I completely agree that in a sense, elderly Nazis are a soft target because you can safely prosecute them without the need to confront awkward questions about aspects of your own country's foreign policy over the last twenty-odd years. Witnessing how the French authorities allowed genocidaires from the former Hutu Power regime in Rwanda to live comfortably and with virtual impunity in France over the last quarter of a century makes French breast-beating and soul-searching over French complicity in the Holocaust seem like a parody of guilt. But that's no reason for Germans, or anyone else, to give former SS concentration camp staff a get out of jail free card.
