So it looks like the Tennessee Vols are firing yet another head coach, and Fulmer may also be out as the AD. That means we'll be looking for our (let me do a quick count) 5th coach since 2009. It feels like every coach we've hired since Kiffin left has been like our fifth choice because nobody wants this job. The expectations are too high, the leash is too short, and the cupboard is too bare.

I'm seeing a lot of fans clamoring for Hugh Freeze because he did well at Ole Miss and beat Bama a couple of times, but you're also guaranteed to get put on NCAA probation within 5 years, so I don't think I'd take that tradeoff. Oh well, at least I don't have to deal with delusional Vols fans who think this will be the time we lure Jon Gruden into taking the job!

And with that off of my chest, let's play some more Cold Steel IV Act 2.

So what's next? Once I head back into the hallway with Rean, the meeting with all the political leaders ends. Prince Albert and President Rocksmith both talk to Rean about his involvement in wars involving them and their allies, and they actually praise him for doing whatever he could to minimize casualties. They invite Rean to chat with them privately in their rooms as well.

Then it's time to finally meet Cassius and Kloe. They all lament over the loss of Olivert, Toval, and Victor Arseid. Cassius makes an interesting comment by saying they have to learn to move on without them, even if it means doing something those three would never have approved of. They also invite Rean along to chat and reminisce together.

Then the Erebonian crew of Alfin, Musse, Aurelia, Bardias, and Elise come down the stairs. Alfin was a little shocked to learn what Operation Mille Mirage actually entails, and Rean asks her to share some of those details with them at dinner. Then Musse, Alfin, and Elise invite Rean to join them for some tea.

Now it's time for round two of mingling with all the guests. First up is Cassius and Kloe with all the other Liberlians. Estelle asks why Julia (whom I haven't thought of at all since 3rd, and then it hit me that her last name is close to Schwarzer and maybe it's a distant relation or something! So I looked it up and her last name is just Schwarz) and Zeke didn't come with her, but I guess they're busy making sure Erebonia doesn't invade them while they're at it. It's nice to see the old dynamic and chemistry between the Sky cast here. Estelle mentions visiting Zin when she was in Calvard, too, so it's good to see him get a mention.

Then Rean has a private chat with Cassius about Master Ka-Fai and Rean's circumstances and background. Cassius tells him not to worry about the things he can't change. He mentions that he also got a letter about Rean from Ka-Fai, but he can't divulge its contents to him at this time. Although he gives him a little tease and says it's about the final art of the Eight Leaves One Blade style. Oh hey, we get a Nial and Dorothy mention before the scene concludes, too, nice.

Now I can visit with everyone else. Next up we have Aurelia, Juna, Elie, and Alisa. They talk about Elie's mom who moved to Erebonia after splitting up with her dad, and we learn that Elie and Aurelia are actually relatives! That would explain the similarity in hair color (and perhaps their massive endowments). Juna almost makes the connection that Diana is Elie's mom, but she doesn't quite seem to get there.

Then we visit with Grace, Elise, Gaius, and Ash. Well, if I hadn't accidentally spoiled myself about Wazy being a Dominion before, this would've given it away when Grace lumps Wazy in with Gaius, Kevin, and Ries! Nothing else of interest here aside from that though. Next up is a room with Rosine, Agate, Bardias, and Elliot. They're discussing military strategy and resource allocation. Rosine says no one understands or fears the Great Twilight more than the Septian Church, and although she can't share those details with us, they've decided on what measures they plan to take.

Across the hall, we run into Emma, Altina, Josette, and Kaela. They're discussing the rogue Hercules squad and their inability to track them down because of their RAMDAs. I'll be curious to see what they do with that in the Calvard arc. Emma thinks the Dark Dragon essentially turned them into vampires, and the timeframe to turn them back into humans is fairly short, so I imagine we'll pick this plot point back up relatively soon!

In the room next door is the "serious business swordsman room" with Laura, Kurt, Cassius, and Sara. We learn Cassius is the one who recommended Sara for A-rank in the Bracer Guild. Cassius tells Laura he worked with her father on the Bracer Guild bombing case that took place during the timeframe of Sky FC. Naturally, she wants to talk about his skill with the staff. Cassius says that a friend (which friend again? I feel like we learned this in Sky but it's been too long!) taught him how to use it, and he managed to incorporate some Eight Leaves One Blade techniques into his fighting style as well. Kurt introduces himself, and Cassius says he'd like to meet his parents someday since he hasn't had the chance to do so yet.

