Its been pretty dull so far. Almost halfway through season 1 now.

Is it me or is Riker just a poor mans Captain Kirk? Hes the only character who feels like a shameless holdover from TOS.

Riker is great... eventually.

Early Riker is just Will Decker from TMP with a different last name (literally - TMP was adapted from the pilot script for Star Trek Phase 2, and a load of the TNG S1 scripts are modified Phase 2 scripts or story pitches - Ilia and Troi are the same base character, too).

Cometh the beard, though, cometh the True Riker. And that guy fucks.

Protip: Barclay is the best character in all of TNG.

I liked the Sherlock Holmes episode. The idea of a Holodeck character becoming sentient and trying to sabotage the ship was neat.

Season 2 has had some clunkers so far, but The Measure of a Man is the first episode of the series that I straight up loved.

It felt near flawless from a writing standpoint, and Patrick Stewart is just so damn good.

It's such a magnificent episode.

The gamut of emotions on Riker's face as he first realises he's worked out how to win the case, only to then realise he's going to win the case is amazing.

And, yeah, Patrick Stewart fucking nails it in this episode.

I read somewhere that gene intended riker to be a poor man's kirk. Hell when auditioning Picard he was adamant that Patrick Stewart would never be cast.

I don't know if it's ever been confirmed, but I feel like Riker was intended to be the "main" character and Picard was meant to take kind of a backseat.

Picard was suppose to be the main character with riker being the pretty boy that banged anything that looked remotely female. After Gene's health started to fade his control of the series loosened and real character development started happening.

There are a few episodes that flesh him out a bit more, but basically it's acknowledged that some of his bravado and cock-suredness comes from a place of insecurity and compensation relating to his father. It's unclear for example when he goes to live on a Klingon ship for a bit if he is actually not afraid as he tells Chief O'brien or if this behavior and those like it are efforts to prove to himself he's not afraid.

I've heard Riker was supposed to be their Kirk in reserve in the whole Picard thing didn't work out for people. But that might just be second hand speculation.

My favorite Riker development episode might actually be when Q offered him the Q Continuum. I liked how that in a way set him apart as someone both alternatively-thinking but vulnerable to the corruption of power. Which made references to his motivation to be a captain more interesting.

That kinda goes away when it's revealed he loves the Enterprise so much he turned down promotions in The Best of Both Worlds

Riker doesn't just want to be captain. He wants to be the Enterprise captain.
Dude's ambitious, but not quite enough of a dick to actively get Picard tossed out of the job.

Yeah Measure of a Man is great. One of the few TNG episodes Ive watched.

The longstanding rumor is they created Riker as a backup, Kirk-type, to take over in case audiences didnt like having a dry diplomat as the main character.
