Tom Bombadil 02/07/21 11:43:49 AM #1:	I've always treated lyrics as kinda an afterthought to vocal music, but I have recently realized that a good song hits that much harder when the lyrics are also insightful or expressive. In particular, I've found that Bill Wurtz, Mori Calliope, and [redacted] always sound like they're talking directly to or for me regardless of the subject matter or feeling of the specific song. TheCodeisBosco 02/07/21 2:45:09 PM #11:	I feel you, OP - I've never been a "lyrics guy," generally. But there are some songwriters who can grab my ear. Donald Fagen and (R.I.P.) Walter Becker from Steely Dan are the best examples - as great and polished as the music is, the stories they tell are vital to the experience and elevate Steely Dan to being a top-tier group. Curtis Mayfield is another longtime favorite, and as far as newer artists go, I think Lianne La Havas and Kadhja Bonet do a particularly good job. --- The music was thud-like. Filk in general tends to put more emphasis on the words than most other genres (mainly because filk is defined more by the subject matter than the style of music the words are put to). I'm pretty big on musicals and his lyrics are so interesting and they can be very touching at times as well. Kendrick Lamar and Sufjan Stevens would probably be next? I'm generally not much of a lyrics person but those five are commanding enough to always draw my attention to their words.
