I usually start out browsing on Yahoo just to see what is going on in the world and then whenever I want more in-depth analysis I head over to either something like newyorktimes.com or legit videos on YouTube on the subject, or even browsing board 261 right here on this website

TheGuardian still has some obviously laughable opinion pieces, but I place them as quite objective overall. PBS is another good recommendation. I try to look things up and scan the takes from the 'mainstream' too. Just watch out for 'independent' news sources that are just as sensationalist if not moreso than the big players.

media companies only care about profits, like everyone else. So if you want accurate news you have to fact check everything through multiple sources. Otherwise they have no problem handing you a bag of dog shit just because youll accept it.

Don't limit yourself to one news source.

This is a little outdated (I'm willing to bet both CNN and OAN rank a lot lower now, at least), but still a decent source. I try to follow as many of these sources as possible (and more; there's a lot of fairly big sources not covered on this one). It's good to know what slant a source has and how factual they are. I follow the inaccurate stuff too to get an idea of what's going on in the fringes, but if you just want solid news sources, grab a few from the green box.

This, so very, very much.

But it's not a terrible idea to start with AP and Reuters directly (before their stories are filtered through everyone else's biases) as a good jumping-off point. Especially since most news sources you read/watch are just going to be rehashing the stories from AP and Reuters anyway. With the base story from them, you can do a bit of digging to fact-check.and verify.

ALWAYS remember that repetition doesn't always equal veracity, though. A dozen sites repeating the exact same version of a story might just be repeating ONE source's flawed story over and over. Knowing WHERE a story is coming from originally can be a huge help in knowing whether or not you should trust it.

Militant Marxist-Leninists are currently claiming this about the Uyghur camps in China. Not that the reeducation camps don't exist (pretty sure the Chinese government has acknowledged they exist), but they question the severity of it and if they're actually "concentration camps." They're saying the original claim all originates from one fundamentalist anti-Chinese far-right man named Adrian Zenz (and data from a study with laughably small sample size) and all subsequent reporting has just been parroting or rehashing him. Source:

https://thegrayzone.com/2019/12/21/china-detaining-millions-uyghurs-problems-claims-us-ngo-researcher/

Note: I don't agree with the implied conclusion here, regardless. I think any sort of forced culture erasure is deplorable, and I think defending actions like that just because you think those perpetrating it align with you politically/ideologically is ethically bankrupt.

That's what they're saying, but I don't think it's true. I really don't trust The Gray Zone, personally. I haven't done a deep dive yet, but I'm fairly certain evidence of the Uyghur camps stem from more than just Adrian Zenz.

My distrust of The Gray Zone comes from my distrust of Aaron Mate. He goes on long hyper-emotional tirades. I don't agree with his assessment of Douma as a 'false-flag operation'. He has grossly inflated the assessments of one real 'whistleblower' (one dissenting opinion among dozens in the OPCW reports, and apparently his measurements of the chlorine cannisters are incorrect), and relied on another source that has remained anonymous. As far as study has discerned...Douma happened, Assad did it, and Assad/Russian forces tried to cover it up/create an alternative story about it. I truly believe individuals like Mate are well intentioned, but have finally fooled old folks like Chomsky. Anyhow, I'm partway through reading all of the material, so I appreciate any discussion on the matter (could be done elsewhere).

Interestingly enough, Aaron is the son of Gabor Mate, who has done amazing work with the homeless in Vancouver. However - Gabor also writes books where he claims to completely understand an 'indisputable' link between childhood trauma and substance abuse - while these two things have a significant link, they don't ALWAYS have a link as Gabor chooses to write about. I know this borders on a smear, but I think Aaron is a rich kid from Vancouver who is very influenced by his father.

I'm not stupid enough to call him a 'Russian Agent', but he will say that everyone says this about him, and he will call anyone who tries to pick apart the narrative a "Russiagater" and an apologist for American imperialism. It's super weird, because I think we can take a step back and not apologize for American, Russian, Chinese or Syrian actions.

Note: Just saw your note lol.

Second Note: I actually want to make a video breaking down the OPCW reports and the documents leaked by Wikileaks. I argue with a friend about it a lot, and it all seems rather plain and objective to me.

Yeah, The Gray Zone would probably be about where "Forward Progressives" is on that Media Bias chart height wise, but all the way to the left, imo. Not a good source for actual facts, but a good source to see what the fringes are discussing. I just thought it was an interesting example of how you can still twist what PO suggests into your own agenda.

It is a really interesting example. I know some people that I thought were very politically aware buy into this stuff really hard. I'm like, bruh, you're not watching CNN, but RT is...definitely the most popular news channel on YouTube homie XD

Most people would never even think of this, but Al Jezeera is actually pretty decent, especially if you want world news the usual American news channels don't bother with.

My second choice would be the BBC.

Presents as 'fair and balanced', actually parrots right-wing talking points.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=16664276

  • Using sourced like NTD and the Epoch Times. Epoch is rated a right wing and mixed factually by MBFC and NTWD is ranked as the same level of factual but even more right wing.
  • Cherry picking Trump's entirely frivolous election lawsuits to make it seem like they were all rejected on procedural grounds.
  • Making up stuff. Like how he 'forgot' the bill from Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo) had nothing to do with January 6th and that it was instead about Republicans who tried to overturn the election results.
  • Cherrypicking Trump's statement on the 6th (like how he ignored all of the ones Trump said that praised the people who stormed the capitol).

On top of that fact, what brainless pinheads in the US consider "far left" is fairly moderate on the world stage.

Of course, being brainless pinheads, they're easily frightened by GOP talking points so that they're scared shitless of this phantom socialist apocalypse the GOP keeps selling them.
