"Age of Ultron" is on par with "Endgame", which puts them in a tie for third among Avengers movies.

Which is to say, I enjoyed both of them, but not as much as the original and definitely not as much as "Infinity War."

We're talking 7.5-8 for AoU and EG, 9 for the original, and 10 for IW.

I actually kind of agree with you on that.

I like Endgame a fair bit more than I do Ultron, but it's still in third place by a lot.

Infinity War was a clear last as far as the Avengers movies went.

It's the only one where I felt I was just waiting for it to end.

Almost 3 hours of nonstop fighting that felt gratuitous well before that almost 3 hour point. It's pretty clearly the most "mindless" of the Avengers movies and I don't think I'd watch it again.

I also dislike Civil War so there's my marvelpinions.

I do agree with the common sentiment that IM3 and Thor 2 are in the "forgettable to bad" range. I basically can't remember anything from Thor 2.

GOTG2 is mostly fun but feels like a filler episode.

The majority of 2nd installments in MCU are mediocre to bad, with only Spider-Man and Cap. America as exceptions imo.

GOTG2 is ok but its flaws are obvious. tries waaay too hard to replicate the humor that made the first one great while not being nearly as funny.

also, how the fuck can they tease adam warlock in the post-credits scene and then not include him in either infinity war or endgame?? i'm very curious how they're gonna retcon themselves outta that one.

Ultron takes what many people who are down on Marvel movies call a weakness in the MCU writing and makes it an actual weakness

EVERYONE in the movie is a quip machine. While I disagree this is a problem with MCU writing in general, it does actually hurt Ultron because what makes MCU writing work is the villain is generally taking things seriously so there's still some gravitas to things. Ultron is joking right along with the heroes in this one. And yeah people are like "well it's cause he's got Tony's personality" and that ain't an excuse man. I can't possibly care about what's going on in this movie cause nobody in the movie does.

Bottom tier MCU movie for sure.

the MCU does have a tendency to make characters who aren't jokey in the comics jokey (thor, star-lord, ultron... hell, even iron man wasn't THIS jokey if i remember the comics correctly). it works sometimes but yeah, it's a problem with ultron.

Tony is a jokester in the MCU because people on set loved RDJ's ad-libs on the set of the first movie.

Haven't seen Age of Ultron since it came out and don't remember liking it.

I feel like AoU was just too damn Whedon-esque with a lot of side plots that frankly weren't very interesting.

I feel like Ultron was a huge missed opportunity in terms of being a great villain. His jokes the whole time just made him fall so flat. What we needed was the cold, uncaring, terrifying monster. That guy is a fucking nightmare if played right, but instead he was just making funny ha-has. We had so many people making jokes and we didn't need the villain doing it too.

But Whedon gonna Whedon.

Edit: Whoops, I glossed over Lopen making the same point. Good post, Lopen!

The worst part was that ALL the marketing made it seem like this is the direction they were going. It made it look like AoU was going to be a very dark movie with super high stakes and the most threatening villain so far in the MCU. And then what we got was, yeah. Well I guess technically we still had some high stakes, but it didnt feel like it damnit. This was the worst bait-and-switch in the MCU. Worse than IM3!

Age of Ultron had one good thing in it.

That would Thor going into the cave and having his vision. That was really well-done.

So yes, the only good thing about AoU was Thor going "fuck this" and leaving the movie.

I love many things of Age of Ultron, and there's very little I actually dislike. Really, the only problem I have is that it's too overcrowded with stuff that doesn't fit together that well. I still like it but it's well below the other Avengers films and other *great* MCU films because of that.

I love Ultron - he could have been a lot more sinister if they didn't make him a literal quip machine but I think the result is awesome anyways

Honestly, I think there was really no way to go wrong with James Spader as Ultron

I think they went VERY wrong with James Spader as Ultron, personally. Spader is an intimidating and imposing presence, and they plastered over him with layers of CGI to make him into an expressionless robot, relying entirely on voice acting to carry the character...which even James Spader couldn't do.

Probably an unpopular opinion but Foxsilver is so much worse. His personality is all wrong (QS is and should be a prick) and he's too powerful and has to be written out of every movie after one scene.

i liked foxsilver better just because he didn't have that stupid accent. yeah, i get that it makes sense that he would have a thick accent but reading the comics, that's not how i imagined him sounding at all. plus he didn't have it in the '90s x-men cartoon. so that threw me off.

Eh the median of MCU is probably something like Ant-Man or Doc Strange. Cuz MCU 's standard is higher than average blockbuster standard.

AoU is more like fodder line to me. It's not bad, I enjoyed watching it a lot, but it didn't quite make my long term memory. It sort of just exists.
