Considering they'd never intended to do that, it would be a very different event altogether. And had that been their intention, they probably would have been able to do it because they had numbers on their side and at least some of them were armed. Keep in mind what just *one* guy with a gun had done at a practice session for the Congressional Baseball Game despite having dozens of guards, including a security detail for the guy who had been shot.

MILES AWAY

Contrary to the rhetoric, it's unlikely that the disorganized mob would have tried to kill Romney or any other politician. Most of the rioters had no idea they'd even be entering the capitol building that day. There were a handful of people in that crowd who seemingly masterminded the break-in --- given that they were using radios to coordinate the break-in --- but even with those people it's not clear that they had intended to actually kill anybody.

We have on video people saying "kill Pence" but that was never one of their goals I suppose. especially since the phrase "stop the steal" kind of implies stopping Pence from overseeing the certifying of the electoral college results.

Or maybe "stop the steal" doesn't somehow mean preventing Pence from doing his duties? After all, since they've failed every step of the way in overturning the election, what other options do they have to "stop the steal?"

What would have happened then?

This is grim but it really depends on who specifically was killed.
If a random unknown house member was killed there would've been a bit more outrage and maybe less of people trying to contest the election later that night.
If Romney or Cruz or any republican senator was killed, then 25th would've probably been invoked and most would be willing to impeach by now probably.
If any of Mcconnell, Pence or Nancy was killed whew lord there would've been so much hell to pay.
If most of congress was hobbled? That's a completely different world altogether. We'd probably still be in the middle of massive civil unrest.

This. If some low level Democrat was killed, nothing would happen. If ANY Republican was killed, Trump would've been convicted in the senate before leaving office, Mitch would've called them back early just to do so.

Pence was supposed to be "on their side" and by certifying the election (ie, doing his job) he "betrayed" them.
Ideology doesn't matter, for example all the evangelicals that overwhelmingly voted for a serial adulterer.
all that matters with an autocrat or demagogue is complete and absolute loyalty to the leader.
Anyone that "betrays" the autocrat is hated even more than his political opponents because they broke this "vow". The autocrat also fears such people the most b/c they have an extra air of legitimacy since they were someone the autocrat previously endorsed, which makes their dissension far more dangerous. They need to be crushed. Quickly and mercilessly.

Trump was the only one that had it in his mind that Pence had the power to do that, everyone else from his advisors to Pence himself explained to him beforehand that a VP does not have the power to overturn an election. He and he alone convinced the crowd that Pence had betrayed the country, all based on a lie.

He even tweeted about how Pence had failed them and betrayed the country AFTER he had been told that rioters had breached the capitol building

Honestly, I don't think that much would have changed, except that the outrage from both sides would likely have lasted longer and the GOP might therefore have stuck with the "what Trump has done here is deplorable" position for longer. As it stands, they held it for just long enough for the immediate outrage to subside and their base to go back to valuing opposing democrats more than seeking justice for these crimes, then they went back to supporting Trump because that seems like the best political move. Dragging out that transition further might have influenced the outcome of the impeachment because they might have kept up that facade until after it had finished, but if it came to that, odds are they'd come up with some excuse to delay the impeachment trial until they felt they could vote against it.

Right now America (and this is funny too) ranks near the bottom in terms of all metrics used to measure quality of life and you know who's above and beneath us, 3rd world countries.

The United States now ranks behind countries with far less wealth, including Estonia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Greece.
