I have played the first, like, 30 minutes or so of the game. I know a bunch of little things here and there (who all the party members are, which ones are optional, shinra sucks energy out of planet, Aeris dies, Omnislash kills Sephiroth, there's materia and limit breaks, etc) but almost nothing has any context. I have no idea what it's like to play this game.

It's funny that Cloud knows Ice and Bolt. FF7 doesn't do wind and rain elements right? remember how the SMRPG character who knows ice and snow moves was a cloud

So during the scorpion boss, the music didn't actually turn into the boss theme, weirdly enough. Cloud *tried* to warn Barrett "If you attack while its tail is up, and it'll counterattack with its tail laser." Here's how that played out:

scorpion boss: *raises tail*
Cloud: Barret, watch out! Attack while its tail is up
me: *mashes attack while tail is up*
scorpion boss: *tail laser*
Cloud: and it'll counterattack with its tail laser!
scorpion boss: *tail laser*
me: aaaa

These prerendered graphics are hard to read. I walked around for like 5 minutes before I found the way out of the reactor.

The explosion sound effect is very SMRPG. Love that the townspeople consider us terrorists. I wonder how well they understand the impending threat. I also wonder when the planet is going to die. Will it happen in our lifetime? Our grandkids'? Do we know? How crazy is it for Cloud not to care that the planet is dying?

Met Tifa. Her massive rack is the only clearly-defined 3d object in the house.

Not a huge fan of the combat in the intro, but I expect it'll improve. Every enemy felt the same, the right option was always obvious, menus and animations were boring, sometimes everyone is sitting around doing nothing. Graphics are pretty ugly too. But I'm invested in the story already. Square knows how to write intra-party conflict, and it seems like they put a lot of work into the worldbuilding. Looking forward to seeing why this game is so popular for myself.

yeah I figured it was kind of like FFTA where those were the three main elements and then there were one-off spells

Whoa PRESIDENT Shinra? My my what an interesting little wrinkle. I guess it makes sense that these massive life-force-sucking machines are being allowed everywhere. Unless "President Shinra" is just the president OF Shinra, and it was translated like that for some reason.

So Cloud keeps telling everyone he only cares about getting paid. He says he's going upstairs, then if you talk to an NPC he says "I thought you only cared about getting paid, why are you talking to me?" Love it <3

I got the Restore materia, which gives you Cure. I gave it to Barrett at first until I saw how little damage Tifa was doing, so now she's my white mage.

On my way to blow up the second reactor. Enemies do so little damage that I just mash attack with every character in every encounter. Met President Shinra, who recognizes Cloud. He summoned a helicopter and a boss, which was cool-looking. Boss was way too easy though. The game throws gil and levelups at you. I feel like this is not going to be a difficult game, and that the materia you choose won't really matter. It's still early though.

Fell from an impossibly high height. That's something Final Fantasy does a lot of.

Fell through a church ceiling a quarter mile down which apparently "broke my fall." Sure. Flowers can't grow anywhere in Midgar except for here? That's cool. I wonder what this is all about.

Aeris has a little bit of a sense of humor, I like her :D Not sure why people call her Aerith.

This segment where these Turks chase Aeris is really lame because they literally do 3 damage to her. Somehow Aeris is doing more damage to enemies than Cloud? Oh right there are different types of physical damage right? Aeris is using a stick and Cloud (I keep calling him Tidus lol) is using a sword so maybe the enemy is weak to blunt damage but resistant to slashing damage.

I bought a million potions. Now I'm looking for Aeris's house and can't find it lol (EDIT: ACTUALLY, I HAVE FOUND IT. YAY)

Oh, that makes sense. I love that this is a meme. I wonder how no one caught this. You'd think they'd have the part up until the first boss theme pretty much down pat.

I know what you mean. Plus I don't think translator actually knew games very well. When you equip a materia, it changes your stats. This is translated as "your situation changes." That is accurate but it doesn't communicate what happens at all. It's so weird that Final Fantasy was so sloppy this late. Glad they're mostly better now. Are 8 and 9 translated better than this?

