I don't think so, I'm level 16 at the chocobo stable by the marsh. I checked a playthrough on YouTube and he was level 13-15. It's not like battles would be radically different at level 13. Are you supposed to run from most battles or something?

edit: I lost all my progress from Junon so I gotta go do that again. But that means fighting Zoloms again, that's fun.

Yeah my memory of FF7 combat is almost entirely just mashing basic attack, and occasionally throwing in a heal. Except for unusual battles like boss fights or whatever.

You arent expected to take on Zolomy until after you're able to return with a new vehicle anyway, you can just yeet right past him on caught Chocobo and come back later

Yeah, the game wants you to figure out to skip it as you're supposed it think he's unbeatable at that point. I do like that it's possible though.

I appreciate FFVII's combat system. It's simple and easy now, but created a lot of things that could be improved upon. Many boss fights are still really fun.

I mean I'm a casual RPG fan so the simplicity is part of the appeal

Plus you're referring to regular ass battles. If the regular battles take more than 60 seconds in an rpg, they're doing something wrong imo.

The regular battles in Undertale were all longer than 60 seconds, and they were actively fun. In fact, the only time they're ever short is in the genocide route, and the whole message of the genocide route is that mashing attack in an RPG is actively unfun.

i still have not gotten any further, i start and then go "eh no thanks" and then stop lol

If something is unfun for everyone, "that's just the genre" is not a good excuse. I dislike FPS's, but they make decisions that appeal to FPS fans. FPS fans aren't going "man these guns and grenades are cool but i hate that i can't see my character."

But mashing circle in an RPG is not fun for anyone. You're walking around and then all of a sudden the music changes for 30 seconds and you go read your book or whatever and mash circle until the music changes back.

On the Switch version you can turn off random battles so you probably should have started there!

edit: Actually you might be able to do it on PS4 too? Just press L3 + R3 and you should see a little Buster sword with a line through it letting you know they're turned off.

heh you're right, I definitely come across like I think I'm way smarter than you. But I think it's because I'm one of the only people ITT who never developed an emotional connection to the game so I'm being this big heartless logic lord about all these flaws that don't bother y'all because they make it feel like FF7. Also I've been "stuck" on a part of the game that I kind of dislike lol

heh you're right, I should turn off random encounters. Good on Square for including quality-of-life improvements like that. I know people do low-level runs and stuff so I should be fine. I'm emulating it on PS1 so I guess I'll use a gameshark code.

Yeah the newer versions also have a turbo mode so even if you want to leave battles enabled you could turbo through them in like 5 seconds.