Then they talk about Schera for a bit, and Cassius mentions she has a relative in Ouroboros. I'm still not sure why Schera is deliberately keeping herself hidden even from her friends, but I guess we'll learn the reason soon! Duvalie overhears the conversation and says that Luciola hasn't reported back to Ouroboros since the end of Sky SC. Duvalie even drops a mention of Weissmann and invokes Arianrhod's interest in Cassius, too. In typical Duvalie fashion, she asks how Cassius was able to master so many disciplines, but it's not like she's all that impressed or anything!

After this is Renne, KeA, Tita, Celine, and Angelica, who does Angelica things but thankfully it isn't TOO creepy considering the targets. Next up we find Lloyd, Musse, and Tio meeting with Grand Prince Albert. I'm guessing he shows up in Azure since Lloyd talks about having met him before. Oh, he was at the trade conference, makes sense. Then they start talking about Albert's niece, and it sounds like I'm supposed to know who this is, so I guess she also shows up in Azure, but they don't mention who it is. Oh hey, I learn that Tio's parents are still alive and she's apparently been in contact with them, too, thanks to Albert. I guess that's more Azure spoilers!

In the next room, Jusis, Machias, and Towa are talking with President Rocksmith. I think it's interesting that Rocksmith is on the way out here. That's clearly a deliberate decision to set up the Calvard arc. Apparently Rocksmith is also trying to recruit Towa for the CID! Then we have Estelle, Kloe, Alfin, and Lucy. Once again, the conversation moves to Olivier, and Estelle and Kloe talk about the impact he had on their group during his time in Liberl. And we learn that Lucy studied at Jenis Royal Academy in Liberl, and she was on the student council with Lechter. She didn't show up in 3rd, did she? I don't remember. Oh heck yes, I can play Pom Party with Kloe now, and it only takes a couple tries to beat her.

The final room this round features Joshua, Crow, Fie, and Randy. They're talking about the relationship between Osborne, the Gnomes, Ouroboros, and the jaegers. Unfortunately, they don't have anything too interesting to say. On the way out, Rean runs into Duvalie, and they talk about all the people Musse has gathered together. Duvalie mentions that Joshua left Ouroboros around the time she joined, so that's a good timeline tidbit. Then Crow appears and mentions that it's weird Vita isn't here. Rean and Crow think it might be about time for the Rivalries to kick into high gear (I imagine that's what Act 3 will be all about).

This feels like a good spot to split the post up, so let's do that!

More Cold Steel IV Act 2!

It's dinner time, which means it's time to outline Operation Mille Mirage. Nobody seems particularly enthusiastic about doing it, but with the Erebonian army numbering at 1.2 million and rising, drastic times call for drastic measures. Renne and Kloe feel like the civil war (and even going back to the Hundred Days War or the Orbal Shutdown Phenomenon) were merely moves leading up to Operation Jormungandr. Looking at the map, it seems like the goal of Operation Mille Mirage is to force Erebonia to fight a multi-front war to spread their troops thin. And with all the extra support Musse's been able to scrounge together, it basically puts Calvard on an even footing with Erebonia in terms of raw numbers, if nothing else.

Musse says that coordinating everything will be a monumental task, and the purpose of this meeting is to determine the person who will be in charge of that. She declares that Cassius Bright will be the Supreme Commander of Operation Mille Mirage, which I wasn't expecting, I gotta say! But still, he's a natural choice considering his genius as a military tactician. Estelle doesn't seem totally happy that her dad accepted the position, and Cassius calls this the Great War, so I guess we're making the obvious parallels to World War I!

Kloe says the scale of this is bigger than just a war with Calvard. They also have to consider Erebonia's two Sept-Terrions and the curse, which spreads to every nation they conquer. This is all for the sake of reviving The Rock (I feel like I make this joke every time they talk about the Great One, but whatever!). If this is what it takes to stop them, then so be it. Alfin says she can't agree to the plan in principle, but she still has to allow it. Now the question is if the Bracer Guild, the SSS, and Class VII will cooperate with the plan.

Unsurprisingly, one by one, they all decline. Lloyd, Estelle, and Rean give moving speeches with some good music in the background to go along with them. Rean in particular says they owe it to Prince Olivert to find that third path he always stroke to take. I really like the idea that Olivert continues to live on in all of them, even if he's gone. They all agree to mutually respect everyone's decisions and to cooperate when possible with information and keeping civilians safe.

And with that, the mood is abruptly shifted by the appearance of Campanella, the Ouroboros gang, and their allies among the Intelligence Division, Zephyr, and the Gnomes. Last of all, Cedric appears to say Osborne has entrusted the task of the Rivalries and foiling Operation Mille Mirage to him. They used the society's Astral Code to hack into their system, and to boot, it's the grand return of the Glorious, Ouroboros' gigantic warship, accompanied by a fleet of eight other airships.

