I watched the first 2 and a half minutes. He mentioned Mario's movement feeling slippery and how wall jumping was as fluid as it could have been. I decided to keep watching. He seems to like underwater parts. He doesn't like the camera, but that's a lot of people... he also said that the Mario All Stars game was his first experience with the game. I'm not sure if he's taking into account that the game is much older than the newer stuff, so of course the controls are as good or responsive. Not to mention, it was made for a different set of controls...

That being said, he did say, "These are just my opinions. You have yours. I have mine. That should be obvious. Don't be an ass."

So, it's whatever....

He could be referring to pretty much all 3d platformers for a long time using the SM64 formula of: slowly and awkwardly bump around and collect stuff. Good 2d platforming (SM3, SMW etc.) Was about managing speed, screen space, and enemies, it wasn't as twitchy as a 2d shooter, but a lot of the skill was reactionary and speed related.

I agree but part of why super mario 64 is so good and why sunshine dropped the ball is that a couple months ago I replayed 64 and didnt get a single star from either of those levels because I didnt have to

Ok I didnt know there was a physical version as well but it is nuts that they wont even make that available anymore either. I wonder if they are gonna let retailers sell remaining stock or if they made them sign some agreement that they have to pull the copies from the shelves.

They arent Disney though and if they are really gonna try to do some Disney Vault type stuff with video games then I might just skip Nintendo stuff going forward

I doubt it. I see stacks and stacks of this game at my local Best Buy and it is a top 15 best selling Switch game. I mean it is already down to $40 on Ebay it is so common. I would be surprised if this game is worth a lot.

I always felt it sucked, but I am pretty sure my reasons aren't even addressed in the video. I think it sucks because I think every 3d platformer from the 90's and early 00's suck. They all have the same problems: Slower gameplay than their 2D counterparts, difficulty based solely on camera angles, formulaic boss fights, and an over-reliance on "open" levels with multiple objectives.

They are different type games. 3d platformers are more about collecting stuff and exploring than tough platform challenges (most likely due to the issues with depth perception in a 3d environment), while older 2d platformers were more about beating the stage. Although, nowadays even 2d platformers are mostly about collecting stuff than actually being challenging. Overall, I feel like 3d platformers have a ton of potential with the extra dimension and increased mobility options. It is a shame that they are relatively rare whereas 2d platformers are pumped out with wild abandon.

As for Mario 64, it does not blow me away anymore with the overly simplified environments, but at the time it was mind blowing with all the mobility options, the analogue stick, big open environments ect and Mario 64 DS was a crazy ambitious port for a DS game. It is hard to believe that you could get a big 3d game on the DS like that.

I've lost count on how many times I've gotten all 120 stars in SM64 over the years.

Good game but it shows its age sometimes.

I've only gotten all 120 stars in Sunshine twice(once on GC and once in 3D Allstars) because of those blue coins.

I figured it was some clickbait by some troll desperate for attention, hell, then the first minute made me think that he was making fun of people that make that type of video. Then it turned out he has a LOT of legitimate problems with it, and he focused on the game itself instead of the games fanbase.

I don't like the game either. Like most ps1 and Nintendo 64 action games it's early 3d, and dear god does it show.

If you want good, older 3d action games, go with the PS2.

Boss fights just suck in most platformers, unless they've got more complex combat systems like Megaman or Metroidvanias (in which case the game as a whole tends to be focused more on combat than platforming). Platforming just isn't a good way to fight bosses, but platformers' game engines and control schemes are mostly just designed for platforming and not more engaging combat.

That said, I saw a video once that looked at how Mario Odyssey circumvented the usual problems boss fights have in platformers. The formula for platformer bosses is generally to alternate between vulnerable phases (in which you have to manoeuvre to hit them) and attack phases (in which you have to use your platforming skills to dodge their attacks), which becomes a problem when the player is familiar enough with the game that the attack phases are easy and the fight essentially becomes a matter of waiting, bored, until the vulnerable phase shows up. What Odyssey did to subvert this was add challenging, not-immediately-obvious ways to interrupt the attack phases and jump straight to the vulnerable one. That means more skilled players don't have to wait around as long, which is huge for speedrunners and just generally makes the game's bosses less of a chore than bosses usually are in platformers.

It's really mostly just its camera that hasn't aged well (and graphics, obviously, but that's a given). The level design and controls (camera aside) were great, it's just held back by a camera that's bad even by the standard set by Banjo Kazooie a year later.
