You've not heard of Mank (new David Fincher movie) or The Trial of the Chicago 7 (new Aaron Sorkin Movie)? They're definitely the two heavy hitters in terms of mainstream appeal. They're both on Netflix so check them out I suppose, the latter is really good. With that said, it's a weird list. Not bad, but weird. No Ma Rainey is a surprise and I see no reason why Soul isn't Best Picture worthy. But on the other hand, Sound of Metal and Minari are pleasant surprises.

Also, very strong Animated category this year. I had forgot that Shaun the Sheep was eligible as that came out in 2019 for me, but that's a great film, Wolfwalkers is much deserved (and Cartoon Saloon keeps its perfect record) and Soul is going to win which I can't complain about too much.

But 2020 was literally the worst year in the history of the Academy Awards, so I can't even be mad at the list

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (new Aaron Sorkin Movie)?

Actually, totally forgot for a sec but yes I had heard of this one. Waypoints spent almost an entire podcast talking about how bad it was.

You say that, but I listened to that whole podcast and it is very clear that they loved it as much as they hated it. Aaron Sorkin is 100% Rob and Gita's schoolyard crush that they are mean to to show how much they like him.

It was a good movie but a little poorly written in the back half if you ask me. There quite a few better horror/thrillers to choose from: I'm Thinking of Ending Things or The Invisible Man if wanted something with the same subject matter.

Seen all the Best Picture nominees except Minari and The Father. Minari was a sure thing, but I don't know why The Father is nominated for everything. I've also got Ma Raini and One Night in Miami on my must-watch list

Surprised First Cow didn't really get anything; I had heard that would be a frontrunner

Agree with this sentiment. This is the first year that I really can't be bothered to be upset with any misses from the Academy.

I don't even think I could build a decent top ten for the year.

Release was too long ago - hype just kinda faded over time. A24 probably also just opted to campaign solely for Minari.

It was my favorite film of the year and it wasn't close. One of my favorite directors combined with some of the best actors of today, magical surrealism, and a deeply dark, menacing tone and it was already guaranteed to be a hit with me, but even then it still exceeded my expectations

funny enough almost the exact same thing can be said for The Lighthouse the year before, which also got completely snubbed

I've only seen the ones available on streaming but this seems like the least egregious list they've done in ages. But then there were barely any movies to choose from.

I liked I'm Thinking of Ending Things but there was no way the Academy would go for something like that, they don't like Kaufman when he gets too weird. At least Sorkin didn't get a Director nod.

I saw it. It's definitely good, and I'm honestly surprised it didn't get nominations, but I also wasn't blown away.

Having just seen "Minari," I would like to make a "No Guts, No Glory" prediction for Youn Yuh-jung in Supporting Actress. In a year where the category is very split, and where the top two contenders are so divisive (Close and Bakalova), I could see her slipping through for a win. It's a funny, showy, performance in a movie that a lot Academy voters are going to be watching.

Years ago, I remember someone predicted Laura Linney's surprise nom for "The Savages" by saying "I can't imagine that someone would watch the movie and not nominate her." I don't remember anything about Laura Linney in that movie, so I'm not sure I agree with that particular sentiment, but it reflects how I feel about Youn Yuh-jung. I find it hard to believe that voters would watch the movie and not want to vote for her, especially in a weak year, when they might have trouble mustering up enthusiasm elsewhere.

Edit: Damn, I just checked the odds, and apparently she actually is the favorite, lol.

I think I'm largely fine with most of the nominations this year? Another Round getting a best picture nomination would have been nice, but this is a surprisingly strong set considering the year. First Cow probably deserved some attention but it's also a film I wouldn't expect to be there (and I still need to see it).

The only huge and unexpected snub to me is Dick Johnson Is Dead in the documentary category. An absolutely stunning film, but as always, the people deciding that category have gone out of their way to exclude what should have been the obvious frontrunner. This happened the last two years as well with the Apollo and Mr. Rogers docs.
