Its a little nuts how widely acclaimed those games are and so I was willing to put aside my fear of RPGs with a big-ass map to actively scroll through and a permanent menu bar on the bottom to try it out

To clarify, what type of RPG is it? Real time RPGs or whatever they called are kinda intimidating for me ever since the 90s, but maybe this game explains everything perfectly for a normie.

Aside from that, is everything else critical acclaim worthy? The graphics, story, etc?

haven't played the first one, but in DOS2, there are six pre-made characters, each with their own storylines and quests, that you can choose to make your main...you can also make custom characters, if you want.

two of them are human, one is a lizard, one is a dwarf, one is an elf, and one is an undead.

each race has their own special trait/ability, whether it's eating the dead as an elf to see their memories, being able to pick locks with your finger as an undead, etc.

but I think the biggest draw is all of the different options you get when it comes to combat, or just straight up avoiding it by finding different routes, talking your way out of it, and so on.

like, it's cool to be able to mix water and electrical attacks to get back at a bunch of dudes who ambushed you, but it's also cool to talk to a squirrel (if you unlocked the ability) and have it warn you that there's danger out there.

D:OS2 was fun, but it was too easy to walk into situations like this:

  • you're walking on the road
  • a bunch of enemies teleport in and ambush you
  • every enemy (who has high ground) goes before you
  • Your dudes, who are clustered together, get hit with multiple AoE attacks
  • You either fight a literal uphill battle or reload
I think I save scummed and reloaded about 200 times when I played. You can mitigate some of the annoyances by separating your units as you walk around, but having to do that all over, until you know where the ambushes are, is pretty fatiguing. If you can get around that downside, though, there's lots of ways to tackle situations and kill enemies.

I can't. I want to love it, I think it's a great game, but I'm just not good at it. I'm not the type that dives into the lore of games, and since you can pick up and interact with everything around you, I'm often missing things.

DOS2 is a bit better in the regard than BG3 right now, though. At least in DOS2 I have a mod that highlights everything

I hope you're talking about Shotgun because my complaint is just me being terrible, and not the fault of the game

The first game is significantly better than the second imo.

I detest turn based strategy games but Divinity Original Sin is something quite unique that you just have to give it a chance and experience one of the best RPGs ever made.

When the first game ended, I felt truly sad that my journey with these amazing characters had come to an end. I cannot recall any other game ever making me feel that way.

If you're a fan of RPGs, you simply cannot miss out on Divinity Original Sin 1. The second game doesn't draw you in quite like the first one does.

As far as gameplay, I recommend saving quite often and having multiple ones as well because the game can be pretty challenging at times, especially in the beginning when you don't quite understand all aspects to combat and have limited moves etc.

The first game is a strong 9.5/10.

I have many hours in the first game, but I lost the motivation to complete it.

My problem with it is that while I like the turn based battles, I hate the inventory management, the story and dialogue are unremarkable, and role playing as two characters at the same time was confusing.

It's a similar case to me with XCOM games, where I love the battles, but I hate the base building aspect.

I still think it's a good game, and I hope I can finish it someday, but the sheer amount of systems at work here and keeping track and micromanaging everything was a bit overwhelming to me.

DoS1 I only played up to the first town, where we killed everyone to loot the place, and afterwards we were lacking sources of spells/skills/arrows and quests and we stopt. So cant really say much about it.

DoS2 I fully cleared, and depending on how you play the game it will be extremely easy, or quite challenging.
Ive done a full clear with my cousin, and up until the point where I learned about Lone Wolf, we had quite some issues getting all characters properly geared. After we swapped to Lone Wolf (cutting your party from 4 playable characters to 2 to get boosts on your remaining characters), we started blowing up everything that engaged us.

One other thing I like is the way you can play the game, be a good guy and only harm enemies, a bad guy and kill everything in the game, the ability to steal items from merchants, combination, you name it.

Im starting a hardcore run this week, full party wipe = gg restart incoming.

If you can get a friend to play the game itll be a lot more fun in my opinion.
One thing to keep in mind though, is to both go either magical or physical damage, as enemies will have armor for both, before they start taking HP damage. Mixing it up will cause you to take a lot longer to kill something.

I'll probably end up buying the first game one of these days on PSN, since my PS4 messed up my disc, and I wasn't able to make it past the first 20 minutes.

but from what I hear, in that game you can only play as a human/have human party members.

I just want to mention that I watched a playthrough of the first one. They were just fucking around, digging up graves in the graveyard because that's what you do, sure, why not.

One grave spawned an extremely high-level skeleton that proceeded to murder them. It was hilarious.
