 wrong and he's involved in the Deimos somehow?

Overall: I'll split this to two subjects again. First will be 2188. Okay, so my current working theory is about as follows. Project Ark was probably an interstellar colonization project that got repurposed into recolonizing Earth after Morimura accidentally caused the nanomachine apocalypse. The only survivors of humanity were up on that station. I wanted to say it was the 15 compatible but I think Morimura said there were only 10? Either way, Sekigahara kills her because he's a professional and also because he's understandably pissed that she basically killed humanity. Unfortunately, the bomb he set off to ensure he succeeded crippled the power supply to the station which led to the conflict between Okino and Ogata over where to direct what they had left. It sounds like most of the crew died as a result of the shootout. The only semi-confirmed survivors are Shinonome and Ida but I'm not entirely sure this matters TOO much. Project Ark then sets about to "restore" humanity to Earth by way of its recolonization project. Shinonome, either around this time, or possibly before, figures out that actually they're all that's left of humanity (whether this is the 10-15 before shit went down or after when that number might literally be 2 is again likely irrelevant) and decides "fuck it this is hopeless" and sabotages the project so the terraforming machines act like kaiju (because Okino is a lazy programmer and didn't want to write the code so he lifted it from a video game lmao) and force it to loop endlessly until the system can no longer handle the strain which is where we're at now. The Morimura in the Sectors eventually figures this all out and decides Shinonome's conclusion was wrong and even if it is bleak beyond belief, better that the 15 compatibles at least get a shot in the outside world by enacting Project Aegis because the alternative is just death. I THOUGHT that was Izumi/426's take too but idk now.

The second topic is WHERE is this taking place. Or rather is it a virtual world or physical? They're clearly on Earth because the satellite is orbiting it still and there's enough tangential references from Morimura, etc. to basically confirm that. I... I think it's a virtual world though because there's emphasis put on "the satellite is orbiting the REAL world" plus the whole thing where Universal Control just vanishes 1.2 million people in an instant... that's... that's not normal! So I'm thinking the project got repurposed into SimCity where the intent was to have each Sector play to 2188 and see who did best and use that as the model... but the sabotage screwed that up. Shifting is no longer not just time travel but not even physical travel where the system dumps you into a different game scenario. They're on the last loop because the system is running out of memory and either will crash or needs to reformat. On the pro-physical world side we have the fact that it's stressed that Sector 0 takes up no space which 100% sounds virtual so it'd come off as redundant to stress that only to go "actually all sectors are virtual" though I suppose it wouldn't be redundant from the perspective of the characters in-universe so maybe...

I guess as a bonus third topic is the identity of Inaba. If she's up on the satellite then it follows she's one of the survivors or an AI. If a survivor then... a repentant Shinonome who lost access and has to work indirectly like this to fix things? If an AI this opens it up a bit more including that she's her own character. That said, if it is a survivor it almost has to be that everything else is a virtual world because there's simply been too many loops and too much time would have passed whereas a virtual world could be running at like 5000x speed or whatever. An AI would allow either possibility.

Anyway, that just lifted locks on Kurabe, Shinonome, Amiguchi, and Kisaragi. Additionally, I think playing through those will lift the locks on Yakushiji, Gouto, and Hijiyama which would be everyone not story cleared. Definitely think I'm gonig to Kurabe's story next after that is a bit uncertain (probably Yakushiji because I need Fluffy answers) but yeah.

I worked out Okino but I hadn't ruled out Tamao being a clone of Shinonome (or vice versa) because they're kinda similar looking and it's mentioned somewhere that among the memory transplant favors being carried out was Shinonome and I thought maybe it was an attempt to transplant Tamao into her like Morimura originally intended for Fuyusaka.

If Tamao is one though she immediately jumps to suspect #1 for Inaba.

Well, she was my default "if no one else readily makes themselves clear as a compatible" choice for the last one.