From what I understand, the translator was basically just working off a spreadsheet that had all the Japanese lines in it and was translating them with zero in-game context. This doesn't excuse some of the more egregious translation fuckups (this guy are sick), but given how context-heavy the Japanese language is it's easy to see how things like "attack when the tail's up" might slip through.

dang aeris's mom told us to slip out in the middle of the night, what a butthole

Aeris is waiting ahead for us anyway and for some reason. Cloud is like "oh no you are too weak to fight these bad guys" even though nothing can hurt us.

I fought some giant hell house and only used 1 cure spell, and I could've just used a potion instead. It took forever to find the path through because the backgrounds are hard to read.

Playground scene is cute. I like Aeris's insistence on joining us. I think she's currently my favorite character. Her or Barrett.

Now I'm rescuing Tifa from Don Corneo. Making a dress that's soft and shiny. Love how Cloud tells the guy "make me a dress bitch" and Aeris is like "uh, Cloud, why don't you go wait over there for a little bit so I can talk to him."

Now we need to go get a wig. "Go to the gym and you'll find lots of people there like you." Someone who made this game did their research lolol

The squatting minigame was frustrating because the opponent's sound effects are identical to yours which makes it hard to get in a rhythm, but I still won on the first try. Now I've got my fabulous dress and wig so I'm going to Don Corneo's.

Yeah that's how it sounds to me. I'm liking the writing a lot though, even with the translation. I love how assertive Aeris is without being a jerk about it. She reminds me of Peach from SMRPG.

man i keep bringing up that game but it's really interesting how much ff7 and smrpg have in common compared to ff7 and ffx

I dunno if "challenging" is necessary but as soon as I hear the battle music I just mash circle as fast as I can until it stops. This game has a million little things in it and none of them have mattered yet. I've been poisoned, but I don't actually care because mashing circle to end the encounter faster saves me more health than hunting for the item in the menu. The most effort I'll put in is making sure Cloud doesn't attack an enemy when Aeris can finish it off.

Also I know the materia system has more stuff coming but the stat changes feel completely unimportant. For instance, both the Lightning and Ice materia have:
Strength -1
Magic +1
HP -2%
MP +2%

These are identical. Wouldn't you expect a lightning specialist to have different stats from an ice specialist? And they are negligible. I get that these are early game materia but these stat changes may as well not even be there.

Also you know how levelups are super easy to get? If materia changed your levelup stats, rather than applying an imperceptible modifier to your stat total, you would actually feel how ice specialist Cloud and lightning specialist Cloud are different, which would give the elements meaningful identities.

I mean it adds up (especially with stronger materia that induces bigger stat changes). I think the idea is you load all your magic onto one person to make them a better mage, and you give a physical attacker none to keep their strength at max. It's not the individual materia that matter as much.

oh, ew

that sounds as wrong and unnatural to me as "teedus" so i will continue to call her aeris, sorry if that makes you uncomfortable!

Thank you for letting me know though. I wonder why they felt the need to fix it after everyone already knew her as Aeris. It's not like either name is a real name, and they both sound equally "fine." Aeris is actually easier to pronounce, because like 5% of languages have the "th" sound (although 2 of them are English and [castilian] Spanish).

I'm impressed how they animated Tifa's walk in heels, it looks uncomfortable. I love Don Corneo's pelvic thrusts too. And the talk about chopping his balls off. It's crazy that this was rated T in 1999. Laughed out loud when Don Corneo dropped us down a trap door, wasn't expecting that at all.

It's weird how I've never heard anyone talk about the Mako eyes thing. The game keeps bringing it up. That seems like the kind of thing that would resonate with people but I guess not.

Plate above Sector 7 just dropped, killing a bunch of the people we started the game with. I thought we were gonna be able to save it, but I guess not. That was a gut punch.

Yeah I guess I haven't seen it taken to its logical conclusion yet. Plus like Cloud has the highest attack and magic in the party so far so it's like "uh when should these other characters cast spells." Right now Cloud has one attacking spell, Aeris has the other, and Tifa has Cure. The sum total of all of those materia doesn't really change anything, so I'd rather just give everyone a spell.

The Shinra have Aeris now so we're going to her mom's house to let her know. Aeris's mom tells us about when she met her. Sweet story. "We became close very quickly. That child loved to talk." Aww like she does now. What a good character. Now we're back at Wall Market.

