He's kinda dumb and cringe worthy and he was allegedly a dick to co workers (although even then the accusations are more that he was incompetent and socially awkward than anything else)

But in general I don't get it either

guy has given the internet hundreds of hours of free entertainment, brought joy to millions and inspired thousands

why hate that? Good for him

As a creator, his schtick kind of sucks, but it's certainly nothing to hate.

As a boss, he was just really stupid and careless, and refused to acknowledge his business practices as bullshit until it was far too late to turn around.

Personally, I think his content's okay

But he's ugly to look at, I don't like the way he talks, and he doesn't give himself enough headspace in his framing which makes me uncomfortable.

I honestly dont mind his content, but yeah, his stuff doesnt need to be 20+ minutes long. I dont really care about the skits or recreations of the subject matter. Just give me a 5-10 minute review.

Ill consume a show, movie, game, music, book, food or other product I enjoy regardless of what goes on behind the scenes - as long as s***ty behaviour doesnt emerge within the product or degrade the product. If an employee is a dick to their co-workers, thats not my business.

What I did dislike about the Nostalgia Critic is when Doug wanted to interrupt the review with a big-lipped alligator moment which makes this scene entirely pointless.

He would criticise the hell out of a movie for doing what he does in his own videos where the action viewers want to see screeches to a halt to focus on some unfunny skit featuring secondary characters we dont care about. Nothing against Malcolm and Tamera, but I watch the Nostalgia Critic for the reviews, not the skits.

I used to like him and some of the TGWTG/CA guys back in the day, but after a while, most of them just lost their appeal. Too many crossovers, corny skits, "memes"/running jokes, etc. I was actually rewatching some of his old videos last night and they were still enjoyable to me.

Speaking of all the BS the Walkers/Michaud would pull, some of the rumors got out way before they did the Change The Channel stuff, and some of the same people who made complaints in that used to defend, downplay, or outright deny some of the things happening behind the scenes. The whole site got a little too cult like. You'd get banned for even constructfully criticizing some of the producers there, and they'd go after people on youtube for making critical videos of them and using their footage while they'd defend stealing footage from shows/movies as fair use.

Pretty much my take. I only ever watched a few videos over a decade ago and that's how I felt. Kinda funny in some ways but not really. I'd give the vids a 4/10 and that's being generous.

Occasionally his gimmick is fun but I havent watched a new Nostalgia Critic since the Fox Kids retrospective.

Hes like the AVGN where all his best material is behind him and hes better just giving straight opinion pieces, but the money comes from the gimmick so itll never go away.

Yeah

His release schedule was more consistent and James Rolfe did close to 0 building his community while critic was super active

James Rolfe literally didn't even know the internet was mad about him over the Ghostbusters thing

during the early years. The Nostalgia Critic and the AVGN were the biggest reviewers around online for a while, as long as you were in the right circles.

That's when I had to stop watching.

I just never like his schtick.

I liked Lindsay Ellis, and then I pretty much followed Lindsay Ellis when she started doing her own thing. The end.

That's when I had to stop watching...that and the Demo Reel thing killed all his momentum.

I think it's unfair to say a review that points out flaws in something "isn't giving it a fair unbiased review!"

The idea that something has to be glowing with positives to be unbiased and fair is ridiculous.

I got this one.

- he hasn't changed his style or evolved since his 10 min YouTube days.
- he didn't share any revenue from the large community videos.
- that intro is fucking annoying and he hasn't changed it since his failed project forced him back to the nostalgia critic role.
- he and his brother covered up sexual harassment. Obscurist Lupa iirc was the person behind change the channel
- he refused to allow others on channel awesome add some extra sponsorships or whatnot saying if they want to break even , make more videos.
- Doug and his brother shut down all discussion that they don't agree with.
- He revealed Jew Warrio's disgusting past in order to deflect heat off of him. Jew Wario had already committed suicide. All this did was deflect some people into harassing his widow.
- he is Peggy Hill. He gets really loud and smug but then completely misses the point. Not for satirical reasons, just out of being sheltered. See the Wall video.
- all those skits that came from his failed project was brought along with his return. While I have no ill will towards the two people he works with, the skits editing and story are just filler and annoying. The only times they are funny is when one of those two show their acting chops and comedic timing to salvage a skit.
- that project I keep mentioning? Demo Reel. He thinks he is a movie director, even bought a studio. All it was was a rip off of Jack Black's Be Kind Rewind.

Oh. I guess I heard more about the actual guy than the character. But if the character is purposely unlikable without depth while reviewing things, that's not really my thing either. What else does he do?

Honestly, don't answer that. I don't really like his face either. So I doubt Ill be persuaded to look into him over the options I already use.

I do remember some cheating allegations hurting his reputation. And I always wondered why that was anyone's business. But I guess it was because the girl was also a youtuber, so you were kind of picking sides or something. I dunno.

I don't really care. He doesn't seem likable. Maybe one day his video will pop up on my algorithm and Ill decide to see how ignorant I am to his situation.

Yeah, I mean the "walking to work, playing space 2001, standing on a table and writing "I QUIT!" on your belly" thing predates the Nostalgia critic and was just Doug being an asshole.

The Critic is a character but he's pretty much just Doug without a filter.

Yeah, I noticed that's usually the case. The best way to dedicate to a character is to just play off real personality traits and turn them up to a humorous degree.

Even when reviewers aren't purposely being annoying, Im usually arguing against their take in my head. I don't want to argue in my head against a person just putting on a full fledged show lol

I like him. I think sometimes his humor can be forced/corny but when he's laid back and telling jokes, or builds jokes around a legit criticism, they're good. I don't like when he forces criticism for length or forcing skits.

I have a playlist of his "All the [blank]" which is like 10 hours long and I put it on to help me sleep sometimes. They're at the perfect line of being interesting and not interesting, I can tune in for like 3 minutes and hear him talk and then tune it out and then tune back in hours later and not miss anything. Really helped when I was recovering from surgery.

Tamara is a cutie too, she grew on me.

Dunno about Doug's personal relations to anyone (aside from occasionally arguing with his brother which kan reach off-putting levels), but most of the nightmare for everyone else involved seems to stem from this new boss.

I watched a whole video on that. It honestly seemed like that dude had some type of blackmail on him. Otherwise it made zero sense why they let him have such a powerful position while not contributing anything and constantly being a nuisance. It reeked of blackmail.

ive only seen his crossovers with avgn, including the tmnt movie review and the bebe's kids for SNES review. i watched them mainly because of avgn and less because of nostalgia critic. watchable but can't keep my attention.
