just thinking about Simpsons a lot lately, and was thinking if I was ranking characters on a scale from _____ to ______, I dont have any idea what the first blank would be. Im having trouble thinking of a recurring character that I straight up dislike.

edit: ok actually I do know who he is. I actually just watched the gay apartment episode a couple days ago. I didnt mind him there, but I had no idea that he became a recurring character.

Sideshow Mel gets pretty annoying once he starts showing up in every single crowd scene for a mandatory line of overly-theatrical exposition.

Super hot take, and probably not my actual answer if I think super hard about it, but I've never really been a fan of Kirk.

yeah when I saw that answer I didnt feel the sort of instinctive but hes great, because ____! that I get for some others. He definitely has some funny lines like anyone, but he also may have the highest rate of just being kind of obnoxious.

I feel like kid me liked him a lot more. I wonder if that sort of fat gross nerd stereotype just doesnt hold up as well as some of the other characters.

(I did have the instinctive defensive reaction to all Kirk slander. Kirk forever. Milhouse 5ever.)

Martin is the best child on the show!

As for my answer: there are literally no bad characters in classic Simpsons. None. That's how good the show was.

I don't cringe when she's on screen or anything, but Lisa's teacher is basically outclassed by Edna Krebappel in every way. Was never fond of Kang and Kodos either; in general, I don't care for the Treehouse of Horror episodes as much as most Simpsons fans, with a few exceptions (like the Elm Street parody).

On the flip side, I love Patty, Selma, Sideshow Mel and Martin.

Comic Book Guy is in this weird zone for me. He was pretty alien but still highly amusing anyway to me as a kid. I'm not sure if realizing that there are people who legitimately think and act like him (e.g. the worst and most vocal parts of various fanbases) makes him more or less funny in hindsight. It's mildly terrifying regardless.

Of the names listed so far Milhouse's parents really doesn't do anything for me, and the rare times someone quotes something about them that is supposed to be funny I tend not to find it that funny, so them I guess.

Limiting myself to characters from the classic era who appear more than once, I guess either Bleeding Gums Murphy or Manjula. Only really great moment I can think of with BGM was when he was on the Cosby show. Manjula I couldn't think of anything great.

Once they developed Otto to be NOTHING but a stoner/druggie, and Moe's one joke is to be suicidal and depressed (when hes not getting a focus episode), it got old

Part of Comic Book Guy's appeal is that we all know people like him. He's the snobby guy who hates how the thing he likes isn't as good as it used to be and is dismissive of anyone who suggests the new stuff is better than the old stuff. He's not "likable" per se. You can just laugh at the people he reminds you of, I suppose.

Manjula is a good call, I'm thinking Maude as well. A lot of the wife/mother characters have very little personality of their own.
