CNN host Chris Cuomo said on Friday that reform to policing methods in the U.S. will only come if the children of white people are killed by police officers. His comments came amid protests about recent shooting deaths. The Cuomo Prime Time host criticized the slow pace of reforms to the police and told his white viewers that if it were their children dying, change would come much faster. "How many more?" Cuomo asked. "Die of the pandemic, dying from police shootings. George Floyd, Daunte Wright. I wonder if you'll remember their names six months from now because they'll be replaced by so many others." Cuomo mockingly referenced reactions to police shootings that focused on criticism of the victims. "Why do that? Because you wanna make the problem them," he said. "Takes the onus off the idea that you're wrong about policing needing to change." "Forget that police are trained to deal with
non-compliance with force that is not lethal. Hey, comply or die," Cuomo said sarcastically.

"And you know what the answer is. You really do. You don't like it, I don't like it, it scares me," he said. "Shootings, gun laws, access to weapons. Oh, I know when they'll change. Your kids start getting killed, white people's kids start getting killed." "Smoking that doobie that's legal probably in your state now but they don't know what it was and the kid runs and then pop pop pop pop," he said, referring to gunfire. He suggested that if the victim was white, the attitude would be different. "Those start piling up? What is going on with these police? Maybe we shouldn't even have police," he said in mocking imitation of white people's reaction. "That kind of mania, that kind of madness, that'll be you. That'll be the majority because it's your people." "See, now Black people start getting all guns, forming militias, protect themselves, can't trust the deep state," he said. "You'll see a wave of change in access and accountability. We saw it in the 1960s. That's when it changes because that's when it's you." "We pretend that we're not just seeing same lying and lack of leading, and bleeding and death and pain," Cuomo went on. "New news, name faces, new placessame problems. You know it, I know it. You know that I know." Cuomo made a call for unity on the issue of police reform, saying: "Us and them, us and them. There's never a solution that doesn't begin with we. We, the people."

When white people are killed by police, the cops are often punished accordingly.

When it's people of colour, you have half the country defending them and demonizing the victims, while the cop gets a nice paid vacation.

I mean, I doubt reform would happen even if police kill white kids. Tons of white kids die in school shootings and nobody does anything about that.

Reform can only come about through bipartisanship. People on the left will have to drop sweeping generalizations of police if they want people on the right to concede that bad cops exist. While there are bigots who defend bigoted cops, dirt defending dirt, the primary disconnect is in how law enforcement -- specifically American law enforcement -- is perceived.

Conservatives tend to view grievances in simple problem-solution format. If you complain about something, it means you are seeking a solution. A liberal can say "all cops are bastards" as a means of letting off steam or making their opposition to police brutality known. Plugged into the conservative equation, "all cops" are the problem and their complete and total removal is the only foreseeable solution. If you want to remove all cops, you want lawlessness and anarchy.

That's the disconnect. They're defending bad cops because they think law enforcement as an institution is being attacked. They think that cops are generally good and that law and order are necessary to keep people from acting malevolently toward one another (raping, killing, robbing, etc.).

If the left is willing to concede that not all cops are bad, I fully believe the right will join them in condemning those who are. If 80% of cops are rotten to the core, we still have to go through the painstaking process of weeding out the bad ones and maintaining the good ones.

So my flavorful friend we know this isn't that case. For years and years , the left have been tip toeing around the this issue. It is not until recently people have been saying the hell with this it is the whole fucking system. Over and over people like Obama talked about how great most cops were. And Bill Clinton was cop lover and hell the VP right not is a dirty cop. And even with all that love for Cops. The Republicans still defend them no matter what. There is nothing the dems can do to. So why not tell the truth ?

Several years back some good old white boy robbed the gas station.

Then jacked someones car.

Led the police on a 30+ mile chase.

When he finally ran off the road he jumped out and was caught reaching.

He was shot to pieces.

The news bothered with it about a week and then it was forgotten.

seems like it was a pretty open and shut case of a justified shooting by police. I dont think anyone would be contesting a situation like that regardless of race.

Honestly the problems needs to be looked at on a state by state, county by county level in every aspect of local government. Even without looking it up, Id bet money its not an evenly dispersed per capita issue throughout the country. There are some changes in how police oversight works thatd help on a general basis everywhere, but some places likely need everyone from the police chief to local judges purged from their positions.

The issue primarily hasn't been addressed except by socialists, rap musicians, ex-cons, and blaxploitation cinema. I don't think too many people on the right are listening to the words of Tupac Shakur or watching the films of Melvin Van Peebles. And they're certainly not listening to Angela Davis.

Obama and Clinton didn't tiptoe around the issue: they ignored the elephant in the room. Just as the conservative presidents have done. Down to Earth bipartisan communication is the key to undoing this. You can't fight the right and the police. Not everyone on the right is far-right. The ones who are center-right can be reached. Most people are decent. That's true across political divides.