...And it turns out this is exactly what Musse predicted. They couldn't send the imperial fleet after them because it would be a bad PR move and it would instantly shut down any support for the war. However, if Ouroboros takes down the Pantagruel, they can just blame it on Calvard. But since they predicted this, they also have an escape plan.

Now we have to split into separate teams. In Team A, Rean, Lloyd, Joshua, Crow, Kurt, and Ash are locked in with room for two more. Feels like Agate and Randy are the natural choices here, although I feel bad shutting Jusis out. On Team B, Estelle, Renne, Elie, Tio, Duvalie, Juna, and Altina are locked in, so we only have one open slot. It's gotta be my girl Laura here, with apologies to Sara, Tita, and Emma. I was glad to see Estelle didn't miss an opportunity to take a shot at Gilbert.

Gonna have to save the rest for later!

No, she did. She was the Student Council VP in Kloe's first year and spent a great deal of that Door in 3rd where you follow Kloe back then being tsun at Lechter and trying to get him to do his job. It's how I was able to ID when you first meet her back in Act 1 and why Kaela kept throwing me because I wondered if she was also someone we should know... but that was her first appearance AFAIK.

Those chats on the Pantagruel are so good. Duvalie declaring Anelace a rival on hearsay is hilarious and the Ash/Joshua conversation about Hamel is just very good. Loved seeing all the interactions across this section.

Let's play some more Cold Steel IV Act 2!

Getting to roll through the Pantagruel with these dream lineups is a lot of fun. Hearing them all banter among themselves between battles is great. Estelle and company get to beat down Gilbert for old time's sake. I had totally forgotten he was even in 3rd until they brought it up here! He even has his old pilotable archaism, and Tio and Renne say it must be the work of the sixth Anguis. Rean's group gets the tougher challenge in Gareth the Blitz, especially since we can't attack him directly during the fight.

Once we reach the upper deck, Cedric, Georg, and Rutger are waiting for Rean's group, while Mariabell, Campanella, and Shirley are waiting for Estelle's group. Oh, and Lechter, Xeno, and Leo show up from behind Rean's group, and Sharon, Ines, and Ennea get behind Estelle's group to surround them, too. Campanella points out that there's a boy/girl split on both sides here, although I guess that makes him the odd man out, literally. Rean knows he has to buy time for Gaius to bail them out, so he asks Cedric if it's really true that Osborne put him up to this. Cedric says that Osborne didn't explicitly tell him to destroy the ship and everyone aboard it. Joshua is furious that he seems to have learned nothing from Hamel, unlike his brother. Cedric justifies it by saying that the world is built on lies, but that's pretty lame, not that I'd expect anything less from him.

Bell says that Cedric wanted to use the Glorious for this, and the Grandmaster gave them permission to do so, although she's wanted to use it herself for a while now. Campanella says she's just a slave to her desires, and it must be a third Anguis thing. I love how literally everyone takes shots at Weissmann. Altina says that the gender split doesn't apply with Campanella here, and he's kind of "oh right sure whatever" about it, which confuses everyone. So is Campanella secretly a girl, genderfluid, or just genderless? Who knows!

Oh man, it's that Silver Will remix again, heck yeah. First up it's Leo, Xeno, and Lechter. Lechter's Brave Order makes things a bit annoying at first, but we manage to overcome it and drive them off. Next up is Sharon, Ines, and Ennea doing the Radiant Star formation, which surprises Duvalie. Their ability to link and their relative speed make this fight a bit difficult, but we manage to hang on and drive them off. The third fight is Campanella, Mariabell, and Shirley. It looks like the only one I have to beat is Bell, so naturally she's by far the most annoying because she can repeatedly put everyone to sleep. Thankfully, Campanella is surprisingly easy to run off, and then I'm able to whittle it down until Bell is indeed the last one to go. For the last fight, it's Cedric, Rutger, and Georg. After the last fight, I figured Cedric was the only one we had to beat here, and I was right. This is actually the easiest fight of all, but unfortunately, it's so easy I accidentally KO Cedric before Rutger, argh. This guy gets lamer every time he shows up.

Then we cut to all the party members we didn't take, and it appears we've already run into Musse's worst case scenario. That didn't take long! Then the Glorious launches three Aions like the ones we fought in Cold Steel III, except these are the upgraded models. That means it's Divine Knight time, but Rutger and Cedric bust out theirs, too. I guess it's time to kickstart the Rivalries into high gear! Oh wait, Rutger says it doesn't count unless we're in a shrine, for some reason.