It's pretty crazy how there's a materia store. My only options are fire, ice, lightning, restore, and cover. The only ones I don't have are fire and cover. Cover would let you take damage for an ally. I don't think the stat buffs are worth the money so I'll just pass.

well ok i accidentally bought a cover materia because i was trying to see what stat buff i could get for ONE THOUSAND GIL. i got +1 vitality. AMAZING. also it doesn't even give you cover. wtf. i spent ONE THOUSAND GIL for +1 vitality.

I thought I was gonna have to use one of the nine (9) ethers I stole from those, uh, purple floating enemies, but I didn't. I got a keycard 65 for guessing the password. Met Red XIII in the thing with Aeris. Renamed him Red. I don't like the way he talks, he's my least favorite character so far. Like Gundham Tanaka, but serious. Species-personality mismatch. Would work better as a cat imo, maybe a big cat.

Got caught and sent to jail and recapped the story. Shinra kidnapped Aeris because she's supposed to literally lead them to the Promised Land, which seems to be an actual geographic location with tons of Mako. She can do this because she's the last Ancient, which is a special kind of human.

Went to sleep and woke up and my door is unlocked for some reason. Cloud doesn't wake Tifa up right away and investigates alone. Outside absolutely everyone is dead. We follow trail of blood upstairs and find President Shinra dead. Cool. But now his son is president.

All the combat stuff was lame because your party members take no damage. Boss fight against President Shinra's son is narratively interesting but I literally just traded Fire spells for shotgun blasts, except I used high potions when my HP was yellow. Combat encounters on the elevator should've been interesting but in practice you just pick your character's most damaging option and mash circle.

Motorcycle cutscene was cool though :D Especially the way it transitioned from gameplay to cutscene.

In Kalm. Cloud is telling the party about a mission where Tifa led him and Sephiroth (did Tifa mention that she knows Sephiroth?) to a nearby Mako source. In the flashback Cloud is a bright-eyed kid and Sephiroth is an over-all-this-shit daddy. They lay it on a little thick but it works. Like that Sephiroth's in your party. Don't like that he says "we don't have time to go back for our comrade who fell" and then "here is a 10-minute explanation of where Materia comes from." Also it'd be cool if Tifa could fight too (her master is an NPC you can talk to) but oh well. At least we learn that Cloud's benevolent sexism is a persistent character trait!

We discover that Shinra is creating monsters by exposing humans to Mako. Sephiroth freaks out because he thinks this is how he was created. We get back to town and he locks himself in the library and reads all night. He discovers that the Ancients would travel from planet to planet and the humans... stopped them? They used their energy for selfish purposes. And that his mother Jenova was the being they found in a 2000-year-old layer of rock.

"Out of my way, I'm going to see my mother." He went crazy and burned the town down and killed a bunch of people including Tifa's dad. Cloud confronts him and draws his sword and the cutscene just ends? Officially, Sephiroth is dead, but I actually have insider knowledge that Sephiroth is still alive :o I'm looking forward to figuring out what happened.

Speaking of figuring out what happened, I like the random flashbacks that Cloud gets. One of them (Tifa talking about how she hates Shinra etc) got shown in its proper context in this little interlude, so I'm hoping we see more of those get paid off.

Yeah I would say the combat never really gets "interesting". Definitely not on a Micro-management level, anyway.

The combat just kinda gives a purpose to the Macro game, giving you a reason to explore and hunt for weapons and materia, giving you a reason to get excited about trying out new materia, giving you a reason to level up particular materia.

And...well, it's just fun to strategically junction All materias. That's basically FF7 gameplay in a nutshell IMO, just a lot of junctioning All materia with stuff, and then changing your mind and junctioning it with something else.

Honestly, and I know this is sacrilege, but I don't like the soundtrack very much. Uematsu is a good composer, but he isn't a very good producer. Meaning, his core competency is putting the right notes in the right order. He's not good at telling the computer how to approximate a human, emotive performance, or ~*~crafting a sonic aesthetic~*~

This worked great in the NES era because the sound chip did basically 100% of the work of ~*~crafting the sonic aesthetic~*~ if you're not an audio engineering wizard like Tim Follin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQlLl2j5THQ

The only real difference in the "aesthetic" of the soundtracks between Mario and Bubble Bobble and Final Fantasy was the actual compositions, because the soundtracks all had basically the same sounds.