Also, thinking on it some more, dark horse for Inaba is Kisaragi because despite looking nothing like her (to me at least), we know Kisaragi is a singer so it fits with the idol thing. Also IIRC the "other" Kisaragi she accidentally contacted in the UFO mentioned being like nowhere on the map.

13 Sentinels: Kurabe, Yakushiji, Shinonome, Amiguchi, Kisaragi, and Gouto

Kurabe: Finally some payoff for Okino standing at the vending machines at various points in the story before. We chase him down and get captured off-screen like Ogata and see a memory of a previous loop with Okino and Izumi seeing 426 while imprisoned. Okino then gains control of 426 and gets him to become visible and to explain what he's up to - haha since 2188 Okino screwed them over by lifting code from a video game, 426's plan is to fight fire with fire by unlocking the rest of the game mechanics so they can fight back with literal level and power-ups. Then when he's done chatting with them, Yakushiji breaks them out and shoots Okino (and Hijiyama again) in the process.

Yakushiji: The previous bit all but confirmed Fluffy = 426 but still this is the story to go to for Fluffy info so it was my next stop. We get Yakushiji's side of the rescue, with Fluffy making an emergency request to her since Kurabe got captured. Unfortunately for Yakushiji, Kurabe informs her that the Juro Izumi whose memories he's been getting is not hers but the one prior which causes her to lose hope. Wandering over to Ayame Park she finds Chibimura who continues to be amazing by just casually smiling and shifting from "talk you might expect from the girl she looks like" to "I know what you did" and pulls a gun on her. Chibimura and Gouto are NOT happy about the upgraded code Yakushiji has been shooting into people and think the objective is for Fluffy to gain control of the kaiju AND Sentinels... but I think they have him pegged wrong. Still, Yakushiji doesn't take this well either and returns to get answers out of Fluffy and to start shooting him. It culminates in a mental breakdown where she shoots herself and Fluffy tells the unconscious Yakushiji that he really was trying to help her but things went off the rails and while that's no excuse he's sorry he couldn't meet her expectations. But then after she wakes up Kurabe is all "my bad, actually I had this wrong I do have your Juro's memories lol" dammit Kurabe we could have avoided a lot of that grief!

Shinonome: Back over with Shinonome she vaguely recalls the repressed memories of learning Ida's motivations but not very well, so she wants to head back to 2105 to reconfirm. She doubts Morimura's explanation that they've been locked out of the Gates and tries it out for herself only for Morimura to tell her that yeah, she's the one who locked them down. Shinonome starts throwing her grievances at Morimura only for Morimura to fire back that Shinonome's whole search has been pointless because Shinonome is the one who infected the Sentinels with DD-426 and thus the culprit she's been hunting for this whole time. Shinonome denies it, and I can hardly blame her given all the sus activity Morimura has been involved in but Gouto arrives to corroborate this account and says he's told her the same a few times but each time she represses the memory. This whole time they've been letting her wander around hoping she'll do something to recall the memory because DD-426 is password protected and only she knows the password. Shinonome DOES remember Ida telling her to install DD-426 billing it as an "upgrade" but there's no note of a password here, just that she chose to install it to Sekigahara's Sentinel instead of hers. The stress of all this causes her to collapse and when she awakens her memory deterioration has reached the final stage and she's forgotten everything, including her name and can only recall how to operate the Sentinel... and Ida. ...Holy crap ending here is a major downer ending for her story because the only personal memories she retained are her crush on Ida not knowing how much of an evil monster he's been. God, I want to give her a hug. I'm hoping against hope she remembers some of her old life by the end somehow but man.