Cutting back to the others, Musse tells all the others to escape with Alfin in the final landing craft. Apparently, Musse, Aurelia, and Bardias intend to go down with the ship. Or rather, they intend to use the Holdo Plan to take down the Glorious because ramming always works. Fortunately, KeA and Cassius don't think that will be necessary since they failed to give proper credit to Rean's third option. Or should I say Olivert's third option?! Heck yeah, I knew he was still alive, and with a fancy new eyepatch, to boot! That would explain where the rest of the Thors crew and Schera have been all this time. Even Vita and Bleublanc are with them.

So now the question is how Olivert and Toval survived. I'm assuming Victor Arseid is around here somewhere, too? Or did they actually kill him off? Either way, Toval just chalks it up to Aidios looking out for him and won't say much else. Even Ouroboros and Musse didn't see this coming, it seems! Oh hey, it's Mueller, too. Olivert says he's not here to join Mille Mirage, but to provide the wings to the third path, which he's officially dubbing the Radiant Wings, presumably in honor of the Radiant Blademaster himself.

Cedric ain't amused by this turn of events and orders Ouroboros to exterminate everyone. Osborne shows up via some weird drone projection (along with Rufus, Alberich, and Claire for some reason) to shut that down. Also, I'm assuming the "Richard" here is Alan Richard, who's apparently doing good counter-intelligence work against the Erebonian Intelligence Division. Osborne states that Operation Jormungandr commences in six days, which is also when the Rivalries will begin. Black Alberich not so subtly eyes Georg when he wonders how Olivert and company (pun intended) survived the explosion, although Angelica suggests Bleublanc also played a part in it (although he wasn't even around then, was he?).

Then Irina and Schmidt show up to tell Mariabell they've finished fine-tuning some sort of device. Wait, what the heck? It's Masked Victor Arseid?! Okay, this one officially blew my mind. He clearly states that he has not lost his memories or his sense of self. Only his left arm, it would seem! Cassius assumes Victor is being compelled by the curse against his will, similar to the artificial copies of other people in Phantasma. I gotta say, I wasn't expecting 3rd to get so much play in this game...! It turns out Victor being the greatest swordsman in the Empire is why the curse chose him, and he seems okay with just going along with the whims of fate.

And with that, Act 2 is finally over, whew!

The boss music there is actually an arrangement of The Decisive Collision, which admittedly is basically the Cold Steel equivalent of Silver Will anyway (it plays during some of the Crow fights in CS1/2).

Olivier not dying didn't bother me because of course he didn't, but I really wish -someone- had actually died on the Courageous - probably Victor since CS3 pointed out he was permanently nerfed following the McBurn fight anyway (and no one would've cared if Toval died tbqh). Relatedly, calling him "the greatest swordsman in the Empire" is blatant Aurelia disrespect and I don't stand for it

Yeah, I get those two songs mixed up because they sound kinda similar to me!

and yeah, nobody really cares about Toval except for his connection to Carnelia and the fact that he's Toby from those books. I think they've been selling Victor as the greatest swordsman since CS1 when he owned Ogre Rean. Plus, it would've been really jarring for Aurelia to defect because of the Curse, and it damages the credibility of Musse's cause if she's not there. So I get why they went with Victor there.

They could have just not gone with anyone at all tbh. I thought that whole plotline with Victor was kinda dumb, along with a few other things from this part of the game. (Notably not Olivier's return which I thought was great, though I also knew it was happening going in because spoilers)

And now it's finally time to start Cold Steel IV Act 3!

We open with a quick tour of the Courageous II, which is basically a mini-Thors campus without the classrooms. This is a nice upgrade since the Merkabah was getting a little cramped and now we've got a lot more Thors people aboard, to boot. I noticed Kurt says "inch" in his voiceover, but they corrected it to "rege" in the onscreen dialogue. I imagine stuff like that can be hard to catch because you just get so used to reading English idioms that you probably just glaze over them without thinking.

Oh hey, Gwyn Reinford is here. He tells us that Olivert approached him about building a second Courageous in the event that he ever lost the first one. That's some foresight on his part! Well, to be fair, he admits that he only ever anticipated that it would be commandeered by Osborne at some point, which makes sense. Now we finally get Olivert's explanation of how they survived the destruction of the original Courageous, complete with a flashback to that moment at the end of CS3. Then we hear Georg offer them a 24 second gravitational barrier in order to give them a fighting chance at survival. I'm not sure what part Bleublanc actually played here. Did he create that barrier, or did he simply pull them out of the wreckage? Oh, I guess he healed their wounds, too.

