I do think the rule probably needs to be re-examined. Like it's just flukey that this is a touchback and not like Cleveland ball at the one yard line.

Whenever I hear this discussion I always think of the Leon Lett fumble and how everyone would be cool with the Cowboys getting the ball at the 1 and scoring anyway.

I would compromise and say the defense takes the ball over at the spot of the fumble

Rule is 100% fine as it is. Rewards hustle plays by the defense and HEAVILY punishes fumbling around the goal line.

Offense shouldn't ever be rewarded or given advantage for being careless with the football. Nothing wrong with the rule.

The only issue I'd have is the helmet-to-helmet which I don't see why that can't be reviewable.

if the ball was inside the endzone then it's a touchdown and the play ends so you can't have fumbled there

When I say place it at the 5, that still leaves a bit of room for exploitation, so to be more clear, either the 5 yard line or where the ball was fumbled, whichever is further from the endzone.

The rule is bad because if you fumble literally anywhere else on the field and that fumble goes out of bounds -- the team that fumbled keeps the ball at the spot of the fumble. If you fumble in the end zone, though, the ball changes possession, and the other team gets 20 yards.

The reward is too much for the mistake. And I think most players and coaches agree. Honestly it'd be different if the offense had a chance to recover the ball, but if it goes out of bounds, they don't, and the defense doesn't even have to grab the ball.

This would be better at least. I don't have any problem with the current rule, but that would still maintain some level of disincentive even if it's a bit softer.

I can't think of any team that would suffer this amount of setbacks in less than three quarters and still be battling this way.

That isn't the case though. If you fumble the ball out of your own endzone, you both essentially lose possession and the other team is rewarded with 2 points. The rule is currently consistent with that as is.