Amiguchi: Inaba sends an SOS to Amiguchi because Ida has found her and decided to delete her. Amiguchi is stuck on how to help but Shinonome breaks in conveniently on the same mission (well not exactly but their goals align.) He takes her to the Outer Walls and they give chase to the 2025 UFO where Takamiya is held hostage for her ID. Ida succeeds in turning off Sentinel 16/Inaba but makes the mistake of declaring his love for Kisaragi in front of Shinonome. Having realized this must be the immediate before to the "Shinonome shoots and kills Ida" event I had my eye on her reactions to everything he said. As expected, Shinonome forcibly warps Ida and Takamiya out... but leaves Amiguchi and the SIU there lol. They spend the next few hours trying to figure out the terminal and LOL at the one SIU guy telling the other to chill because Amiguchi is trying his best. My man is right here, he's your only hope. ...Until Minami and BJ warp in and make things super awkward! LOOOOOL at this being Amiguchi's story ending what a cliffhanger to literally leave it there.

Kisaragi: This turns out to more or less be a continuation. The first part has Miwako back but her memories altered to forget about having been stranded in 2025. So, I guess Universal Control didn't send her back as the one non-compatible of that group and instead just kind of reset her NPC with fake memories rather than deal with all that. We also see the "real" version of Ogata's dream loop from Kisaragi here where she's supremely unsatisfied with all this and wants to investigate Universal Control. She stumbles on Okino and blackmails him into helping her... and luckily Okino's response to this isn't to have Hijiyama knock her out and hook her up to the headgear machine. They then teleport over to 2025 to join the festivities from Amiguchi's part... only the SIU guys just disappeared for reasons? UC reset them too? The heck happened there? Anyway, the gang's all here and BJ recruits Okino into the "save Inaba" plan. Kisaragi reactivates the Sentinel and she explains a bit about herself and says her plan is to modify Universal Control as she alluded to back in the battle portion of the game. Doesn't give details though.

Gouto: This unlocks Gouto finally and oh my god this is great. The sheer audacity of Chibimura "helping" him investigate Morimura's murder when we know she's the culprit. Fluffy is still the GOAT but Chibimura is soaring up the ranks of next most hilarious audacious troll. Still, Gouto is detail-oriented enough to realize that Chibimura isn't remembering things that Morimura should and connects the dots that they aren't the same person. He instead accuses her of being the original 2188 Morimura and it looks like he's right. Huh. Well this is an interesting development.

Stopped there. Should only be Gouto and Hijiyama left. Hijiyama is under a lock related to Gouto so we will continue with him next time. Ah, crap, hit the character limit at the very end here, will split into two posts.

Overall: I feel like most of the pieces are in place now. A good number of my early theories were either on the mark or fairly close but others were misses. It appears we are NOT at Earth but genuinely at a new planet. Fluffy also says millions of years have passed so I guess Project Ark really did travel to that system 12 light years away alluded to way back when. I think the only major question left is why the loop system is different this time. I theorized that the system is just breaking down due to something like memory limitations and that could still be it but it could also be mechanical failure if it's been this long or even an actual programmed limit. A few seemingly minor details on the exact events as well but most of the questions are answered I think.

Huh, I was not expecting a Pirates of the Caribbean game made by Rare with a "Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor" type rebranding. I don't really like the graphical style (feels like an N64 Rare game), but it's got legit PotC music.

of course it's only on XBox and PC so it's unlikely I'll play it anyway but the concept intrigues me despite my misgivings

Is Sea of Thieves any good now? I know it had a rough start when it came out and was getting better but I haven't heard much about it in years until that trailer.

13 Sentinels: Hijiyama, Gouto, Still Even More Fighting

Technically there was a bit of jumping around here such that it was like: Gouto -> 3-1 to 3-5 -> Gouto -> Hijiyama -> Gouto -> More fighting but for the sake of brevity I'll consolidate each bit.