Okay, I admit that I laughed when Rean quoted Victor's cool speech from the end of CS2 and Ash just calls him an edgelord. Anyway, we rewind to the previous night, where they received a message from Roselia and Thomas. Roselia mentions she's heard glowing tales about Estelle's and Lloyd's groups from Ragnard and Zeit. Then Tio drops a "We haven't seen Zeit since..." teaser, augh. Apparently, both of them vanished and their whereabouts are unknown. Oh, and I just learned that Zeit was one of the Holy Beasts who watched over the Sept-Terrions. Man, what a spoileriffic snippet! Thomas says Kevin, Ries, and Wazy are working outside of Erebonia at the moment, so I doubt we'll be getting cameo appearances from them here!

Thomas also mentions that the Papal Guard independently decided to cooperate with Operation Mille Mirage. Then Roselia adds that spirit veins are acting up all across the continent and not just in Erebonia. Crow says that this has to be a seismic event (perhaps literally) for the Rivalries to even be possible. As such, Olivert offers us the use of his ship for whatever purpose we see fit. He says that the Rivalries are probably the true goal of Osborne and the Gnomes, but it also might be their one chance at putting at end to the curse and the Great Twilight. Lloyd says it's probably impossible to stop the war from happening outright, so this might really be our best option.

Then Estelle asks the pointed question of what exactly this curse is. Then they talk about the sort of strife these Sept-Terrions can cause. Elie mentions that Crossbell's Sept-Terrion has been lost, and that's why they had to artificially create one in KeA. So, uh, can Ouroboros even complete their plan without it? They seem to want all the Sept-Terrions, and an artificial recreation was deemed not good enough for their plan. I guess this is something that won't be answered for a while. Also, we need to learn more about why the Sept-Terrions exist at all, especially considering the double-edged sword nature of the Aureole and that tree. I imagine Erebonia's Sept-Terrions are much the same way, although I feel like we still don't know much about what they actually did at this point.

Roselia talks to us about the Luna Shrine, which is the only shrine the witches have watched over. There's a reflecting pool that displays the truth or something, which may have been the source for the Black Records. She invites us to meet her there for what will probably be a heavy infodump. Naturally, the Liberl crew and the SSS aren't staying around, but I imagine we'll see them again in the finale. And we're finally treated to Act 3's title: Seekers of the Dawn.

And now that I can finally control Rean again, it's time to take a break!

I think the barrier was George and Bleublanc just pulled them from the wreckage and healed them but idk. Like I said, not really a fan of how all this played out even though it's Trails so you always knew it was going to happen somehow but I'm not even entirely clear how it did happen either.

It's time for more Cold Steel IV Act 3!

Now we can explore the Courageous II a bit. I don't have any bond points yet, so I don't have to worry about that. Rean talks to Schera and says this isn't the first time they've met. Did we actually meet her in CS3? I didn't think we did, but maybe I'm wrong! I know she was around behind the scenes, but I felt like she never actually made an onscreen appearance. Also, Olivert calls Cedric a tryhard, but he means it in a loving, brotherly way. We also get a nice brotherly scene between Kurt and Mueller, which also implies there's a bit of romance going on between him and Julia. I don't think that was a thing in Sky, but that's cool. It's a good match! Major Michael asks Rean to look out for Claire because he doesn't think she can keep this up much longer, which has been her plotline the entire game so far.

I'll have to do some more exploring tomorrow.

(Cold Steel 4)

I don't think we ever saw Schera in Cold Steel 3 so I just assumed it was something that happened off-screen at some point over the past several years. As for Mueller/Julia, I remember this at least being hinted at in Sky, particularly somewhere in The 3rd. (I think it was implying that it could become a thing in the future--not that that it was already a thing that was happening)

The Expanse S5E8 watched:

I was surprised Marco didn't make the classic villain mistake of not locking the controls on Naomi's ship. I caught on to what she was trying to do with the transmission pretty quickly because I was tossing around that idea in my head before she tried it... but then I almost talked myself out of it as it went on before the reveal. I wasn't expecting such a grim end for her here but I'm a bit surprised she didn't try to intentionally trigger the detonation after she heard Alex respond to the fake transmission. Unless the warning notice implied she couldn't? It wasn't on screen long enough for me to read. Probably should have went back and paused but oh well. Also kept expecting Naomi's improvised radio to get through to Drummer at some point... or maybe even Alex and Bobbie when they scanned emergency channels but I guess that was all just a red herring. I guess all we can hope for now is that they get the edited transmission, realize the fact that Naomi had to resort to something like that means something is up, and that that something is "don't get near this ship." ...I'm pretty sure this season isn't ending in a total party kill so presumably that will indeed happen but...!