But now in the PS1 era your soundtrack can be literally anything, so the composer has to choose good sounds, and make sure they sound good together. And honestly Uematsu is bad at it. The strings are the worst offender here. They just sound unpleasant. The problem isn't that they're video-game-y, it's that Uematsu's using them like classical strings, even though they start way louder than real strings, and lack dynamic range. It's like you're supposed to imagine real humans playing these string parts with emotion, because Uematsu didn't put it in.

I wish they got Yoko Shimomura to do it. She composed SMRPG just a year prior. She can do fakey strings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWpsEP17Yug and industrial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKQbXaNJ5LQ and every song she makes just bops.

My favorite song so far is the boss battle theme. It sounds like it's being played in a big empty high school gymnasium, but all the individual instruments sound like they were recorded in the same big empty high school gymnasium. This song's general live-rock-concert sound feels like an intentional choice, while the rest of the soundtrack feels like the composer gave up once he typed the pitches into the software.

Mako reactor theme is real good too, the focus is mostly on the nifty piano and horns and the 12/8 time signature.

They corrected the Aerith naming issue only like 2 or 3 years after the original's release with Kingdom Hearts, and yet here we are nearly two decades later and people are still using the wrong name lol. Intentionally even! How silly!

I use Aerith but it still sounds like you're trying to say Aeris with a lisp.

I had a whole writeup about fighting Zolomy twice on the way to Mythril Mine and meeting Elena and the Turks and buying materia at fort condor before going to Junon but it got deleted :(

Zolom fight was the hardest and best fight in the game so far. Aeris used Cover to build limit. Barret spammed Bio until Zolom was poisoned, then used mind blow to keep Zolom from using Beta. Everyone used elemental magic. He kicked Cloud out of the fight both times I fought him. Pretty fun.

Even as a dumb 9-year-old I was suspicious of Kingdom Hearts. I was like "Golden Sun is a well-told epic set in a fascinating world. Also, this Kingdom Hearts stuff will never make any sense." And based on its reputation I was right! Square writes enough dumb plot contrivances as it is (in FFX, how many times did Tidus lose consciousness and then wake up in the next plot location? 3?). Their writing isn't going to get better when they have to get their money's worth out of the Elsa Spiderman Finger Family Baby Shark Funny Nursery Rhyme license.

i guess what im saying is if aeris has been appearing in other games they must all be those obviously-bad ones like final fantasy all the bravest. which makes sense because can you imagine square tastefully reviving a massively popular and lucrative dead character?

I mean Advent Children and other FFVII games started to come out right after Kingdom Hearts.

But they're not great.

I have never played a game where her name was Aerith, and I like the name Aeris much more anyway so I have no great incentive to change how I pronounce/spell it.

Congrats on beating Zolomy!

Square makes a lot of games that appeal to people who wanna hang out with their friends Cloud and Tifa. If they're using fanservice to market the game, then you will probably like the game if you like fanservice. You will probably dislike the game if you don't care about fanservice. Square doesn't hide it when their games are silly. Lots of people are happy with literally anything FF7, and they fund the development of new games.

heh thanks :D yeah I beat him twice, I'm pretty sure my strategy would work on any enemy that can't one-shot my characters in one hit lol

the only way to learn that it's canonically supposed to be aerith is to play a bunch of obviously-bad games (or the remake) so i never got the memo because i only play games if they aren't obviously bad

I don't see why you'd have to play any game to know this info as it's been common knowledge for 20 years. You and others don't actually like the name Aeris better, but only because it came first.

What is the difference between Aeris/Aerith and Tiedus/Teedus? Is it that only one written down? Or do you dislike both? Or is it something else?

What does the pronunciation of a name have to do with the spelling of a different name?

I mean I don't really care, 'Aeris' just comes more naturally to me but I do genuinely think it's a nicer sounding name with the gentle s sound.

I also still pronounce Yuffie wrong and catch myself saying choc-obo like choc-olate, like I always did as a kid lol.
