Got to floor 199 in PotD and got a no item floor with no serenities. We hit a luring and wiped (but had a raising on), and then the raised RDM died trying to get to the cairn of return

Live and learn - the way to handle a luring trap that deep when in a party is to sacrifice just the person that hit it, then (if needed) snipe them off one by one

So long as no one gets any enmity on the enemies spawned by said trap, they'll go back to chilling in the room they were spawned

Back when I was big into s rank hunting, I used to have like 20 macros that were just random phrases the game made you type for various quests.

I was mostly known for my favorite, "free kupo nuts". And then they literally offered nuts with s ranks in ShB, and it made me happy.

Speaking of Vercure, how do I, uhhh....use it?

Whenever I d-pad over someone's name in the party list and hit Vercure, it just hits me instead. It's the same way I select a dance partner, so not sure why I'm doing wrong. Is there something to it I'm not realizing because I haven't played healer yet? Pretty sure the one Veraise I've gotten off (have only just started playing Red Mage at 70+ again) worked, so...

Ohhh, gotcha. I guess it's different if it's something you CAN'T cast on yourself like Verraise and Dance Partner.

Pretty sure you can cure with just soft target, ie pressing up or down to select a party member without pressing x. You do need to have them selected before you start casting though.

At the very least, when I'm White Mage, I always am hard targetting boss spamming Glare, and just press down on the tank to throw a tetra and then automaticallt go back to the boss.

Was thinking hard about whether to take DNC or RDM to cap first via the MSQ now that I'm leveled out with the quest level...decided I cared more about Peloton than anything <_<

Every expansion has more than the last, but it was noticeable in Stormblood (by which I mean like 2 or 3 times?) and in Shadowbringers so far its at its worst having done it like 5 times, one of which was just a horrendous because it was super long. It's not a big issue or anything, just annoying. Just remember that some nightmare creature at Square Enix decided it was also case sensitive.

I wanna say the first time is a random MSQ quest where you have to call out for Tataru but I don't remember when that is. Those quests are very sparse so they won't happen often enough to get annoying.

Hooking a USB keyboard up to a PS4 was real easy. Just stick the adapter into the USB port and you're good to go. I did it when setting up my PS4 just to make typing in all the passwords and everything easier.

I assume PS5 is just as simple.

Is your gear up to date?

Because yes, you should be using your AoE heals to deal with AoE damage.

Also not just for heals but for any AoE, you can figure out if it is 'worth it' to cast an AoE vs multiple regular heals by simply multiplying the potency by the number of targets, if any of the newer people here don't know.

So like if a single target is 240 potency and an AoE ability is 100 potency, it's worth it to start AoEing at 3 targets being hit because 100 x 3 = 300 potency, which is a 60 potency gain over using the single target.

For healing it can be a little more complicated than just an if=then situation since you can need to prioritize based on who is in danger, but for DPS its 99.9% of the time simply 'if there are X amount of enemies, use the AoE'. Generally the magic number is 3, but there are a few cases where 2 or 4+ are when you start AoEing so refer to your own abilities for that.

Just Medica II is usually fine if they're not gonna get hit again imminently. Use additional Medicas after that if they need to be healed up immediately. You should generally be using assize on cooldown, but that also heals a decent amount.

There's also asylum, but people might be dumb and refuse to stand in the bubble. And then at level 76 you'll get an aoe equivalent of afflatus solace.

For Gubal you should have access to Shire gear. That right there will be a big help.

If you know a big AoE is coming, drop an Asylum and prep Medica 2. That and Assize should take care of things.

Regen in general is insanely strong. For Medica II the total potency is 700 for each person (compared to 300 for Medica).

Yeah regen effects are the highest potency heals you have that aren't on long cooldowns.

In a lot of boss fights (that aren't Extreme/Savage content), you can put Regen on the tank, refresh it every time the cooldown wears off, and barely ever have to heal him outside of tankbusters.

Just hit quest level 77 a couple quests ago. That mining stuff was ugh, but I guess we're in the clear now. Definitely feels like it's going a lot faster than Stormblood, but it's likely just because I'm enjoying it so much, even if this specific section of the expansion feels like filler.

The Trolley Saga(tm) is easily the nadir of Shadowbringers. It's not terrible but the rest is just so much better.

WHM's one of my main classes!

Fights are basically choreographed MUCH more than most MMOs, and it becomes a thing of pattern recognition. One thing I like about FFXIV is that you're expected to damage a whole lot more, not "leave literally all your damage behind to heal" like, say, WoW.