Hijiyama: Okino takes Hijiyama back to the UFO presumably to talk to Inaba but it never happens due to an android ambush. Okino can temporarily stop them because they respond to his voice somewhat but not forever. He runs into the same "need to operate it from far away" issue that past!Okino did and Hijiyama gets sent back alone. He runs off to find another shifter and eventually tracks down Minami by accident. BJ tell him Okino is in critical condition and he'll get him back but they arrive too late and Okino dies. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop because obviously he's around in the final battle. I was expecting he had an android backup that he was going to point Hijiyama to in his letter but nope, he gives him his Sentinel and it turns out it IS a virtual world and in reality the 15 are inside incubation pods in the Sentinels... Matrix style I assume. Huh, and honestly I was leaning back towards it being a physical world when Okino revealed this.

Gouto: Okay, so Gouto's story is pretty different from the others in that it's basically him unraveling the mystery to Chibimura (and the occasional flashforward showing some of Chibimura's actions during the final battle that we've previously only seen her mention over comms in Destruction Mode) but damn if I didn't enjoy it. Picking up where we left off with Gouto saying Chibimura isn't the Morimura they've known all this time but the 2188 Professor he continues by accusing her of wanting the group to fail here in order to loop another time. He follows this up outlining that her plan was to have her memories override Fuyusaka when she turned 18 and to also have Ogata's father (who is revealed to be the actual mastermind behind the nanomachine apocalypse by ordering Morimura to take the actions she did that caused it) overwrite Ogata. Only once she became Chibimura she realized the kaiju attacks had wildly derailed the plan and had to be solved first. She used her admin ID to stop any future attacks but the already produced kaiju would still overrun this cycle but that suits her just fine. Gouto finishes this by accusing her of the murder of Morimura and she responds by trying to shoot him only made the rookie mistake of forgetting she had Gouto get her the gun and he installed safeties into it whoops.

He then presses her on her motives for transplanting her own memories and she explains there needs to be a leader or else the survivors will descend into the same in-fighting that ruined the colony. Gouto then decides to make a bet with her - if they can beat the kaiju invasion they'll have proved they've passed this test of character that Chibimura was worried about. They'll leave a single terminal up in exchange for her no longer sabotaging the operation and so that if they lose their end, the loop will recur as she wanted. In the final scene we flashforward to a point ahead of where my Destruction Mode is where they're down to 3 terminals and Gouto requests she get them in contact with Inaba because he knows she can bypass the horizon issue having done it before. No leverage, just a favor so they at least have a chance. She relents and states she can do it but it'll be a one-shot limited time deal because doing so will cause the relay satellites used for it to fall out of stable orbit and if they can't finish their plan before they crash that's it.

And that's 100% for Remembrance Mode!

Battle: Cleared 3-1 through 3-7. Also since I apparently unlocked all the locked Mystery Files my Mystery Points are being converted into tons of meta-chips from now on so I've been going wild with upgrades lol.

Overall: Okay, so the big, outstanding issue I see here is the clear incompatibility between Chibimura wanting to loop one more time and seeming confident it would happen against Morimura and Inaba suggesting that's not possible and this loop is different and would be the last one if not EVER then at least of its kind. I'm inclined to believe the latter because it seems more narratively appropriate and also Inaba is probably the most informed about the situation given she's been chilling up on the colony. Nevertheless, I'm a bit curious then what Chibimura has overlooked that has caused her to have this mistaken belief. I suppose the second issue is how the sabotage happened now. We know from the log that 2188 Gouto was dead set on preventing Ogata's father from getting his way and reincarnating in the new, terraformed world. My theory there now is that Gouto went to Shinonome as one of the only survivors after the shootout and dispelled whatever illusions she had about the situation by telling her the truth and she then sabotaged the project with the kaiju invasions as outlined in that message she recorded. ...At least I think that's the best explanation that ties what information we have together.

Probably a good chance I can beat the game next time? Should just be battles I imagine. Analysis % seems weirdly low for how much I think I have left but maybe beating the game adds a whole bunch of stuff that will make up for that.

Yeah, the ending adds a lot. Not sure if you've been consistently S-ranking every battle and meeting all the battle criteria for the extra files, too.
