i really liked that game. Prob my 2nd favorite on ps1. Did you ever play it?

Yup. Love that game. And AE2&3 on PS2.

I would buy a PS5 in a heartbeat if they announced Ape Escape 4. Or remasters if they localised some of the spinoffs we didn't get.

EDIT: Wait, shit, Ape Escape was from the studio that Sony just closed down. That sucks.

I always got stuck in Ape Escape 1. I never had any idea how to proceed once I got to a pretty far part in the game.

I don't remember, I think I needed a new gadget or something to proceed, but never had any clue how to get it. I do remember it being pretty far in the game though.

Heck yeah one of my favourite PS1 games. Just played it again this week actually. 2 is great, 3 not as great but still good. Wish we had more games.

I played the demo on one of the Playstation Underground discs. I didn't really get it, so I never played the full game.

Loved Ape Escape, went back to play it recently but the PS1 disc doesn't work on Euro PS3s for some reason :(

And Sony's Japan Studio is being canned so no chance of it coming back either unless it gets the Crash/Spyro treatment.

It's a copy protection thing- the game is supposed to ignore controller input if it thinks it's been copied, but the method it uses only works on real PS1 (or PS2) hardware- the PS3's emulator doesn't support the check and so it locks up on the assumption that it's a pirated copy, even though it's actually a real disc in a 'fake' PS1.

Huh I never knew what the reason was, thanks for the explanation. Other PS1 games play perfectly fine, I wonder why they put different protection on Ape Escape specifically.

Yeah. I feel like I played both 1 and 2 but only beat one of them. Which one has a protagonist named Spike and an antagonist named Specter? That's the one I beat. And if they both do then oopsie -sie!

Specter is the villain in all of them. Spike is the protagonist of AE1 (and most of the spinoffs, but the other main games have different protagonists).

I didn't, but I played and loved Ape Escape 3. The transformations blew away 12-year-old me's mind.

There was supposed to be a new Ape Escape announced last year on the anniversary, but Sony apparently cancelled the game for some reason. Tragic.

On the plus side, Ape Escape's creator left Sony Japan during the exodus so maybe a spiritual successor will come into existence if aforementioned creator still has the inspiration/passion.