At max level, this means a series of If-Else statements, but as for situations for all your abilities at max level:

Glare: Single target damage, and your opener on fights where you don't need to heal immediately. Spammable.
Dia: Also single target damage over time, lasts 30 seconds. Instant cast. Throw it on the boss when it isn't already on the boss.
Holy: AoE damage and stun around you. Don't use if there are only one or two targets around you.
Swiftcast: Reserved to rez your cohealer instantly or make a clutch Plenary+Swiftcast+Cure 3+Afflatus Rapture play from a partywide 1 HP before another AoE goes out to wreck you.
Benediction: Reserved, in this order, for yourself after Raise (if you're out of an AoE first, so you don't remove your invulnerability, for the DRK that popped Living Dead, the GNB that popped Superbolide (AFTER the cast, not before.)
Plenary Indulgence: Use when a big AoE is coming out to prepare to top off people.
Divine Benison: Use on someone who's about to be popped by a heavy hit. Usually aids the tank, but sometimes can save a not-fully-healed person about to eat a big single target hit. Since it's oGCD, you can immediately follow it up with...
Afflatus: Solace: Use on a DPS that got popped by a mechanic but didn't die.
Afflatus: Rapture: Use after Plenary Indulgence for best efficiency, as though it is an AoE heal, it is quite weak (to compensate for it being instant cast and consuming a lily.)
Afflatus: Misery: The hardest hitting attack WHM can use, instant cast, but requires Solace/Rapture to be used three times beforehand. Dump it often, since Solace/Rapture are great to dump during a fight between damage.
Assize: I'll be honest, I usually use it as a DPS cooldown. Use it a bit into the fight after you've consumed some mana, and remember it's oGCD so you can use it immediately after a cast if an AoE happened.
Esuna: Your "remove debuff from single target" ability. Debuffs that can be removed are shown on your party's bar as highlighted. Lots of debuffs are lethal. You should be doing this when you can, until you've learned which ones you can ignore (though people will get mad at you if they're, say, asleep for 20 seconds when a quick cast will remove it.)
Lucid Dreaming: Use around 70% mana to keep the train going.
Cure 1: Remove from bars. I'm sure it has a niche use but if you've zeroed out your mana to the point where you need to fish for a freecure on Cure 2, you have...
Thin Air: Use if you're completely OOM. Overcompensate and pop it, Lucid, and Assize all in one go. Also handy to use immediately after dying to Swiftcast Raise someone.
Regen: Maintenance healing that can be otherwise spent Glare-ing. Throw it on someone that's going to need healing but you can otherwise ignore - and yes, it does stack with...
Medica 2: Basically, "your party will have half its max health back in 10 seconds, if they can afford to wait it out." Spamming it leads to running OOM in a hurry, pace yourself.
Cure 2: Damage control - single target flavor. Gets a lot of use when a fight starts to go south.
Medica: Damage control - AoE flavor. You have a bunch of other AoE heals that take priority over this, but I guess you can use this if you need to spam heal and people aren't stacked for...
Cure 3: You're generally not going to use this in random groups. It's the most effective AoE heal with a cast time, but the "splash" range around the main target is very narrow.
Asylum: IDK just throw it down whenever you need a bit of heal amp. It also provides regen in the area, but it's a really weak regen.
Temperance: Your only AoE premitigation option: use it before big, meaty, rapid-fire damage (such as Nidhogg Akh Morn or Eden: Refulgence's first ice phase/near the end of the fight when the raid boss is in Light form and spamming AoE blasts. Also use for glamour shots out of combat.
Presence of Mind: It's an overall cast speed buff. Typically, I use it for DPS by spamming Glare, but it's useful if you need a bunch of heal output?
Surecast+Rescue: The former is a self-buff that lets you not be knocked away while casting, the latter yanks someone who botched a mechanic to you before they fall to their death (or more appropriately, yanks a BLM out of their leyline so they stop trying to ignore mechanics when they're already affected by Brink of Death.)
(4-mans only): Swiftcast Holy: Yes, Holy is a "healing cooldown." Swiftcast Holy will stun everything that can be stunned in an area around you after its cast time.
Repose/Fluid Aura: Delete from bar. They're incredibly useless.

It's a lot to read, but if you levelled it in dungeons, you pretty much got a feel for it. WHM is all about big numbers on healing to the exclusion of other utility.

TL;DR: Remove Repose/Fluid Aura/Cure 1 from bars, reserve an "oh crap" section of your controller/keyboard for big unavoidable AoE and practice weaving your oGCDs into your hardcasts.
